Dick Mann was one of my motorcycle heroes. I had read about him in magazines, but I still remember the first time I saw him racing on dirt. It was at the Colorado Springs Mile in July of 1973. Nobody had anything for him. he was leading the main event by a huge margin when his Triumph's engine let go.

He was not one of those natural talents; he had to work hard at improving his skills and he succeeded at it. He was the first AMA racer to score a Grand Slam. He won races in all five disciplines; Road Race, Mile, Half Mile, Short Track and TT. He was larger than life.

One of the Greats has passed. Godspeed, Dick.

I got to meet him at the vintage races at Daytona in the early '80's and even gave him a ride on my BMW from the Vintage pits at the Horseshoe back to the garages. A nice guy!

I'll wear my Dick Mann t-shirt today.

Read this book if you can find it: https://www.abebooks.com/signed/Motorcycle-Ace-Dic k-Mann-Story-Joe/21340045003/bd

I met him in the 90's through my association with AHRMA (Gary Nixon introduced me to him).
It was always a thrill to meet my MC heroes that I read about in Cycle magazine years earlier...
