As I was searching around the net for deals to day I cam across some Buell Closeouts on Vance and Hines exhausts. There was brand new exhausts for M2's S3's, and S1's priced between $100 and $140.

Leads me to a quick question. Will the V&H, part # 16529, listed for a 99 Cyclone fit on a 2002 Cyclone?
16531 is listed for 99-01 Buells. 16529 for a 99 Cyclone. I'd hate to buy it and find out it won't fit.
I called the V&H tech line. They were not much help, saying the muffler was discontinued and never tested on anything other than the 99 M2.

The only thing I could think of would be that the exhaust header would be a 2 inch instead of a 2.5 inch??? Other then that, I think it would fit. What was wierd is that they have a seperate exhast listed on the Vance and Hines website for the 99-02 Cyclone????

Anyway, the price is certainly good!

the 99 cyclone V&H pipe has a black headpipe to match the black header that came stock on 99 cyclones. So if you get the 99 cyclone pipe it will be partially black which might look weird. Other than that they are all the same as all tuber Buells 99 and up had 2.5 inch pipes.

In case anyone is interested, they have a new V&H aluminum for a 1997 s3. Probably 2" pipe.

How was the durability on the V&H mufflers on the tubers? Any issues on breakage or wearing out quickly?

And noise levels compared to the stock mufflers?

I like the sound levels on my 2000 M2, I'm not interested in "being noticed", especially if I have to pay a price in rider discomfort.

The SS2-R has a reputation for breaking, but I put 20,000 miles on my V&H with no problems. I still have the original front mount, too.

It's considerably louder than stock. Stay away if you don't want to be noticed.

I've got an SS2R on my 97 M2 (currently at 24K miles)... I recently repacked it (affording the opportunity to inspect it inside and out) and found the can in near perfect condition... the only concern is the rear mount is breaking at the weld, but it looks old (slight rust on the exposed surface) and it doesn't seem to be getting worse.

Hi Jack,
I have an SSR2 on my 99X1. It runs great and sounds serious, much louder than stock. It has broken the rear weld a couple times and the front weld is cracked. I am not happy with the durability.

That was someone who modified one to fit on his XB. I've never heard of one pole vaulting anyone when used correctly

I think it was wykedflesh here that pole vaulted on a tuber with an SSR2. The Buell race can is a lot quieter and makes about 95% of the power.

I'm concerned about the structural integrity of using an aftermarket muffler. I guess what spooked me is that the previous owner told me to not to install a "slip on" for that reason. Maybe I'm just being a little paranoid. I do like the sound of the stock '99 M2. Could be a little throatier but is it worth it? TT

If you like the sound of the stock bike and how it runs there is no real reason to change anything.
The argument for aftermarket exhausts are more power, more sound, less weight, in some cases styling.
For durability/reliability you can't beat the stock muffler. If you don't like the looks of it get an X1 chin fairing to cover it up.

Wyked pole vaulted on a modifed exhuast he put on his XB. It wasn't designed for the bike and unfotunately he paid a hard price to test his experiment.

I'm using a V&H on my S3T and really like it. The bike used to have a D&D pipe on it when I got it and that was just too loud.

I have the V&H SSR2 on my '98 S3T, and I'd rather have a quieter exhaust, 'though not completely silent. I see some value in "being heard to be seen", even though most cars have the windows up, and either the heater or A/C on, along with the stereo, cell phone, etc. Maybe I should "leave well enough alone", since I haven't been run-over, yet.

So, is it dead certain that the Buell Race Muffler is quieter than the V&H? I doubt I'll switch over to it, 'cause the previous owner had the V&H system ceramic-coated, and I'd probably have to buy all the mounting hardware, in addition. V&H systems have different mounting brackets, right?

The Buell race muffler is much louder than a V&H. But don't confuse the Buell race muffler with the Buell pro series muffler which is actually a Supertrapp and is quieter out of the box. Of course being a 'trapp you can make it very loud by adding more discs.
