Help. I need suggestions. I have a 99 X1 and my seat lock just broke inside somewhere. The key goes in and turns, but the latch won't disengage. My guess is the cable is stretched or broken somewhere between the key on the side and the actual latch mechanism at the rear of the seat. The problem I have is that the seat is latched down and I have no way to disengage the latch to get the seat off. Does anyone have any bright ideas as to how to get the trunk area of the tail section open without using the key. I'm starting to think I'm going to have to take the whole tail section apart, but I'm hoping there is an easier/quicker way someone might be able to suggest. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

At this time I am working with an X1 tail for my M2. Anyway, the pin is nothing more then a screw. If you can get to the pin. Lock on to it with some visegrips and turn it out. It may take some work but it will unscrew. Then your seat should come off.

I had that happen when I put on my Banke undertail. What I did was; I cut down the curved end of an allen wrench then I carefully bent up the front corners of the seat. In doing so I was able to gain access to the two allen head screws that hold on the front. Undoing those two bolts I was able to rotate the seat enough to gain access to the lock. Just take your time and don't get to rammy with it. It was a bit easier for me b/c my lock wasn't behind the body work but I would think you would have enough room to get to the actual lock and pull on the cable.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I'm off to the garage to try to take the front allen head screws off. That happens to be the same method I came up with last night as the best plan so far, but I haven't tried it yet. Here goes nothing.

Well, I tried to get a regular allen wrench in there, but there's not enough room, so I guess I'll have to grind one down just list Phatkidwit1eye did. From the limited clearance I have, I can't see what size allen wrench I need to grind down. Do you know what size this is?

Here is one other option. The lock is virtually right in front of the tail light. You may be able to go in THRU the tail light bulb socket. Remove the lens, remove the bulb, and you may have enough clearance.

The tail light housing is pretty cheap. If push comes to shove, that is probably the cheapest thing that you could destroy in order to get access. Get someone here to post a couple shots of where the latch is relative to to the bulb socket, that might help with the visualization.

Heres one other suggestion though I'm not sure you will like it. Cut the stock undertail stuff off to get to the lock. Hell its ugly anyways and now you have an excuse to buy the gorgeous American Sport Bike carbon fiver undertail!!

If you havn't got it off by monday (eariest i can post) I will snap a couple shots tonight of my bike.. to give you an idea of how to get er off.

I had it happen to me too, but w/ my fabbed up undertail i just unbolted it of course if i had one of the full elimiator kits i would be up a creek...

This is going to sound dumb and I am sure it is, but why not just drill a finger sized hole from underneath.

You can then resize the hole to fit whatever type of rubber or stainless plug you can find at the local hardware store.

Well, I tried lot of different suggestions above and ended up finally giving in and using Outrider's suggestion on drilling a hole in the bottom of the plastic trunk thing. What the hell it is ugly anyway and it worked like a charm. I got the thing open and was able to fix the latch mechanism. Apparently if you over tighten the bolts on the latch mechanism it get stuck and I think that is what I did wrong before I accidentally latched the seat down.

Thanks all for all the suggestions. You were a big help with this small, but very annoying problem.

Wow, that's neat. I am really glad it worked out for you.

Especially since I really did think it was a dumb suggestion as it just seemed too logical to me. You know, sort of a "last resort" type thing.

I had the same problem on my 2000 X1. Thanks to this thread I was able to solve it. The seat was locked in and the key was no longer releasing the pin. But my bike had regular bolts (not allen) holding the front seat mount. I removed those and was able to get at all six of the undertail screws to drop it out of the way. I then had full access to the lock mechanism and cable.
