Hey guys,
I was looking at the new XB9S tail bag and thought "why pay that kind of money" so I made my own, I think it is pretty nice, and bigger than the Buell one. The pack is a Panier from my bicycle.

You guys in the mountains have it made! I got sent to help out at a BBQ festival in Tryon North Carolina over the weekend. The benefit was the lunch break rides in the mountains. Shaved a good bit off the frame and floorboards on this trip. Wish there was room in the trailer for the Buell.

Hey guys I was ina sharing mood. A short story and some Buellish pics follow. If you have nothing else to do take a minute and have a read! :) otherwise the pics are at the bottom.

Hope this doesn't pose a space problem..

Buell Day

As I am drinking my juice headed west on Interstate 70, I look to my right at the merging onramp ahead. As I get closer to it I notice two Harley-Davidson motorcycles coming onto the highway. Instinctively I adjust my speed to allow them plenty of room to get over. I look back and notice a green colored older styled Ford Tempo. It is occupied by four teenagers and they are barely more then a motorcycles length away from the rear end of both of the motorcyclists in front them. This is nothing new but it had certain significance this time, as no more than 15 minutes earlier I had passed a brown colored Chevy pickup truck that had a bumper sticker that read something to the effect of: “Save a life, Look around, Motorcycles are everywhere!” I watch the car tailgate the two motorcycles basically all the way to Topeka.

I arrive at Topeka Harley-Davidson Buell just half past opening. Already there are customers on the floor. I walk in the front door three steps, and to my immediate right is a row of four of the new model Buell Motorcycles. A black XB9S Lightning that was sold. A white XB9R Firebolt that had the Stars and Strips graphics installed. And two more yellow XB9S’ one regular, and one with the low seat installed.

I walk over to the parts counter and wait my turn. I pick up my parts from Matt and BS a little bit about Buell’s. It turns out he rides one as well. David Chall is busy helping customers on the other side of the counter. I wander around and browse the clothing and accessories but naturally make my way over to the new bikes again. The Stars and Strips on the Firebolt look very appealing.

Eventually David becomes available at the parts counter and I make my way over. Even though I have only talked with David four times or so in the last three years he still seems to know exactly who I am. At the very least he makes me feel like he does. I make small talk with him and enquire about the price of another part I had forgotten earlier. I make mention of the fact that I thought I had read some old posts on an internet message board that had mentioned that Topeka HD/Buell had an old RS1200 that was in the museum. He told me that believe it or not Topeka HD/Buell has now not one but two RS1200’s.
The original one is not there but Friday, on a trade, they received the first Buell motorcycle they ever sold back! It was a pearl white 1990 RS1200. He made mention of who purchased it and where they got it back from. In all the excitement though I can’t recall now who had bought it.

I asked him if it would be possible for me to take a look at it and he informed me I could. He tells me that he was pretty busy that morning and couldn’t leave the counter to personally show it to me but if I went downstairs to the service area they could show it to me. Obviously I was pretty excited about it. It will definitely be the oldest Buell I personally have seen. Since this was the first Buell ever sold by Topeka HD/Buell I figured it was probably significant back in those days also.

I take my parts out to the truck and grab my camera on the way back in. I go downstairs and ask the service guys if anyone was available to show me the RS. One of them says sure and leads me out to it.

It was a beautiful motorcycle! Pictures just don’t do the justice they should for these machines. Seeing them in person, noticing the attention to detail that went into it, that is what you really need to do to appreciate them. You can definitely tell where the Buell motorcycles were to head in the coming years. It was super clean and appeared to be well maintained. I got to spend a good 20 minutes just admiring the bike. I took a few photos and before I wore out my welcome I decided to get out of their hair. On my way back in the shop I asked if they were planning on selling it. The service tech told me he wasn’t sure and that I should talk to the General Sales Manager.

I make my way back up stairs and ask the front desk woman if the GSM was available and if I could talk with him. She says he is available and points to a gentleman that is looking out the window. I walk over and introduce myself and ask him about the RS1200. He tells me that it was the first Buell Motorcycle they ever sold. I ask him if it will be for sale and he says he is not sure. He told me that half of him wants to sell it, and the other half wants to keep it in the museum. I ask that if he did sell it how much he would want and he said somewhere around $8000.00. I told him it was a stunning piece of machinery and that I appreciated his time. It was definitely an awesome experience!

