Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this one but when I took the bike out yesterday, I had to make a little pit stop. When I came back out, I noticed that I had a slight oil leak coming from underneath the area just in front of my shifter. I am not sure what that part of the bike is called. It is not a bad leak but it is leaking none the less. Is this another one of Buell paper gasket issues? Do you think that this is a DIY job or does it have to go into the shop? I have a repair manual stashed away right now because I am in between homes. I didn't want to drive it today because I was concerned about causing any mechanical damage.

You input will be much appreciated.

I had a leak in the same spot but it was leaking where the shift shaft exits through the primary cover, the little seal that sits behind the shift linkage was leaking and it was working its way down under the bike and dripping off. Easy seal to fix if thats it. Just wipe your finger on the primary case under the shift shaft and see if any oil is there. Hodakaguy

Doesn't sound like a big deal. Go ahead and ride, but keep an eye on it and check your primary oil level.

Most likely it's either the shift shaft seal as Hodaka mentioned or a primary gasket leaking. It's not a big deal as long as you have the appropriate wrenches. A torque wrench for the assembly is a good idea.

There was a recent thread (within the last week) regarding primary R&R. Basically;

- drain primary, remove shifter arm, loosen primary chain tensioner
- unbolt and remove primary cover, remove all old gasket material and check mating surfaces for nicks and warps
- if you are still running the old primary chain tensioner - replace with new beefier version (the old one *will* fail)
- replace shift shaft seal - during primary install the splines on the shift shaft has been known to damage the seal. A single, thin wrap of tape will protect the seal.
- install primary cover using new style metal gasket - use long bolts or wood dowels for aid in doing so (do a search)
- torque bolts to spec in correct order
- reinstall shifter and adjust.
- since you're there, remove the derby cover and adjust the clutch.
- adjust primary chain tension - keep in mind to measure at the tightest spot.
- report back here with results

keep in mind this list is typed from very shaky and rapidly failing memory, and is given as a very general guideline only. Please make sure to check all R&R instructions, torque specs etc. against a credible source (as opposed to me ; ))

about those bolts on the primary, be careful they are not all the same size remember the order, but more important be careful when you torque them down, note that the figures are in foot inches and not foot pounds big difference 12:1, if you crank them down in foot pounds you will snap them! oh and my memory is semi reliable, i did this a couple years ago, i did snap off a bolt using my foot lbs torque wrench, doh!!

and replace the primary tensioner with the upgraded version while your in there!
