I am new to Buells and i do not really know the difference between the two. What are the main differences between, say, the x1 and an m2? Thanks for your help

Steering geometry, tail section on the framework, carb vs. f.i., different front forks, that's the main things from my perspective. Others will add more.

The X1 has hotter cams that pull harder up top, 101HP on spec sheet.
The M2 pulls harder down low, 91HP on the spec sheet.
X1 is fuel injected, the M2 is carbed.
Other than that the motors are the same.

M2's have conventional forks, X1's have USD variety.

Mike, I thought the steering geometry was the same just a different front end. Guess I'll have to look that one up.. (not that I don't believe you, your usually right on this stuff.)

M2 passenger seat is a reasonable size.

You sit up straighter on an M2

I have a stock M2 engine with a Forcewinder Intake and Wiley Co. slip on exhaust. It produces 78 HP at the rear wheel.

i bought an M2, put hotter cams in it, put the X1 chin fairing on, and some mild rearsets on. not all that expensive, and easy to do. close to the best of both worlds in my point of view, but to each his own.

i had three buells to choose from at the same multibrand used bike store when i bought my bike, it was two X1 and one M2 available, all similarly priced in the same condition and they had about the same miles. i sat on the x1's first cause they looked a little more bug out than the cyclone but after sitting on the x1's then the m2 i new the only choice was the cyclone, it felt like a lazyboy compared to the lightnings. also the m2 had the smallish carbon fiber race kit(intake) set-up all ready compared to the garish stock set-up on the lightnings. so i decided on comfort and the cleaner look of the cyclone.

I believe the M2 and S3 share the same steering geometry, I believe the X1 has a steeper rake giving it a quicker steering like or similar to the S1's. I'm open to correction.

MaDeuece is easily modified to perform and handle darned near as well as an X1 -- me, I like carbs, and the X1 has a checkered service history, but, beyond the normal silliness (rockerbox leaks, sidestand switch that all tubers of that era share), the M2 series is very reliable

it comes down to looks, price and comfort, I think -- ride both, if possilbe, and decide on the basis of that

X1 had a 23 degree steering head angle. The rest of the line had a 24.5-25 degree, if I recall.

Pregnant Guppy...Way too Funny!!!

I have a 2000 X1 with all the recall work, upgrades and a few mods recommended in the X1 Files and I love the look handling and performance of the bike. The bike flicks through and jets out of the twisties perfectly. I really have no complaints.

Times I would like to dump the air scoops and go with a something different like a Force intake, but at $28 bucks a pop, I can drop the bike all day long and not incur any damage to the intake or anything else. Plus, I wouldn't gain any HP or Torque without having the top end reworked.

Never rode an M2, but those that have them love them. Koz is right about the passenger comfort although Buell and Corbin have two-up saddles that are great on the X1. I prefer the stock saddle for riding solo and the Pegasus Two-Up for when "Old What's Her Name" wants to fulfill her need for speed.

Am a bit of a bigot in a way as I prefer the style of the X1 over the M2. But that's my personal preference.

Good luck with your selection. You really can't go wrong.

M2 is VERY flickable and has the torque curve down low. Also, if you do your own work you'll appreciate the carb. It's very comfortable to ride on longer trips (3-4 hrs+) and comfortable for the pax, too. Ride 'em both and see which one floats your boat!

True story...

My wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) and I were out riding on my 1984 Honda 700SC Nighthawk. We pulled up to our destination and just happened to park right next to a Grey and Orange 2002 M2. She commented how much she thought that it was a cool looking bike. I bought one that week... I married her A year later.
