okay battery is good and starter engages normally when bike is cold but when bike is hot like after a fuel stop the starter doesn't engage properly into the starter ring on the clutch and skips. have to hit the starter button repeatedly to get it to engage and start the bike. this seems to have started after i gave the bike it's annual washing.

sounds electrical, check all your connections. there is a push-on connector on the cam cover side almost under the starter housing that gave me the same symptoms. i have a 99' M2.

Might want to try running an additional negative cable to your starter housing. I was having a similar problem went through two batteries before I tried the extra cable...no problems since.

I had a similar problem with my starter, I pulled it apart and cleaned the whole thing up making sure the connecting points were really good.
It is very possible the connections are just dirty. I know there is a three step test you can do to check the starter... I know its in the manual they have in the knowledge vault but I don't know if your bike uses the same starter. I have a 97 S1 BTW.
