My S1 is back on the road after a front cylinder head breakage. She needed freshening up anyway so I went with new heads, 10.5:1 pistons and an Andrews N9 cam.

I waited until I had everything ready to roll last night to start her up. She started right up and settled into a lumpy idle. I set the timing 5 degrees retarded and set her a bit rich to be safe. The valve train was initially really loud and the exhaust note is really fierce. The best I can describe it is a mixture of a Ducati 999 with a race can and an unrestricted Evo big twin.

I took it for a maiden ride after putting it through a few heat cycles at about 1:00 AM last night. I'm sure the neighbors loved it. Surprisingly it has a lot more bottom end pull than the stock motor. Rolling just off idle requires a little more care but above that it has some serious thump. After a few miles the top end clatter settled to the usual box of rocks instead of box of bricks. I haven't rode above 3500 rpm and am going to break it in proper like.

It showed no signs of overheating or pinging in some slow moving traffic this morning. I didn't even get the roasted leg syndrome. Only fault so far is some breather pukeage which hopefully stops when (if) the rings fully seat.

Before I only wore ear plugs when I hit the highway...now I wear 'em at all times!

The vibration is also less than before with these forged pistons. It'll still walk at idle but the vibration is much less intense at all speeds.

I can't wait to put more miles on this thing and can shred some rubber.

Yo Congrats Dude, I can relate purportedly having an N9 cam and 10.5:1 compression although I never took it apart to confirm. It's a really exciting combination you will come to love. Sounds intense and idles like an epileptic on amphetamines, will pull your arms from the sockets at 115. At about 2700 RPM it smooths out, the torque triples and it pulls like no tomorrow. Just plain ain't nothin like it I have ever been on. The other Buellers I ride with love the sound and the way the turn signals vibrate wildly at traffic lights. Enjoy! Den

What kind of pistons? Did you run them out of the box or get them balanced?

Tramp, that front iso was replaced, of course.

Den, good to hear it's a good combo. I figured it should be.

I used the new Screaming Eagle pistons. I ran them right out of the box. More vibration or less...really makes no difference to me.

There is an oil consumption problem. I'm sucking loads of it through the intake. I think it may be this breather adapter. It's in a low pressure area and I think may be holding the umbrella valves open at high vacuum. The XB breathers may not work well with it. I'm gonna go back to my old oil bottle catch can with an atmospheric vent and see how it goes.

So far she lets out a chirp from the tire unless I'm really smooth with the throttle and clutch from a stop. It spins the rear tire easily at low throttle openings around corners...and I still haven't ran it past 3500 RPM.

Oddly enough it isn't fouling the plugs despite this...and it runs great and blows no smoke so I don't think it's a ring problem. The inside of the carb is definitely oily when I shut it off. Once I get rid of the oil injection I'll be happy!

rick- thanks for the "of corse", as it should be. that being the case, i seriously doubt your diminished vibration is the result of your forged pistons, but more a direct result of the replaced front isolator.
you definitely should NOT allow your mill to sit in slow traffic after topend R&R... that's afr worse for a fresh topend than taking it above 3500 early on. keep the cool air flowing through them thar' fins, rick-
sound slike a great machine, best of luck with it and don't fret the oil loss, probably more where that came from.
what sort of oil are you using for run-in?

I don't know about HD motors but when my brother broke in his plane motor they told him to fly it with the throttle "to the firewall" for one hour. Land and check the oil, sometimes they will use 4-5 quarts! Then fill up with oil and firewall the throttle for another hour or two. It broke in fine too, the mechanic said not to baby it! High perf motors can be funny during break in!

I know what you mean about corners, I am always careful or the front tire will come up or the rear tire will break loose. The little chirp sounds ohh soo cool! Den

Rick not sure from your post or updated profile but if you are using stock rocker covers there's a clearance issue when running N9 cams.

I'm concerned because you shouldn't be hearing top end clatter at all. Certainly the cam box area will be noisey for a short while but you could be describing the action of the top of the rockers hitting the rocker covers.

There's a webbed type reinforced area of casting on the underside of the rocker covers that needs removing with a grinder or similar so as to prevent contact. If you haven't done this already you need to check it out.

Good luck. I love the way my N9's work too.

GREAT lookin' out, Rocket! (How'd I miss that one?)
Denfromphilly- that point about the tech saying don't 'baby it' should be embraced by Buellers- The Evo Harley mill, esp. the sporty series,
should be "broken in the way ye'r gonna ride 'em".
I am all about a very closed throttle for the first 50 miles, lots of HILL work, then no more than quarter-throttle for the next 100 or so, half for up to 200 miles, with about 5 oil changes in that time. that being said, I am ALL about Beating that puppy after that first 200 miles.
Man- I LOVE breaking engines in....

I'm using the XB covers...they have no such issues.

Breaking in engines sucks.

I'm going with no more (or not much more than) 3000 rpm for the first 50 miles, then changing the oil and then no more than 4000 rpm for the next 450 miles, and changing the oil again. That seems to be what most H-D engine builders recommend.

I'm using the regular H-D 20/50.

If the motor wasn't keeping cool I would've been concerned about the traffic...but this thing runs considerably cooler than my old set-up. Before 10 minutes of slow moving would've had me with my right leg swung as far out as I can to keep from cooking my flesh. Heat is the enemy and I felt I had nothing to fear.

The old isolator wasn't too bad. When I bought the bike with only a few thousand miles it almost bounced the front tire off the ground at idle. That's why I'm pretty sure it wasn't the front isolator.

The oil loss has pretty much stopped. I flipped my Kury...or, er Crappy-achin' breather adapter upside-down and that seemed to have fixed things. Right side up it left it in a low pressure area formed by the Mikuni adapter plate that was apparently sucking a lot of crap out. That or it was just a hell of a coincidence!

That slide rattle does get a bit irritating after a while.
