Our local shop had a suspension set-up seminar yesterday taught by a guy named Dave Moss of Catalyst Reaction Suspension tuning http://www.crstuning.com What a difference it makes to tune your suspension properly. Dave taught about 30 of us to set up our own suspension on all different makes of sportbike, including my Buell X1 and a guy with an XB9s. Then he double checked all our work to make sure we did everything right. In the past I've read all the suspension stuff in the manual and just figured it was too complicated to mess with. However, now that I understand all the adjustments, the difference in how my bike handles is unbelievable. I'd highly recommend making the suspension adjustments if you get a chance.

Sounds like a fun class. What did you change on your bike? I have a 2k X1 that I like to think I have sorted out but it's always nice to hear what others are doing. Mine is set 1 turn from full hard compression and 1.5 turns rebound in front with the forks raised in the clamps a 1/4" and the rear shock is 2.5 turns on compression and 2 rebound. I haven't messed with setting sag at either end yet but it is next on my list with a fork oil change. I get good feedback and control on the kind of roads I ride around here which tend to have frost heaves and a lot of patches and texture.

The class was very interesting. For me it was a lot easier to learn by watching someone actually do the adjustments and then do them myself vs. just reading the manual. My settings actually ended up very close to what you have there. Sag did not need to be adjusted in front as it was already within specs. However, in the rear, I had to basically adjust the shock all the way tight to get it within tolerances. According to the instructor that is very common with rear shocks. He said about 80-90% of bikes come with too weak rear shocks. I'm about 185 so anyone heavier would likely have to upgrade the shock to be within specs of 30-35mm sag in the rear.

i really want to adjust mine. my rear end sags way too much when there is 2 people on my bike. i'd actually perfer it be stiffer when i'm riding it by myself too.

Oh heck! I don't want to buy a shock right now. I do however need a different seat and need to figure out a fix for the damn muffler pipe cracking I keep having to deal with every ttime I turn around. I've always liked my racecars set up a little softer springwise than most which might be why I feel comfy with it the way it is. I'm gonna have to go measure things and then decide.

Opps I'm 205lbs and plan to place on another 10lbs this year.

My previous bike BMW r1100sa came with the $1500.00 ohlins shocks. Talk about butter smooth. I even could take the bike up park roads just by adjusting the setting to full soft, with out any tools.

Does Ohlins make shocks for the Buell?

Ohlins does make shocks for the XB's =) $$$$$$$!
Penske and Works make great stuff for the tubers. $$$!

Dave's very knowledgeable and a nice guy to boot. I may be a little biased, I do have an affiliation with him - he offers his services at our track days, which is great to have around since you instantly notice what has changed or improved.
