I think that I can live with the electric starter. The rubber mounted engine? Great idea!
But my old REBCOR shorty helmet? Now that I cruise in the 70 to 80 range, the wind noise is awful!
I have been in a time warp, stuck in the 70's and I have no idea about modern helmets.

I wouldn't mind a full face [oh geez, I can't believe I said that]
Any suggestions?

I had been looking for a new helmet for the last 1 1/2 years... I wanted a quiet helmet, but it had to be a quality helmet, still have good venting, and not too expensive ... like over $250. I found and bought a Scorpion EXO-700.

Rider mag. did a helmet test where noise was part of the comparison. The Scorpion came in second behind the Shuberth (sp?) which received a 1 in every category, along with a price tag of $750.

Most important part of helmet buying is fitment. If the helmet doesn't fit right, it will not provide optimum performance.

I went to the Scorpion website and followed the helmet measuring procedure, which was very simple... Measure your head with a tape measure. Check it against the chart and that's your helmet size. They were right, that was the size that fit... and I purchased.

Also, ARAI, HJC, AGV, BELL, NOLAN, SHOEI, ICON, SIMPSON, SUOMY, and ? make good helmets..... It's a personal choice.

I have a HJC14. I like it but the breather vents break off too easily.
It was $120 I think.

Silas; more important than brand and price is a good fit. All major brands now make different shell shapes. It used to be that Arai was for "long" heads, Shoei for "round" heads (or vise versa ). Now they both have different models fitting different head shapes.

When you go shopping, it's important you try the helmets out. Wear each helmet 10 - 15 minutes and feel for pressure points ; had a Shoei that made me feel like it was bolted to my head with a bolt front and rear. Obviously not great - nothing to do with the brand, just myself picking the wrong helmet.

After wearing the helmet and checking for pressure as well as general fit, remove the helmet and take a look in a mirror. Pressure points will show as a red mark - for instance on your forehead. If you feel or see pressure points, the helmet is the wrong shape for you - look for something else.

Finding a helmet of the right shape for you can be a tough task but well worth it. What I've done before is wait for the annual motorcycle show, where most major manufacturers have all models and sizes on display for you to try on. Just realize that these helmets have been worn by many different head shapes and are a bit more "broken in" than a new helmet.

Good luck

Henrik

I have the HJC symax. The "flip top" chin bar is real nice they run from about $230 to $270 and like Henrik said the fit is the most important aspect, The Hd dealers here carry it as an hd branded helmet, solid colors only.
The symax may be noisy I have never had a "quiet helmet"
my only complaint has to do with accessory shields letting rain into the helmet Inside the face shield.

Silas,

Please let us know what you end up buying and how you like it. This thread got me to thinking about how much I need a new helmet. I started out with an HJC CL-10 3 years ago. It fits OK, the ventilation is acceptable, it's held up well, but it's just too dang noisy. Let me clarify that by saying I ALWAYS wear foam ear plugs (-33 dB reduction) and I'm careful to fit them correctly. Even with that, after a ~100 mile ride at ~65 MPH average on my S3 yesterday my ears are ringing this morning. I already have substantial hearing loss from noise exposure when I was a kid and I can't afford to lose any more.

Helmet noise levels seem to be extremely subjective or greatly influenced by helmet fit (or maybe both). I notice in the on-line reviews of helmets I can find, ~4 guys will say one helmet is the quietest they ever worn and the 5th guy will say it's the loudest.

The Scorpion EXO-700 seems to be generally rated as quiet and I'm leaning towards trying one. I hope it works out.

My new HJC CL-14 doesn't make near the wind noise my old CL-12 did. It's also significantly lighter. The best part? $108 delivered to my door.

The interior smells like a new Korean car.

Go for a DOT and Snell approved full face helmet that fits your head, and has easy visor changes. I have three, all full face, one is a no name motorcross helmet, a Bell and HJC, the Bell is hard to find visors for and they are SOOOOO hard to snap in place. The HJC has quick remove visors but the mounting gizmo's are really poor, I have had to replace broken ones twice in two years. The HJC also has removable pads which is nice. It also has too much noise too but I feel it fits better than the older Bell. I had a friend that went too fast on his Busa and hit a tree at 80 mph with a $700 helmet. The doctors say it saved his life but they seem to always say that.

Find the helmet that fits best, has the features you like and then froogle it on google and buy on line. Usually after labor day motorcycle accessories are on sale everywhere. Den

I bought the helmet hinges right at the dealer where I bought the helmet. I don't recognize the model number you list but I know the dealer ordered the HJC hinges right there on the HJC internet website. They were about $10 for a left and right set. I still have one left but I don't know if it's a right or left hinge or the model number of my helmet as it's home today. Den

Hugh; 10 year old helmet ... most manufacturers claim a certain "shelf life" of their helmets due to the impact reducing material degrading over time. 10 years is way over anything I've heard mentioned : ) A new helmet seems to be in order.

Just a heads-up (pun intended)

Henrik, it's only 3 years old, not 10. Nonetheless I think 3 years is what they recommend as the replacement interval for a helmet.

I have the Shoei Syncrotech and love it. You can leave your sun glasses on when you put it on or take it off. Very light compared to my other Shoei full face.

Sila -- I tried perscription goggles, and they were fine -- however, taking em off, finding my specs, ya da ya da ya da, got old, for me at aleast, and I went back to normal goggles . . .

these days, most of the time, I wear my Schuberth flip front -- love it to death, though, at 5 years, it's overdue for a replacement -- the built in shades are great, it's doesn't leak rain behind the shield, it's quiet-ish, and, if ya gotta have a piece of protective gear, you can't go far wrong with a Cherman product, yes?

;-}

I recommend any good quality good fitting helmet with the following features...

1. A rear spoiler to eliminate the horrible choking action when in the wind at speed. This is absolutely a must. It is hard to believe the difference that tiny little insignificant spoiler at the bottom rear of a helmet really makes. It eliminates the lift that at higher speeds will otherwise have the helmet trying to choke you to deat.

2. A single piece, coated scratch-resistant quick-detach/re-attach (no tools required) faceshield. Easy to swap back and forth between tinted and clear versions, easy to clean, just plain easy and simple. No parts to lose other than the shield. Quiet too.

3. A removable washable/replaceable lining/padding.

4. A comfortable padding strip for the strap; prevents neck burn, especially after a fresh shave.

5. Good substantial adjustable (open/close) venting for clearing fog from the inside of the faceshield.

Some prefer the latching type clasps; I like the old style D-Ring better. No plastic, nothing to fail outside of the ring, sewing, and straps.

My opinion is that too much emphasis is put on the helmet venting systems. Other than good venting to clear fog from the inside of the faceshield, I've not found any helmets that make much difference on a really hot day. When open, some vents can introduce a LOT of noise too.

I've been a loyal Shoei customer for seven years now.
