I'm installing the new style detent plate in my 97 S1. I was going to pull out the 4 pins behind the plate and re-install them with loctite. Has anyone pulled the pins and loctited them in? Are the pins available from HD by themselves? I picked up my parts today after waiting for a week and my local pathetic Buell dealer forgot to order my updated crank seal and of course they don't stock them. I'll have to get one on order from a different dealer so I can get my S1 back on the road. Thanks, Hodakaguy

I don't think they are available individually, and I think they are just pressed in. Somebody tack welded them, which ain't a bad idea (to my uneducated mind).

I was thinking of spraying them off with brake clean and then adding a little wicking (green) loctite to them to see it that helps? I have a tig machine but I'm a little leery adding that much heat to it. Whats the story on the crank nut, do you re-use it or replace it every time? Thanks again. Hodakaguy

Re-use,with that much freakin' torque and locktite should never loosen!!

Hodaka,
I did exactly what you suggested; used (in my case, red) LocTite wicking threadlocker, applied it and drove the offending pins back in. No problems yet. I also used the crank nut over again, this time with the red (stick) Loctite; again no problems. Just do it, and be confident! It'll hold up fine.
PS-when you install the new detent plate, I'd suggest slathering it with LubriPlate AA630 (or any white Lithium grease, for that matter.) Also, don't forget to adjust your shifter pawl clearance EXACTLY per the S/M.

Thanks for all the info. I pulled the trans out today to inspect the needle bearings on the 5th gear assy. They looked great so I wiped a little lubriplate on them and doused them with mobil 75-90w. I put the green loctite on the pegs and installed the new detent plate. I set it up with the number 32 bit exactly as it showed in the manual. As soon as I get the new crank seal in I'll install it and get this bike back on the road again. Thanks again for the info. Hodakaguy
