A subject I know is near and dear to our hearts.
https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-barbecue- month-may/

People I trust have told me the Homestead BBQ in Brooklyn is the best place in the NYC Metro area. Considering we have TWO Dinosaur BBQ restaurants (one in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn) this is a bold claim, but one that I have to check out. Since I am now gainfully retired I can pretty much do this any time I want and next week the weather looks promising.

Brooklyn is hardly anyone's idea of a "good ride" but I know everyone here has a favorite BBQ joint. Where are you, and what is the best BBQ by you?

the guys at the Suches, GA meets turned me onto Jim's Smokin' Q in Blairsville, GA... Really good stuff, so I'll go with that... and as fate would have it, we'll be there next week!

We have really good vinegar based BBQ here in the area of SC where I grew up. The most famous cook from this area is Rodney Scott who started in his family place in Hemingway, SC and then left to open his own restaurant in Charleston. He since added a restaurant in Atlanta and a couple in Alabama. The Netflix series Chefs Table did an episode on him.

There are quite a few less famous places within 30 miles of me. One of the best is located just 2 miles down the road at Coopers Country Store, a gas station-country store-building supply place that also cooks excellent whole-hog vinegar based BBQ several days a week. Located on US-521, a lot of people pass by when headed to SC beaches, so they do a steady business in the summer.

Velvet Smoke in White Oak (a suburb of Cincinnati) has ribs that are at the top of my list along with the ribs from Jim's Smokin' Que, and they have the best Burnt Ends I've ever tasted. And nobody has better BBQ Baked Beans. I've been favoring their Brisket lately, I've found it extremely tasty.

Those who haven't been to East Troy, Wisconsin lately are sure missing out. LD's BBQ is absolutely awesome!

I actually live in Eastern NC now. While there are some good non-chain vinegar based BBQ restaurants all over the place, Kent's Kountry BBQ in Vanceboro, NC has limited hours but FANTASTIC 'Texas style' BBQ. More ketchup based than vinegar based, but DANG GOOD!

Actually the best darn ribs I can get around Eastern NC are made by my buddy with sauce that I bring back from LD's in East Troy. Interestingly it is both ketchup based AND vinegar based. YUM!!!

I made it to the Hometown BBQ yesterday for lunch, and it was VERY good. That had to be the JUICIEST pulled pork sandwich I've ever had; the tray was a mess of juices when I was done. The collard greens I ordered on the side was also very good.

HOWEVER, I will NEVER do this ride again. I'd have to be in the area for something else before I go there again. The Hometown BBQ is 30 miles from my house. It took me TWO HOURS to get there, and THREE HOURS to get back home.

Every time I visit the five boroughs of New York City I ask myself "Why the HELL would anyone want to live in the five boroughs?" People who complain about the traffic where I live on Long Island need to ride in the city more often to get some perspective!

Going to try a new place today for lunch. Smokey Bones in Ronkonkoma comes highly recommended. I've passed the place dozens of times, but I was always on my way to someplace else. Today, I'll stop.

EDIT: On my original post I mistakenly called it the "Homestead BBQ." It is actually "Hometown BBQ." Sorry for any confusion.

Today I checked out "Smokey Bones," a chain BBQ restaurant with a location out in Ronkonkoma. The pulled pork was good, but not as good as the Hometown BBQ example. The place did irk me, though, as I checked in on Yelp and got a pop up "Special Lunchtime Offer." The waiter informed me it was no longer any good. I argued that if it wasn't, then why did it pop up RIGHT NOW when I checked in. He took at back to the manager who claimed that the home office apparently never canceled the deal and they wouldn't honor it. If they did, I might've considered going back but now? I've got other places to check out.

Smokey Bones is ok. I wouldn't consider them a BBQ place though.

Were you with us when we went to HooDoo Browns in CT?

Over the last few years, I've been honing my skills as a BBQ smoker. My claim to fame is my pulled pork which more than a few people have said it is the best they've had. My ribs are decent and I've only smoked one brisket. Brisket can get expensive mastering how to smoke it well.

These are my "Loaded ShotGun Shells"

Might've been. I remember meeting you guys at a BBQ joint in CT that was NOT the Dinosaur in Stamford so maybe that was the place?

I tried a new place that recently opened today; Bitterman's BBQ in West Babylon. It's a take-out place but they do have a couple of two-seater tables. The menu is not very extensive, but that just means they get to pay extra attention to what they do best which is RIBS. I had an order of babybacks with beans and cole slaw. I wanted to note here that the cole slaw was EXCELLENT. It's too bad they didn't have pulled pork sandwiches on the menu because that slaw would've been PERFECT in one.

Today should've been my 11 year anniversary but as many of you know, my wife passed away unexpectedly in 2021 (nothing to do with COVID19). We were married at West Harlem Piers Park, and then we all headed over to the Dinosaur BBQ for lunch. I went there today to think back on that day. It was a very good day, but there were plenty of tears involved.

Surprisingly, I was able to park right next to the restaurant and I had an outdoor table where I could keep my eye on the bike while I ate.

When we met at the IMS one year, Crusty parked his Norge under the elevated there and left his keys in the ignition. It was still there when we got out.

If you feel like venturing into CT again I would suggest heading to Wallingford and checking out the Pig Rig BBQ. The smoker is going almost constantly and they have some choices of sauce to satisfy various tastes. Some very tasty sides, too.

Harlem!

That's the first Dinosaur I ate at!

I've also enjoyed it at their Brooklyn location.

They had a short-lived location in Chicago. Unfortunately, the day I would've been able to take it in was Memorial Day - a day that they were closed. They closed up shop in Chi-town before I was able to get back.

I miss the Stamford location. Like Troy, they were the only other location I knew of with decent parking available. The absolute WORST is Newark. Somehow when I was in Buffalo for the BMW MOA National Rally back in 2016 I missed out on visiting the location there, opting instead for chicken wings at the Anchor Bar (where they were invented) and Duff's (where they were perfected)...

Hey Jim! Will you be doing any cooking at the WVBR in August?

Those Loaded Shotgun Shells are looking good!

Loaded Shotgun Shells

Manicotti Shells stuff with half 96% lean ground sirloin and half ground hot sausage. Then wrapped in bacon and smoked at 225 for a few hours then cranked up 400 for 30 minutes to crisp the bacon.

They are REALLY good.