I headed back down to see the rest of the museum. When I got downstairs I got lost in all the old motorcycles around me. The old Harley-Davidson military bikes, and the old AMF Harley dirt bikes. There was a lot to see. I had been in there before but every time you get the same feeling. Then I stumbled upon an oddity. I looked at the place card in front of it and recognized a familiar name. It was a Cushman Scooter that was owned by Court Canfield! Hey court have you seen it in a while?? Hope you don’t mind that I snapped a couple of photos of it also. The place card in front reads:

“Cushman Scooter

Cushman's were very popular in the 50's. Court Canfield owns this immaculate scooter. The uniqueness of this one is the double seat that is very rare.”

I got home with my parts and my father arrived not to long after. He was there to supervise my wrenching. He is very good at supervising! I took care of my tune up of sorts without any problems. I did a quick clean up and wiped everything down and went over the bike all seems to look pretty good.

Since he worked so hard my father was talking about grabbing some lunch. I was pretty hungry so it sounded like a plan. I also needed to get back out to the other Harley dealer to return the incorrect spark plugs I had purchased earlier in the week. We went and had lunch and returned the plugs. This other dealer only had two Buell bikes. An XB9R & and XB9S. I returned the plugs and headed for home. When I got in my driveway I noticed a pretty hefty package sticking out of my mail slot. I checked it and it was my BRAG membership package! How fitting to be delivered today! Unfortunately though the package had a rip in it and the patch and pin were missing. I will have to call the BRAG office to see about getting them replaced.

Once I got settled I hopped on my bike to try it out. After a three-hour ride I came to the realization that I must have done pretty well. My S1 Lightning ran a lot smoother, shifted easier and sounded better then it did before I started. Mission accomplished. My Buell day was over. Here are some pictures from my visit to Topeka Harley-Davidson Buell.

>>>In all the excitement though I can’t recall now who had bought it.

That would be Philip B.Wolfe, now riding a Series Oro MV Agusta F4 and owning a host of other bikes.

Phil, Don Chase and I started the Buell Motorcycle Owners Club not long after Phil bought his RS. Several months later, they sold their 2nd Buell, a GORGEOUS Red 1990 RS-1200 to yours truly.

The White RS1200 was IMMACULATELY maintain (bear in mind that Wolfe also drives a Mercedes-Benz SL300 Gullwing in Concours condition and owned the first Porsche 959 and 930 Turbo sold in the USA. He's, dare I say, kinda anal retentive about his toys.

Topeka, to this day, remains one of the outstanding dealerships (even ignoring one of the most spectacular HD facilities in the country) and stocks TONS of Buell parts.

Thanks for the great memory. Remind me to tell you ALL about that Cushman someday...it has a REAL history. There were 9 made with 2 seats.

Fuscat...cool story thanks for the pictures.
Court, there are no legal 959's in the USA.
The first imported into the USA was for display purposes by Otis Chandler, I know. I drove it for 6 mi on its arrival. There are no US legalized road 959's in the USA. Several eurospec 959's have been converted to Porsche club race cars and brought in.

Accurate statement. In fact, just before he snagged the 928 he almost did the unthinkable and go "gray".

The 930 was imported to Texas where Phil bought it.

That garage makes my palms sweat!

Here are some pics from "Thunder in the Valley", an annual event in Johnstown, PA. I think I have the worlds slowest digital so I only got one action shot and it was a car. I only saw three Buells while there and one of them was mine.
One person was excited to see a Buell, he comes running over to ask me if I can smoke the rear tire and I said "OF COURSE" and proceeded to melt my brand new tire. Highlight of my day.

Here are some showbikes that were there...

Here is the Bar we stopped at on the way home aptly named Scooters...

Lots of excitement there, though I only got one good shot, but if you look to the left of the rear wheel you can see two good starts of smoke runs, one ended good one ended bad, the bad one only broke a belt though, the good one was a Rev-tech kit bike who was still smoking the tire out of site up the hill past the Bar.

Here are some of my friends I went with, they are all a little off in the head but they say I am just as bad so we all must be normal, Right?

Does anyone know where I can find results and pictures from the BattleTrax that was just held in Harrisburg, Pa. on june 28-2003. And don't send me a link to the BattleTrax site- they have nothing. I was just wondering if anyone else was there that might have info and especially photos.
Thanx,
Peggy
