A friend of mine got one for his wife. He and I were on the track team in high school and he's still in great shape but his wife was always lagging behind when they rode their bikes. After he got her the electric she can now keep up with him on hills etc. So I can see a market, I'm just not there...yet!
Yeah, RD I still regret not trying it out, there at Gus’ Homecoming gathering. You looked like you enjoyed it... and you were the only one that rode it.
It looks good. It looks like he's put in a Screaming Eagle 6 speed trans. The 2002 came with a 5 speed. I wonder if he played with the engine. That's what I would want to know. The spring loaded cam chain tensioners were part of the problem with the early twin cams. They make a hydraulic chain tensioner set up that's better. I'm running gear drive cams. That would be my main question.
I don't know if he knows what has been done to it. I'm aware of the cam issue and was one of the things I changed on mine not to long after buying it. The guy that owns it is a close friend and he wants it out of his garage.... and I know what will happen if it ends up in my garage.
Greg, You're spot on with the ebike market. I bought the Flluid 1S for myself to commute to my store, which is 11 miles away, and the last thing I wanted is to smell like an 18 year old boy's dorm room. So I average 24 mph to and from with wind and hills. I then realized that I could enjoy riding with Julie where I haven't in the past, since she struggled to keep up or manage hills very well. Realize, she's only 5', tipping 100 lbs, and has almost 6 years on me. Now that she's on a 1S as well, she did need to buy platform shoes to reach the pedals, we cruise down the highway at 28 mph with me behind and unable to catch and pass her. We're looking forward to next summer, since she got hers this fall, to do a bunch of riding on some camping trips.
The Harleys (Serial 1s) will sell to those that bleed orange and black, but without gearing I don't see them as being very useful for commuting or any serious distances. They'll just spend money on chrome add-ons for something else to polish in their garage.
Mark, I totally understand, coming from somebody that just put over $1000.00 into an 18 year old bike with 111,000 miles on it! As my racing buddy always says about his race car, never keep the receipts! If you add them up you'll hate yourself!
Jeff, if I lived in your neck of the woods I could see having an e-bike. Here in Illinois, the hills aren't too tough!
It cracked me up when he said he had to get the screws back in the same holes! Really?? I had no idea. That gasket used to be just an o-ring which worked fine. I guess getting the o-ring to stay in the groove while you put the cap on was a pain at the factory. A little silicone grease always fixed that though.
Well... this is now sitting in my garage... and it promptly marked its spot! It appears to be leaking from where the clutch cable goes into the tranny.
Its going to take a little work and hunting to get it in shape.... or at least the shape I like. Someone has hacked the electrical up a little when they attempted to put digital gauge's in it. Short list of things I want to change. Fuel petcock needs replaced with stock Floor boards and brake pedal back to stock. (I'm not a fan of the diamond plate look) Slip on exhaust back to stock and chrome heat shields Smaller grips or back to stock. Headlight needs replaced. Its a little fogged up. Looking forward to hitting the Swap meets! I'm pretty sure I'll be hitting Greg up for some helpful hints and tips along the way
What year is that? First thing I'd do is pull the cam cover off and look at the chain tension shoes unless it has been converted to gear drive.
Second thing I might do is track down the correct driver backrest and get that installed.
Third would be to check the rear brake line and make sure that clutch cable isn't rubbing through, mine was just short of getting a hole and spitting fluid when I caught it.
Some of those things may depend on the year. it looks like it may be newer than my 05, maybe an 07 to 09?
After that LED headlight and spot lights, not too expensive if you go with the made in China stuff (and what of these aren't made in China). If not I put a Hella in mine for a short time, the stock headlight was useless. The LED I put in is a lot brighter than the Hella light. Not sure it is worth it, but you could have my Hella light. Not sure what shipping would be compared to just buying one online.
I might also start looking for the King Tourpak and seat, then you would have enough room for a 3/4 helmet in there.
Definitely check your cam chain tensioner shoes. Be on the lookout for a hydraulic conversion cam plate, get rid of the clothespin springs, they’re bad juju.
I looked above and saw it’s a 2002. Those tensioners are the biggest flaw in TC88s IMO.
Congrats Mark! The 2002 was the best year IMHO. You still have a forged crank with double Timken bearings. Solid. As Zach mentioned and I believe you've mentioned it too, the cam chain adjusters are the only real issue on these engines. If you still have the original spring loaded tensioners and your crank runout is .001" or less I highly recommend gear drive cams. Pricey and more effort to set up but do it once and forget it forever! If set up right they're quiet. I don't hear mine at all. Other than that and the few little things you'd like to change I think you have a solid machine. Oh, pull the clutch cable out and unscrew it a little and see if the o-ring is torn. Mine was. You'll probably have to remove the exhaust to remove the clutch actuator cover to replace the o-ring. Feel free to pick what's left of my brain and all the actually knowledgeable folks on here!
I just noticed you said petcock. So it's carbureted? If you need carb parts hit me up first, I have lot's of stuff, including a HS42 Mikuni, although for touring I preferred the stock CV.
Gear drive is on the short list. I also got the stock mufflers to put back on it. It has the stock air filter, so I doubt the carb had new jets installed. Its making a little popping noise on decel and gear changes. I had some LED lights for my Jeep that fit the passing lamps and a friend has a stock set of grips.
....and on my way to work today... the car started acting up.. WOOT. Its in the shop. There goes my H-D $
The main reason I was on the hunt for a 01 or 02 is a WV Buell Rally regular. Mark and his daughter (Doodle) have been coming for the last few years. He has probably forgot more Harley info than I have ever known. In his travels he found that must of the HD's the stunters are using are either a 01 or a 02. The only weak link it the chain drive cams. So if the run out isn't bad I'm thinking a mild cam designed for torque that uses stock springs/heads/pistons and such.
