I had a Shoei RF-800 on when I went crashy-crashy afew years ago. The ol' helmet did it's job, took the impact and left me symmetric.
I am now the owner of a new RF-800

I would really like the quietest helmet, in terms of wind noise, I could find. I love listening to the engine, but the wind rush is annoying. I was amazed by how nice it was riding without a helmet. [MAINE, no helmet law]

I've been using a Vega Summit XPV for the past year. I love it. It's not the quietest, but it's not particularly loud either. Very comfortable, and inexpensive.

Here's a favorable review.

I like to ride without a helmet too, Pa. repealed the helmet law a couple years ago. I don't feel as safe without a helmet and tend to go slow and ride on 35 mph roads. On my Buell the little fly screen propels every bug into my face so there is motivation to wear a full face helmet!

I have a new KBC Force-RR helmet that flows really well. After 200+ miles in the sun, my head was dry and comfortable...very stable, very light; quick detach shield, removable/washable liner, D-rings with snap, very comfortable. I did notice a slight lifting at 120+MPH...air flow=noise, I wear earplugs.

I also have the KBC Force-VR2. Great air flow, stable at all speeds(that rear spoiler/flip thing) with excellent clear peripheral vision and just a little bit quieter than the RR---but I still wear hearing protection so it's a only a minor point.

I also have a Shoei RF-800 that has served me very, very well but is starting to get a bit loose fitting. For the price of a new RF-1000, I have 2 helmets that meet and/or exceed the same safety standards.

...I just can't get used to riding without a full-face helmet, leather jacket, boots and heavy jeans. If it hadn't been so hot outside, I'd have been in my Vanson leather pants. Mesh is intriguing, but I'd rather have the coverage and sweat to cool...

I replaced my fulmer flip face helmet sunday with the hd brand stars and stripes helmet. The ride back to detroit from appleton was a lot quieter. didnt get the whip in the helmet when I turned my head either. Ventilation was pretty good.

I guess I've got to try a full face set up...ear plugs? 120 mph? Geez, I'd scare myself to death at 120! I don't think the thing will do 120...will it?

HD brand helmet? Is that HD as in dealer? They sell helmets along with halter tops? Geez, I really have been in a time warp. Everytime I go to a big dealership now, some smokin' young hottie seems to appear. So I make believe that I'm considering purchasing a WIDESOFTFATBOY [all chromed out, of course] and then I let her show me every bike in the place["...ohh, that's a nice one, but does in come in icefire blue?"] Amazing!!!

When I started with this stuff, we got most of our parts at swaps and custom shops and just went to the dealers when we had to get engine parts that wore out [moving parts]. The parts guys actually knew the part you wanted and HD stood for "hundred dollars"...now it's more like $250.

Just re-read this and I sound more like a geezer everyday!

BIT OF ADVICE"

Buy the best helmet you can afford. There is nothing between your head and the road but the helmet.

Sorry for the safety message, but we just lost a local rider because he used a $50 helmet.

Ride Safe

"Sorry for the safety message, but we just lost a local rider because he used a $50 helmet."

...Sorry to hear that. My condolences. Always a tragedy to lose family and friends.

...I completely understand and concur with the safety message but from my experience and understanding, there are usually multiple trauma's that factor into critical conditions. Elemental physics. I cannot fathom why anyone riding a motorcycle wears anything less than an approved full riding helmet. The cheap-helmet craze doesn't make sense.

One's own mortality is a subject few consider soon enough...

Take it from me, I crashed. Wear a crash jacket, crash pants, heavy shoes, gloves and a full face helmet! I like mesh crash jackets/pants but leather is even better. You may be able to walk away....Den

I whole heartedly agree with Denfromphilly.
All it takes is one time for the rubber side to go to the top, to realize that No matter who says what about wearing riding gear, it is always
better to be able to walk away.

I have been riding for many years, and there is an old riders saying that will always be true.
It isn't a matter of if you go down, but when, and how hard.

Keep the rubber side down boys, God bless.

