I’m in a terrible predicament! I need to get my hands on XB fuel pump o-rings IMMEDIATELY … any thoughts?

I needed to fix the wires in my fuel pump so I ordered a kit off Amazon with new strainer, regulator and o-rings. The kit showed up so I rip into my Uly and once I finally have the pump out I get to work and only then realize they didn’t include the O-rings…

So of course now I’m desperately trying to figure out how I can get o-rings either delivered by Tuesday or source them locally. I have a trip planned for this coming Thursday where we are headed to Island Park and Yellowstone … on the bike.

Anyone have any luck getting them at auto parts stores or hardware stores or ???

I’ve messaged the seller but they won’t get back to me until Monday, I would like to have a backup plan. And a backup, backup plan. And an emergency if all else fails plan…

You can try to order them on MCcMaster. Sometimes McMaster can deliver same day afternoon if you ordered parts during the morning time. Here are the correct sizes and materials for the o-rings

You will not find those O-rings in auto parts store or hardware store because of those are specific material (Viton) and specific sizes.

Thank you for the link - I had read that thread a few months back and you saved me a convoluted internet search!

Okay so it looks like my best bet is getting a vendor to overnight them to me Monday morning.

Orings can be sourced from a rubber/gasket supply house typically TP is correct Viton is the prefered material for the usage.

Thank you for the tips.

I messaged the vendor on Amazon, they sent me a note this morning apologizing and saying they’ll send me the missing o-rings and pressure regulator today, should arrive “later this week”… Sufficiently ambiguous and non-committal.

I found a website on Saturday, the guy was selling o-ring kits on eBay. I emailed him and asked about over-night shipping; he’s on East coast time so I figured I’d get a response maybe early Monday morning. I was surprised when he emailed be back Sunday morning. He says he would drop them in the mail at 9am today (Monday). He also said he was throwing in pair of pressure filter bushings and male terminal for pump sensor wire - no extra charge.

So he’s my primary plan with the Amazon vendor as backup. If I haven’t seen either by Wednesday morning then my emergency action plan will be calling gasket supply shops looking for the right sized Viton o-rings.

i also repalced my fuel pump days before a road trip ... to utah of all places.

i deburred and smoothed the edges, greased em up and was able to just re-use the original orings.
id think the fuel would make them swell to seal, which is probably why you are supposed to only install new but breakdowns seldom occur at the most convenient time or place.

You’ll have to tell me where you visited in Utah! I love living along the Wasatch mountain range, there are soooo many great riding options - even if I only have an hour or two. If I have a couple days I often find myself in Moab or toward St George - as long as it’s not the middle of summer. In the hot months we stay in the Uintahs or head north to Idaho or adjacent.

So, in proper military fashion, the “E” of my PACE plan was to attempt to reuse the old gaskets. I didn’t have too high hopes, one looked maybe doable and one is pretty loose and looks like it would immediately get pinched.

This morning I still had zero gaskets and so I started calling gasket type companies. I actually did find a company that had some in stock. They are not exactly convenient for me to get to so I resolved to wait and see if others arrived before cutting some time out from work to pick them up.

A couple hours ago my wife texted me to let me know some o-rings had arrived! (I had her text me pictures to verify … I’m not leaving anything to chance!)

In the event someone else needs to do a local search, here is a bit of knowledge I gleaned: the o-rings are a “size” 151. So when calling the companies I would just ask “do you have Viton o-rings in size 151?” And they would immediately know what I was talking about and could tell me in ~15 seconds.

This also can help finding options on the web - a Google search for “Viton 151” brings up A TON of options.

Well hell, I just can’t seem to win on this repair!

I got home from work and the other o-ring kit had also arrived and it had the o-rings for the fuel line in it. While removing the old fuel line o-rings they break, and then this kit has 3 of the same size but the outermost o-ring is supposed to be smaller… so now I’m in a bind!

I’m going to run to whatever parts stores are open to try and resolve this - I doubt I’ll find Viton but hoping a rubber o-ring will last 4 days?

I’m supposed to leave tomorrow night… I’m tempted to use some gasket maker and a washer but it’s not rated for gasoline… I’ll call the gasket companies looking for that small size in the morning, maybe I’ll get lucky…

Anyone have any redneck thoughts about how I could seal this up for the weekend? I just need it to last from Thursday through Sunday…

Ok, crises averted. I ran to Autozone and they had options! They had these two kits:





They are both Viton o-ring packs. I chose the one on the left and found a very close if not exact match:





Here it is installed:





I don’t love that rib … but I connected everything up and threw a gallon of gas in it, charged the fuel pump several times and NO LEAKS. I’ll keep my eye on it …

Sorry, only just saw this - for some reason BadWeb has stopped sending alerts to my email…

Anyway, the trip went GREAT - thanks for asking. The repair held well and my fuel reserve light is working as it should.

On the trip we had a couple of BMW baggers and one RS1200, one Yamaha touring bike and two Harley Pan Americas. So it was an eclectic gathering! The weather held up mostly but we did get rain for a moment on day two which unfortunately turned to hail. It came when we were in the middle of Yellowstone and there was no shelter around so we just drove through it. But then the sun came out and mostly dried us off.

At one point I was gassing up in the town of West Yellowstone and I hear a guy call out “Hey, you don’t see too many Buells out these days - great to see you using it!” He mentioned he owned an XB12SS, I didn’t have time to catch much more than that.

Excellent, glad you had a great trip, and the repair held up! Not much worse than breaking down during a group trip. I've been there, it sucks.

Looks like a fun group, always interesting to have a mix of bikes. How'd the Pan America guys like their bikes?

It's nice when someone points out your Buell and comments on it. I used to get lots of comments when I had my Uly. I'd pile on the gear, including tent, sleeping bag, etc, and get remarks on how they'd never seen a Buell with that much stuff on it lol!

That’s great - it surprises me when people actually know what a Buell is but never heard of the Uly.

The Pan Am owners love their bikes - I mean LOVE them. For me I can’t decide. The look is kind of retro, if an 80’s CB with fairing is what you were going for… they actually really do remind me of my brothers “old” CB700 Nighthawk (1986 I believe). So of course the Uly is far better looking, and sounding thanks to my exhaust, but I did ride one of the Harleys and WOW. I mean it is 16 years newer and those extra 50-ish horses really come out at WOT. If I were in the market for a brand new, big Adv bike I’d take that over the BMW - I would also immediately be looking for some way to give it a nose-job…
