This is what caused me to miss the American Sport Bike BBQ and stranded me 81 miles south of Las Vegas.

Blake, looks like stock Harley piston. This kind of damage is typical of a lean conditon causing over heating of the piston, leading to surface instablity and "chunkc" flying off to beat themselves up and down unto you either go though the crown or shit the pieces out the tail pipe. This looks like it has gone on for a while until a bigger piece let loose.

These are the kinds of motor claims were having in our motor program here at Custom Chrome.

Blake,

The pistons are AXT (+.005, 3.5", 20 degree dome)
and Dustycat you are correct a lean condition did cause this damage. We believe that the lean condition was caused by a leaking head, which was evident by carbon build-up on half of the head to a point where you could read "JAMES" backwords on the cylinder. The afternoon before this happened I had pointed out a film between the head and cylinder to the mechanics at Dick's and was told that because the engine was modified and high compression a certain amount was allowable and that they would check the torque on the bolts. In any event the damage was done to the piston but it would have saved me a complete teardown and rebuild. The front piston showed no sign "burning" damage but had two 3/32" scores on the P&C about an inch apart running the entire travel length of the piston. I don't know what or how these got there.

Yes, piston & cylinder. I will try to get some photos; however, the camera I am using will not allow very close up shots.

Nice bike Scot.

Is it safe to just plug the breathers like that? How does the thing vent? You have some other mod you are holding out on us :)

The breather isn't plugged, just the breather hole in the filter is plugged. It is vented through the devonator out a barbed fitting in the back side that you cant see to a hose that travels between the cylinders to the other side of the bike to another barbed fitting exiting the back top of the catch can and finally out the filter. There are more detailed pictures on both the right and left side of the bike that shows this if you click on the devonator or the catch can.

The mods to the bike are very tasty and the web site is also great. What the hell is HTML? Keep up the good work, the bike looks great!

I've had the privilege of having had cyber contact with a good number of folks here. I also had the privilege of meeting some in person. I met Eric a couple years ago, the day I first met Pammy and Smadd (#1). Ran into him again at the Deal's Gap event in '01 too. Eric, thanks for pic! This is what happened to it:

She looked like this about eight months ago when I took the pic.s, now she has the CF applied to the side frame, and the fingertip rear signals. She'll be going back to a new alien light/fairing combo, CF bars, and bar end signals, and I'll add a new modified Force intake with two supports after the holidays(taking a break on the wrenching for now - lol). Sure enjoy riding her - Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Got bored again and went crazy with a grinder and some wrenches, here are some before and after pics, I will be painting the fairing this winter. How's it look? I kinda like it without the chin fairing and covers.

Rockin JD! I'd paint the swingarm Blue to match and cut off the tabs first.

I like my X-1 with the chin faring myself but you might want to try a color matched belly pan. cant wait to see the faring painted.
