If your low fuel light is staying on you have an error code in the ecm.

Ex. - Mine was on constantly on a 40 mile ride home a few months back. I made a jumper as described in the service manual and retrieved a code 13(?) which was a bad O2 sensor.

Kinger:
Are you riding an Xb? the ecm is not connected to the low fuel light, the check engine lamp
would burn sir..

MMI:
the low fuel light connects to a device attached to the fuel pump at one time 99x1 posted a spec sheet for this device the lamp wattage is critical to correct operation

If the tank is full, and the lamp has not been changed then you likely have a defective sensor, or a wiring problem. The sensor is connected to the light at a connector at the fuel tank outlet, and under the tank going to the tach housing. I would be looking for a wiring problem first.

I never did figure out what was up with mine.
If his wiring harness was chafed through to chassis ground, wouln't that turn on the liget too?
The bulb is on the +12v side and the sensor is in series between the bulb and ground, right?

I have pulled the wiring diagram out you are correct if the Y/R line goes to earth as you indicate, the indicator light would light ( the drawing is not clear on that as it does not show the lamp or sensor.),

There is some contradiction and omissions in the main diagram, versus other drawings in the book.

IF you have the FSM see fig 4-59, pg4-74 in the x1 manual Y/R originate under the tank on the fuel pump pigtail [con 86]they goto instrument [con 39] ( under the tank )there is an error there in that actualy one wire is orange the other is Yellow from the lamp holder, [fig 7-59] pg 7-40 fsm has an error as well as the erlier mentioned drawing it shows the line as Y/R across plug 39 to the lamp holder
from experience I know the lines to the lamp holder are as you indicate yellow / orange, con 39 to lamp holder,

Yes I would be purging the line pressure, removing the tank to check the wiring under it. I agree completely, The fuel level sensor is a varing resistor that is cooled by the fuel, as it is uncovered and gets warmer it becomes less resistive and the light glows brighter until the sensor is completely uncovered. Look in the KV 99x1 posted the specs for it there along with the description of operation, This little setup is someone thinking outside of the box.
MMI If you need a diagram ping me ...

Nate would it make sense if the wires were good then the lamp is wrong or the sensor is bad? that the lamp would light also
does yours light when the pigtail to the fuel pump is unplugged? if so wiring if not likely sensor..

I have recently repaired this exact problem with my xb12s and found the problem at the steering head where the throttle cables and wiring harness are clamped to the frame .There is a raised portion on the frame that just pierced the insulation and turned the light on occassionally.Althought it could have been any other wire.I repaired it by placing some convulted tubing around it and all is cool.I started by disconnecting the wire at the dash unit and the light stayed off,I reconnected and the light came on.I then disconnected the wire at the fuel pump connector and the light came on so I knew that the problem was between the dash and the fuel pump connector.I removed the airbox etc the check for rubbed wiring and was given an insight into the packaging of the frame and motor the wiring was inside plastic trunking and was not going to be the problem and like I said the fault was at the steering head .I also noted that the low fuel lamp is not a bulb as thought but a led that is controlled by the dash circuit board that also controls the distance travelled odo with low fuel sensor being activated.

the tubers have a light bulb rather than an LED.
sounds like a neat improvement.
