Didn't Erik figure this out over a DECADE ago (and that still doesn't mean I'm happy with it either)?

There is a LOT that Erik figured out a decade (or two) ago.

I love pointing out braided steel brake lines, underslung mufflers...

even just finding a 100hp/ 400lb do everything bike is hard to do! They are either heavy or anemic.

And given a little more time it would have been 180HP/400lb world killer!

Wow, I don't know? I'll do some digging.
"mass-centralization" wasn't even a thing!

He still gets snark for the most obvious perimeter brake disk, but when you run down the whole list of what that man contributed to the world of motorcycle technology, it's striking.

Not kidding, when I go shopping for a middleweight performance bike 20 years newer and it's either "super light!!!!" at 50lbs heavier or a "high torque" 45ft/lbs-80 hp 900cc.

A lot of things have been tried in the past but failed due to material failure, not so much design failure. Idea's are revived as technology and materials improve. WWII was one of the most technological era's with so much experimentation. I have a lot of respect for that generation trying to win a war with technology in a short period of time. As with the Moto Guzzi above, walk around a motorcycle museum and you'll see old idea's that are now commonplace, only improved. With all the new bikes coming out I still don't see anything worthy of replacing my Uly.

What year is that? Is that even a hydraulic fork or just a coil spring carrier?

I hope someday Erik Buell gets credit for all, or at least most, of what he did to change motorcycling, transportation, peoples lives and there world he was presented with.

He was, and remains, nothing short of amazing.

He had some ideas that . . . long before the masses of yeah-sayers gathered round . . . that were pure innate genius and some in cases where he found himself taunted, teased and tormented by minds too small to comprehend.

I always recall going to the Rockefeller Center motorcycle show and seeing the Honda "Xaxis 996cc, the future of sportsbikes from Honda's American designer team".

I was with a good friends who was Vice President of American Honda and he just smiled when I said my first impression of Honda's "concept of the future" was that they had basically consolidated Erik Buell's ideas into a set of "crafted in metal notes" and the greatest impediment to Honda "seeing the future" was to get permission from Erik Buell, in who's mind the ideas had been spawned.

Court, I never noticed how much you look like Lyle Lovett?: )

The more I look at that concept, the more it's very familiar!

I don't think Erik was built to handle that side of the corporate monster, where backstabbing, lying, and outright theft are the norm. Score one for the midwest and an honest upbringing. I'd rather lose honestly, than win by cheating.

Hahahaha . . . we've never been accused of looking alike . . . I used to get mistake and asked for autographs for the guy who played with Eric Estrada on CHIPS.

Lyle was involved in the stuff we did at The Guggenheim along with Lauren Hutton, Jeremy Irons, David Cosby and Peter Fonda. Those were good times. My dinner partner the first night was John Britten's widow . . who was delightful.

We had some very funny stories with Lyle . . the best two were when the folks sponsoring the big shindig after his Central Park concert disinvited me when they learned I worked for Buell. I ended up coming in, direct from the concert, with him and it was so funny falling in one of Manhattan's Le Cirque', jumping out of a limo in cowboy boots and jeans.

The best one was when he walked th bull with his hat and spent the next year in traction. Unwise.

But . . . we were never mistaken. for twins.

Thank goodness.

Awesome sauce, Court! I've been a LL fan for years. Seen him twice here in Knoxvegas, once was after the bull incident with his leg in traction. Had on a contraption that looked to be straight out of the Hellraiser movies! Saved his cousin's life by distracting the bull, IIRC. Lyle still put on a helluva show. Lauren Hutton- seeing her name rang a bell, wasn't she a serious MC enthusiast?

That concept bike was scud-fugly, BTW.

{edit- For the record, there are GOBS of times we of the Badweb have been told by C. Canfield to "remind" him sometime... the thread title reminded me of this. ; )

That was the tour with Bonnie Raitt.

Well. . . . Kinda saved somebody.

He was on the phone speaking to Ultan and said “hold on a minute”.

It’d always working, climbing right in and smacking the bull with his hat.

It didn’t this time.

Lauren Hutton was a motorcycle kinda-thusiast.

Dennis Hopper likely saved her life one day.

She wrote me a long letter while recovering.

Remind me to tell you someday . . . . .
