Hello All, I am trying to find the gasket part number that runs around the outside diameter of the Stock X1 Airbox. My local dealer can't find it. If you look on page 4-114 on the X1 2001 service manual, its item number 28. Or you can find the Air Cleaner exploded view. Any help would be great, Sick of having the oil drip out of the airbox and blowing onto my leg! -Jason | ||

Jason: My 01 X-1parts manual doesn't show the gasket marked #28. Have to notify the factory about that. The oil drip is from the crankcase breathing system. Either do 1) Replace one or both of the umbrella valves, or 2) Get into the knowledge vault and look up replacing the current system w/an XB breather system and a catch can (Much better way to go, IMHO) See/contact board sponsors like American Sport Bike, and DaveS at Appletons H-D. Not hard to do, and it is a one-time fix. | ||

The oil dripping from the breather WILL NOT stop. Reroute the breather to the street. While my bike was under warantee, I had them try to stop it. They replaced umbrella valves and who knows what else. You will not be able to stop the puking. | ||

What Nate says, they never stop, get a catch can and reroute the suckers or get a can and XB rockers too. Den | ||

While we are on air cleaners, how the heck do I get a good seal so I stop finding debris in my air box. One good thing the oil in there does is trap a lot of dirt. That dam air cleaner just sucks! Den | ||

try a force winder, and a breather re-route or a ham can and associated, the air cleaner sucks for sure | ||

Just wear black leather, then the dripping oil does your britches a good service, although you'll occasionally have to turn around and ride backwards to oil the other leg...  Rob | ||

I got a forcewinder because I was worried about getting rocks in my intake. Boston H-D gutted the airbox and so it was breathing from the rear chamber instead of the front where the filter is. At certain RPMs, the side panel will flap like a wing! That white snorkel tube is required to filter the air. They also left my breather tubes dangling in there and stuck the airtemp sensor in a random spot in there. Buncha monkeys. I'm glad they don't cover Buells anymore! | ||

Does the inside panel flap in the breeze? Mine's gutted too. If I replace my air box the tank will look odd like it's been chopped off. I am ready to find some black duct tape and fix it right.... (Message edited by denfromphilly on September 12, 2005) | ||

My inside panel was mounted to the frame so it didn't flap. I would suggest that you "ungut" your airbox. I agree that the tank looks bad without the swoopy bodywork but I just got fed up with mine. I originally planned on putting in those "tank accents" from american sportbike but they cost way too much for me. Removing the plastic made it feel MUCH more narrow between the knees. | ||

Den: I would save the pennies for Als trim in fiber glass and paint em, Oh and there was a post wayyyyy back some one in europe makes a tank cover for the X1 that ends farther down to cover the cell at the bottom. The stock box has other issues like the rubber wall at the mouth of the snorkel will shrink and leave the gap at some point, several times I checked mine it was out of place.(leaking in dirt)that got by the foam filter base gasket or the perimeter gasket. the gaskets to the TB were torn from the factory, the perimeter gasket is way long and tends to fail The air box keeps the motor quiet and breathes ok, but mine did not keep the dirt out. It was left as stock as possible (no gutting) After a couple of failed filter inspections, and some other issues. I sent a rant letter to the factory and had some heated discussion with them, NO joy, no fix. I fixed it my self (force winder)  no CACA in the motor, I can see the motor, I can hear the motor, I like the motor. I under stand why they could not say take the @#$@#$ thing off and get a ham can if you don't like it. The governmet would have them for breakfast for sure. On the narrowness issue, Like Nate says it does feel narrower with out the trim. I would not put tape in the air box I would remove it and do some thing else. think on this the plastic "blisters" are on E-bay (CHEAP!)from time to time get a couple and hack away. may be an alternative would be to place the IAT in the "snorkel" plug the top hole and stuff a force winder style sock filter over it cut out any interfeering walls other wise keeping the blisters outside intact, | ||
