I have one, 52k miles on it so far.

The bike is fun, flexible and practical.

Reliable? Well that depends.

99 was the first year for the Fuel Injection system. If it's stock you want to make sure it has the latest update to the ECM. I don't remember what it is.

If it has the race ecm/pipe then you should be ok. You could also go the TFI box route to alter the stock ECM map.

Whatever ECM you are using make sure the bike has or you will put in 10R12 Spark plugs, the stock 6R12's were too hot and led to detonation.

There were some recalls issued for that year Buell, check to see if the issues related to these recalls have already been taken care of. If not, I think you could still take it to a dealer and get them addressed, but I'm not sure about that.

Go to the NHTSA website and do a search for this year/model Buell and maybe print them out and then go look at the bike/ask the owner if they have been done.

Some other things that used to be problems but were addressed by Buell via part/component updates are:

The front Muffler hanger. The latest looks like an upside down Y, if you have the old style, this is something that will require constant attention/prevention. The part # for the updated muffler mount is Part Number S1001.01A1

The rear shock. Buell never actually recalled the stock shock on the 99, but if yours was to leak, you would get an updated, much beefier looking shock, part # K1400.8

The rear Isolators. The newer style isolators are much larger and have a "tab" at the bottom of them which make them easy to identify compared to the old FXR style isolators. The new isolators are much beefier and let you carry more stuff (including a passenger) safely. The part # for these is Z0010.CB

Read THIS and THIS it covers some of these and other issues in greater detail.

Have fun with it if you get it, it's a great bike once you take care of these things. Make sure you also get the service manual and get familiar with it.

Too bad Buell did not continue producing this particular type of practical bike with the new XB platform. Oh well, we are not their target market anymore, that's what Harleys are for.....
