Been after one for years and finally one turns up imported from the States. It needs a front guard and original tank, seat cover, original paint job, pretty much everything else is stock with nice 20000 mile 35 year patina. Better still, it’s not a lot of money.

Gazumpt! Some other lucky xxxx stole it from under my nose by an hour.

Just thought I’d share on BadWeB as I’m curious to know how common or not XLX61 is in the US. Last of the Iron Heads and my favourite Sportster next to an XR1000 which is oddly enough more or less the same bike without the fancy engine carbs and pipes.

I could cry. I’m kicking myself for not acting faster.

A XLX was the first Harley I owned.
I had a lot of fun with it but long rides weren't fun at all.
I sold it and got a Roadking.
Wish I still had it and I wish I would have left it all Aluminium and Black.

My first Harley was a 1976 bicentennial ironhead.
It had the shifter on the left but still had right side shift hardware with a jackshaft to the left.

First time I ported heads and had 12:1 pistons.
Ran like a scalded dog.

Hope you’re doing well Sean, good to hear from you.

I almost bought one in what...1981 ?
I'd say fairly rare, around here, certainly by now.

What it would have looked like in a few months and how it should look. Most of these haven't survived.

Zack good thanks. Dreaming of a return trip to America when this shit calms down!

My first Harley was a 73 Iron Head. Imported from Texas straight to Yorkshire. I rode it around on US plate for several months I thought it was so cool. Sadly few pics of it exist but here's one somewhere on top of the North Yorkshire Moors.

That's a good link Why didn't I think of that Crusty. Is that the forum who campaigned the XR1000 early 2000's at Bonneville?

I don't know. I've only been a member there for about 5 years. There are a lot of good folks there, and they've been invaluable in helping me with my Gentleman's Express project.

Dang, I bought one of those new in 84.

I'm 6'1" and after 30 mins in the saddle my back was crying. I sold it in 94 with only 3K on it.

Found one I like which is suitably located for export to the UK on smartcycleguide.com

Had no response from the vendor. Says the add is over a month old so maybe it sold. Still, I'd have expect to hear back from three messages sent. Maybe it's not a good site??

Hey Rocket, is that a Triumph Trident in the picture above? I have a T160 from 1975 that's still a project at this time.

Yes and one with an engine built by a little known guru Pete Cook who was so great at extracting power from Triumph and Norton twins and the odd triple his bikes sometimes featured in Classic Bike magazine. His cam designs were so good when Norman Hyde was tasked with the job of making them he consulted with Pete to come up with some wild cams which worked! In excess of 170mph was achieved by the triples using Mk II Amal carbs and full exhaust designed and made by Pete.

I did ride this one, to my wedding also as it happens, but it never quite ran spot on but I did ride a 650 Triumph which rocketed to 120mph with ease it revved like a two stroke.

Sadly for the bikes Pete went back to teaching not being able to sustain a living from his British Racecraft business ventures and that was the end of it. Worse still for me was my mate sold the Trident to another mate in a drunken promise of I'm sick of it being unreliable after spending an absolute fortune on it, and all but gave it away.

It's moments like these when I love the power of the Internet......

From my home town, British Racecraft existed for a short period of time in British bike history but what they achieved was quite amazing.

Was following instructions but, copying and pasting the link doesn't work either.

I'm wondering if it's because it's a PDF file of a magazine article buried within a website?

Let's try it this way....

Yeah 1983... I still have the original dealer handout shown above. I worked a block from Dudley Perkins H-D in San Francisco, and went there weekly to ogle the bikes. The grandson Tom (RIP) worked the floor at the time, he was about my age. I think I actually filled out a credit application for the XLX, but didn't buy it. Same as 1978, I passed the credit app for an XLCR for $4,000, but didn't buy it. It's like they say, you regret things you didn't do more than things you did...

You were pasting links to files on your own computer, not a web address.

I assume by that you mean I was posting links to files which were open in a window on my computer, not stored on my computer, because they are not. My brain was confused I think because they're PDF's, but then I've never been any good at computing skills and never really wanted to be. I'm content to get by with a simple knowledge of how to do the basics.

Back to XLX61's

Has anyone ever bought off smartcycleguide.com

I've messaged a couple of XLX61 sellers and someone selling an XR1000. No one replies despite sending several messages. Makes me wonder if my messages actually make it to the vendor with me being in the UK. Could the site have an algorithm which blocks overseas mail?

I just looked at Cycle Trader and there are three XLX-61s for sale there. Here's the link:

https://www.cycletrader.com/motorcycles-for-sale?k eyword=xlx&zip=45211&radius=any

I don't know if there's any mail blockage with Cycle Trader. I can't comment on smartcycleguide.com as I've never used them.

Thanks for the link. Those three are too far from stock. Ideally I'm looking for stock or close to and Florida location would hit the mark.
