Jaimec, the CPAP is part of the weight loss situation, but you're 100% right.

I picked up the CPAP (Phillips Dreamstation) on Monday. I'm sleeping sounder and only wake up once a night, but I feel more tired during the day... I'm hoping it gets better.

It's weird how many things change once you use a CPAP. In my case, it can/should overcome my severe, perhaps lethal sleep apnea. Still struggling with mask fitment/seal. When it works as prescribed, my ears pop due to the pressure, guessing 14 Mb.

Heck, my crap changed. With better respiration, all systems are go. Enjoy the go.

Thumper, If you can swing it, take an hour nap in the afternoon with the Cpap.

I noticed two things IMMEDIATELY after using my CPAP:
1) No more acid reflux in the middle of the night
2) No more late night trips to the bathroom to pee.

Odd how many things that seem so completely unrelated can be connected to obstructive sleep apnea!

Squids, the machine's report is showing no leaks, AHI is 1.4. The pressure is pretty high, I think they said 14.5 cm.

Sadly, no midday naps for me.

I'm type II diabetic and I have noticed that I DO get up to pee less at night. So far, it's been only one time per night.

I'm feeling more rested today, even after taking Benedryl for allergies. I wake up quicker and ready to go, not groggy. I'm wondering if this is what it's like to be a morning person!

Diabetic you say. I have shifted towards keto diet options and a deliberate lowering of carb intake. I also started taking 200 to 400 grams of Chromium Picolinate daily and I down about the same amount of CEYLON cinnamon powder too. I feel normal again.

My pressure is at 16 now. I was still snoring at 14. I keep thinking about bumping it to 18 or 20, just to see what the ocean is like. I do not know why they stop at the pressures that they do. Could be a super secret level where lucidity kicks in and we can control the world through our dreams. I don't really think that, but do wonder what 2 or 4 more on pressure is like and if there is any benefit.

Ourdww, yeah. My A1c was like 15.9 a year ago. I started cutting carbs and working out. I rode 2,000 miles last year and got it down to 8.5. More careful eating has it down to about 6.5

Hells Bells. I remember ketosis. My mg/dl reading was 864. Age 20. Felt like my blood was on fire... well, you know, ketones.

I'm type I.

RD, what you're doing alarms me, but I guess I follow the logic, and I know you know what the heck you're doing.

Yeesh.

More pressure is more pressure. I turned it down to 13.8 and went to sleep. My A1C read 10 or 12 last check-up. I had already started the routine with diet and my sugar levels were good enough my doc just thought the A1C was an anomaly. I knew better and am trying to take better care of myself.

Geez, I've been using a CPAP for over two decades and just now discovered this software:

https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/

Very interesting! Now I can monitor myself to see how it's working.

I won't brag on my A1C but the doc is happier.

I don't recommend full Keto. It's murder in the kidneys and liver. Low Carb works. For most, anyway.

I often joke I pretend to do Keto so I can have steaks.

Big diet changes are hard. It has to become a "lifestyle change", and you need to find what you can tolerate.

I'm not talking dieting to lose weight, then moving on, that's a different matter.

Diabetic control of blood sugar will usually get you weight loss, too, but that's a secondary, if very important, aspect.

Absolutely don't trust Internet Advice blindly. : ) Especially mine. Everyone is different, consult the pros.

I'm using the hospital Carb counting system. A diabetic diet is 5 Units per meal x 3 a day. One Unit ( confusingly called Carbs ) is 15 grams of carbohydrates. A full Keto diet is 5 Units a Day. Dang!

One doc recommended Keto. While the nurse behind him shook her head at me. Every other doctor told me to ignore him, he's a fanatic.

Ymmv. I think I had to go obsession to get the results, and promised myself I wouldn't be an annoying evangelical type nut, just a food freak quietly for a while. I no longer obsess all the time on eating, but it's still an effort to stick to the program.

My sister did the Atkins type Keto and lost a LOT. Did great! Then went off it and gained back even more. That seems to be the typical pattern. She's doing the Weight Watchers phone app thing now with numbers and daily & weekly goals. It was working pretty good up until Christmas feasting time, and since she's one of those "phone grafted to the hand online 24/7" types, moving the process to the second brain works for her.

My system is too old. That must be something introduced with the newer models. Hey, I DID learn something about my unit though... apparently it receives that universal time signal because all of the entries on the SD Card are date/time stamped but I don't see any way of setting the date and time on the unit. Guess that's one of the reasons it's so expensive. Thank God for insurance!

I'm not doing Keto. I have and experienced decent results, but with kids and all, they like their carbs.

I compromised. I eat whatever protein we make and every meal includes veggies. I limit my carbs. I don't like sweets, but love bread and pasta. My success in blood sugar control was more small, incremental changes. Get rid white bread, potatoes, switch to diet soda, etc.

I've been committed to being healthier for about a year. My labs and blood pressure have all been improving, but im around the same weight as when I started. The CPAP has really helped my sleep. I'm up and going early so I get all my stuff done before anyone else is up in the house.

My idea of KETO for me is a reduction in carbs. I limit cokes to about one a week. I drink water, unsweetened tea, and coffee without sugar. I have reduced sugar enough that a strawberry shake the other day tasted sickening sweet. I avoid bread now, but will have an occasional BLT or burger on a bun. Eggs, cheese, and meat is my snack food now.

I'm convinced it doesn't matter which diet you chose, it gets down to changing habits by paying attention.

If you end up eating rational quantities of reasonably healthy food and are happy & stable, you win.

That said, the diabetic low carb ( carb counting ) system seems the safest choice for the diabetic and/or obesity guys. Imho the best shot at preventing adult onset Type 2, but... Biased and amateur guesswork, & my Doc's opinion.

The only hard core Truth in weight control I Know is Universal for modern humans. If you bring the bag to your chair, the potato chips/anything will be gone. Or at least you'll have had too much. Portion control that mindless snack stuff. Fill a small -ish bowl/ container, and feel free to go for seconds.

Philosophical motivation might be that even food you love, if you aren't paying attention while you munch, you aren't really enjoying it. So skip that part. Ymmv

Good news!

I had my A1C done yesterday and I'm down to 6.7! It was 15.9 this time last year!

Doc is patting himself on the back, but I haven't been taking the long acting insulin. I just cut the crap out. I'm struggling with diet sodas right now, but I rarely drink alcohol anymore, never smoked and never got into drugs, so I feel like I get this vice...