My crash jacket cost 1/3 the price of the ambulance ride, 1/9th the price of the emergency room, covered all 40 square inches of road rash on my body. The pants were another $100 bucks, would have covered the knee, hip and thigh injuries perfect and my calf wouldn't have gotten a pipe burn. Even the top of my high top sneaker was ground off and I got road rash on my foot. If I had crash pants and jacket I would have walked away with sore joints and could have rode home. The tow trucks (a boom one to pick up and a flat bed to transport) were another $300. I had scabs 10 x 10 on my back and shoulder, more on my elbow, knee, thigh, hip, and foot. All injuries were exactly were the kevlar pads are sewn into the pants and jacket. $200 in crash gear would have saved me at least $800 in cash that night and 6 months rehab on my shoulder. A little rambling but you get the idea! Den

Den is 100% correct. And every day I see dudes riding Harleys in tank tops, shorts and tennies wearing shades and a dew rag. Ever wonder why insurance rates are so high?

Ok, but please somebody, give me names and model numbers...I already figure to go with a helmet [full face].

I'd like to know where to purchase and what...I'm in Durham, NC and it "do get hot".
I prefer short [50 to 100 mile rides] at 70-75 mph. Don't mind twisties but hate intersections so as long as the clothing has vents, I shouldn't be sitting and baking at a lot of stoplights. I never ride to "anywhere", the ride IS the destination.
I am 6'3" and anywhere from 260 to a current 285.

No on the armor, I was wearing a heavy cotton button down shirt, jeans and new balance sneakers with a bell helmet and gloves. No head injuries or hand injuries. The ambulance people said "if you were wearing armor you would not have any injuries". A month later I tried some on at a store and there was a pad and armor everywhere I had an injury. I make my son wear it too although he hates it in the summer.

I wear a fieldshear mach 1, was about $100, Triumph pants from my local dealer, another $100, Olympia gauntlet gloves, HJC 14 helmet, and heavy waffle stomper shoes from K mart.

Mesh is the coolest, not good for pipe burns but strong and the air passes through. Buy at a local dealer this time of year, everything on end of season sale!

Silas; Some of our sponsors probably carry riding gear. You could start there.

Also, many turn to NewEnough for gear. Good gear and decent prices.

thanks Den:
I purchased a Joe Rocket mesh jacket with armor & a rain liner. Rocket boots & mesh & armor gloves, have an hjc helmet. the stuff is from new enough, good prices, good service,it took a bit of time because of my size and I was buying clearence items. The info that you have shared has reinforced that this was a good purchase.

Silas:
As Henrik points out new enough is a good way to purchase gear, I used them We had to swap boots the first pair of rocket boots, were too narrow. A phone call got an exchange I paid the freight. about $10.00 for the return of the first pair they never billed my card for the second set I will be doing business with them again!

Den... OOOWWWW! 10x10 road rash? I can't imagine the pain that involved over the whole time it took that to heal. I had a 2"x1" spot on my knee, and that tiny thing hurt like crazy and was a major PITA before it completely healed.

Silas-I got a nice helmet and full leather jacket from Marietta Motorsports in GA. More of the racer crowd but the people were real nice, shipped it fast and it wasn't as expensive as the rest. I got an FM helmet and a Kobe jacket for under 400. jacket is top notch-super thick leather good zippers, vented adequate enough, the helmet isn't bad but I may go back to a HJC because of the wind noise.

If you wear glasses, the HJC Symax ( or other "modular" helmets with a flip up chinbar ) is really nice.

DOT tested is a must. Snell rating is nice, I won't get into that argument, but they don't test modular lids as of early 2005.

I wear a Symax, ( looking for a quieter helmet though ) & either Joe Rocket Meteor jacket, or Leather. Joe Rocket Ballistic Pants when cool, or jeans when hot. 99.5% of the time. Murphy will nail me on the .5%, & I know it.

I'm a big armor fan. I do martial arts that use armor. SCA "heavy" fighter.

Remember, after it's saved you, replace it. A helmet is a use once item. Then nail it to the garage wall as a trophy, or make a planter out of it.

I'll second that. The flip up chinbar makes dealing with glasses SO much easier. I have the HJC CL-Max. I like it, though my only other helmet was a Harley helmet made by HJC, so I don't really have much to compare it to.
