Ok, Here is the good news.

I GOT MY NEW AND IMPROVED SUPERTRAPP!!

I decided to do it up right and get some new rubbers for the front and rear mounts (be sure to check your rear rubbers because mine were worn and the Z bracket was loose). The dealer had the rear rubbers but the front rubbers have been superceded (bad news). I ended up buying the new and improved "Wishbone" muffler mount kit ($93).

The kit includes the Wishbone bracket, a new voltage regulator bracket (mounts sideways), a new rear stock muffler bracket (which I have no need for) and assorted hardware. You might be able to just buy the parts you need, but I think the kit was probably listed in the parts book for the 99. Besides I was in a hurry, the dealership was closing and I haven't ridden in 17 days. GIMME THE PARTS!!!

The new SuperTrapp muffler looks quite beefy. They have improved the aerodynamics by welding a cone from the muffler can down to the pipe. AND they now give you two rear straps for the rear mount. I think they are serious this time (they don't want ANY more call backs) By the way the SuperTrapp instructions strongly recommends the new wishbone bracket.

THE INSTALL:

Probably the hardest thing about the muffler install, was getting ready for the muffler install. That rear bolt on the Z bracket is tough to get to but it is doable. Next came replacing that front bracket, what a %#$(*. The problem came once you pulled that top bolt out and you saw the shock bracket move ever so slightly (make sure you have the rear end of the frame supported). Here is my high tech method:

After a lot of cussing I just pulled the shock off to align the bracket. then played with the shock to get those bolts lined up. At least it was easier to get too. You need three hands. Then I went to route the wires for the now vertical voltage regulator.

Remove the shock again so you can run the wires on the other side of the shock mount, Son of ..... After a few tie wraps that is finished. Then the easy part, mounting the muffler. I don't think that muffler is going anywhere now. I do wish it would have slipped onto the header pipe a little further (it's only on about an inch). I'll see how the test drive goes.

Thanks for the service bulletin.

Nope, no paint removal. The kit didn't come with any instructions. I guess I better make sure that bracket is grounded. Is that supposed to be a back up in case the ground wire fails? I did use some antiseize compound on that big bolt that holds the bracket on, that's a dielectric, right? I did ride today and my battery didn't explode, that must be a good sign.

I didn't unplug the regulator. I was able to maneuver it into position without disconnecting it.

I guess I could check on getting some sort of restitution from Buell. But like Al said, once it's been done, who knows? I'm just happy getting a "free" muffler.

I believe I got that stand through American Sport Bike, (it's been a while, the sticker on the stand says LP RACING - Lockhart Phillips USA) If you're real careful you can operate the rear stand by yourself. I also purchased the PIT BULL "stem" stand for the front (lifts under the steering whatchmacallit). That one you need some help getting it set.
