New Buell Carbon Fiber Race Ovals were getting harder and harder to find. It caused me to raise prices and it was taking too long to score them. In addition, the FI Race ovals were long since discontinued, so I was having to convert carb ones to FI ones by drilling the back plate and substituting metric M6 bolts.

Well, no more, we now have new race ovals that are better than the originals. NRHS and A.S.B. teamed up to bring the best tuber air filter to market. Aaron is making the back plates, with integrated venturi rings and spacers, we've got the Carbon Fiber covers. This air filter will flow more than virtually anything out there, and looks great doing it. We clocked the angle a little bit forward to eliminate the interference the Buell OEM filter s had with the X1 CF tank accents, and it looks better with the lines of the bike anyway. And as a bonus, because we've got the costs controlled in house, it is now cheaper to boot, only $274.95.

Here's some pictures:

m2

You can buy them from American Sport Bike here or here (still old picture), or you can buy them from NRHS here, it's all good. Same great product (NRHS's has NRHS engraved in the backplate, A.S.B. has A.S.B. engraved there)
I'll have replacement CF ovals up on the web site soon too.

Al

Cool! Wish I still had my X1 (every day ). Any plans to make CF covers for the S2s? I know Aaron already has the backplates, but I'd like a cover that isn't that greenish color (running a chrome Sporty cover right now).

Does the one piece backing plate fit the Buell "race Kit" c.fiber cover? If so,i've got a new in box Buell kit i'd use with it.When using either of these set-ups on the Mikuni adapter plate, has anyone got any ideas on the way the 3 screws lengths don't really thread too far into the holes as they did with the stock Kiehin? Blue locktite, but still there isn't alot of thread engagement(maybe 1/4" on 2 of them).Does anyone make another style Mikuni adapter that is thicker, thus uses longer screws?Or a venturi ring that threads over the screws?

I love the idea that American Sport Bike AND NRHS can work together and combine heads to make wonderful parts for us Buellers. My hats are off to you gentleman and I look forward to seeing what other great things your wonderful minds can come up with : )

One other question, unlike the stock buell carb that their buell race kit was designed for,the mikuni already has a radiused inlet to act as a venturi ring.So does the venturi ring,on either the buell race kit or the American Sport Bike-Aaron built in venturi on the backing plate work well with a mikuni? It almost seems like airflow through the 2 rings would interfere with each other.

Al,
You and Aaron must have read my mind.
I had intended to send a note to Aaron and inquire about a replacement back plate for the Race Kit.
My M2 back plate is a bit flexy.
Is the back plate a straight swap out and work with the stock CF race cover?
It would be neat if it also could be moved forward a tad for more knee room.

No current plans to tool up the CF cover for the S2's. HOWEVER, if I had pre-sales for 20 of them, I'd do it in glorious high quality American Sport Bike pre-preg CF. God knows that hideous green CF is ugly!

The CF cover is identical to the original CF cover, and the filter element is the same 3" not-really-oval-but-fits-into-an-oval-can filter that the Buell race kit always used. So, yes, you can upgrade your backplate to the new one, and POSSIBLY make more power in the process. I say possibly because, if the current back plate/venturi ring/spacer set up is NOT the thing constraining your flow to begin with (i.e., you're only making 80 RWHP), then the smoothing of the flow at that interface isn't likely to drive power up much. HOWEVER, as you start to flow more, as in Aarons 124HP M2 mule, the Buell Race air cleaner (and most others as well) has been shown to become one of the constraining things. I can assure you it won't hurt power, though!

On the mikuni thing, well, we can't control what happens on the other side of the carb bracket. This air cleaner, like most others, bolts up to the existing carb bracket. It doesn't know what's on the other side. However, without asking him, but knowing Aaron's liking for mikunis, I'd be willing to bet that Aaron's 124HP M2 has a mikuni on it, though I guess it wouldn't surprise me if it was larger than a 42mm carb.

If someone finds their 1/4-20 screws aren't long enough, just let me know, I've got longer ones. We've converted so many inch threaded air cleaner parts to metric M6 over the years that we have a ton of 1/4-20's sitting around in various lengths.

No way to move it forward for more knee clearance, it's already as far forward as it can go.

Two notes:
1)We just got these all tooled up, parts are coming in now. So initially, shipping will take a couple weeks, but production is started
2) I know the FI ones are good to go. I know the carbed ones are good to go on a stock header. I have not been able to fit check the carbed one on a bike with a race header yet, as my S1W is all torn down at the moment. I'm pretty sure it will fit. If someone got one and it doesn't, we'll adjust the clocking angle a little to fixt it and make an exchange. The angle it is at now just looks right with the frame tubes and tank forward "droop", so I hope to be able to keep it at this angle for the carbed bikes as well. But if we have to back the angle CCW a little for header clearance, it's no big deal.

Thanks all,

Al

Sweet! Man, guess I need to start squirreling some money away for that purchase. I'm tired of the "tumor" hanging off the side of my S3!

I kinda like the green. There's something about it that kinda says "this is made good, not necessarily pretty".

Kinda cute, by 1997 Buell had learned that making PRETTY carbon fiber parts was more of an art than they had time for. The carbon fiber rear inner fenders for 1997 got shot with black vinylon and called good.

The benefits of carbon fiber without the hassle of the "mines green" calls.

Almost a perfect world, eh?

Al, if you decide to make them, I'd ante up for one as a spare.

Don't get me wrong, I like the green CF, but it doesn't match the other colors of the bike very well (black sapphire pearl and white). The more common silver-grey color, like the later race kit components, would match better. If my bike was green or gold...

Al,
How much would just CF covers for S2s be, if you made a run of 20? I'll bet we could rustle up 20 S2 owners (or Sportster owners, for that matter!) that would pony up the dough...

Al, good looking stuff.....

I like the original carbone fiber of the S-2..shows originally of the bike, but like your updated carbon fiber too...would match the gas ring and the side clutch cover I have on mine...
Keep us updated on the S-2 cost. There is probably enough S-2 owners out there...plus if you ever go down, you could have the new cover....ahaha.....we still need to have an S-2 gathering somewhere.......REXr

The original "green" carbon has a tendency to fog up due to UV
Almost like the surface oxidizes.
I touched mine up on the buffer, what a difference!
I did the air cleaner and the rear hugger/belt guard.

They don't look like new but the sure look tons better.

I noticed that too, almost like a cloudy paint "bloom". I've noticed it appear after riding in damp weather. A buff with a light cutting compound seems to sort it.

I have a carbon kevlar limited edition 99 X1 with the factory carbon fiber parts that are green. I recently had the same problem of them not looking shiny anymore after I washed the bike. I used a cleaner called S100 that did a great job, but I think it was so strong that it took the wax of the parts. They looked really dull. After I waxed them again, they shined right up and look like new. You may have the same problem. Just a thought.
