Well the title of this thread rears it's ugly head again!

In order to put the new belt on I just had to take the two bolts out of the shocks and push the pivot shaft back flush and the belt slipped right in. I put everything back together on the pivot shaft mounts by cleaning and fresh loctite. I then raised the swingarm up to attach it back to the shocks and...

I have been eyeballing some Harley Baggers and have a question for you. My 2000 RoadKing would get a wobble at speed in the corners. That wobble was one the reasons I traded it for the Uly. I'm sure you have had the wobble a time or two and wanted to know what you did to address the issue...

Hey Mark! In 2002 Harley changed the rear wheel axle to a 1" diameter to help with the flexing which I assumed help. However the biggest reason for the flexy flier syndrome is that Harley only has two points of support in it's "uniplaner" design where as Buell uses three. Also the swingarm is held to the frame through rubber bushings that give a smoother ride but do allow a little flex. To fix the main problem I installed a Bagger brace which is no longer made that I know of, however there are other designs out there that do the same thing. Here's a picture of the Bagger brace:

As you can see it's mounted in the under frame support bracket and then ties into the bottom of the oil pan. I have a Baker =1 oil pan and the brace is made for this pan but others are for stock pans. Anyway this is a huge improvement and what Harley should do but if they do people will demand a retrofit as Harley will be admitting fault so that's not going to happen! I think anybody with a Dresser should consider a similar type brace. Even with my obviously worn out bushings in the swingarm I was not having any issues with handling. Although after I fix the swingarm I might feel a difference, it's amazing what you can get used to!

Here is a pic at Dad and Judy's. I was taking a group of riders to Rolling Thunder and we stopped by for lunch.
That is Wyatt... he will be graduating from college shortly. The time sure flies by!
I had a lot of fun with that bike and met a lot of great people while riding it. (and some not so great) Reading this thread has me looking at Electro Glide Standards and day dreaming about some long rides...

I eventually put a mag wheel on the front and a solid Fatboy wheel on the rear.
The spoke wheels just didn't do it for me.
Plus I hated cleaning them!

Well, at least you found it before you got everything reinstalled. I imagine fixing that will give a huge handling improvement.

Nice Police bike Mark! I don't blame you about the wheels. when I bought my Road Glide it had wire wheels. The Road King next to it had cast. I told them I'd buy it if they switched wheels and they did. If you buy anything after 2002 I'd leave it fairly stock, the cranks are barely strong enough for stock engines. By 2007 they went to a different chain on the cams which you can upgrade to on a pre 07.

Hugh, I got the bearings out of the swingarm and they're cypherical bearings and they're shot. Heading to the stealer to get parts in a few minutes. I love riding the Buell to the Harley dealer, although this dealer still has it's Buell sign hanging near the parts counter!

I looked at the Glide Pro stuff and it looks like they're using a polyurethane bushing instead of rubber. I assume it will help with handling but possibly give you more vibration and stiffer ride. Let us know what you think when you ride it some more. I still believe adding the third mount is like using a three legged stool on a dirt floor. No matter how uneven the floor is the stool won't wobble!

I went to the dealer yesterday to get some more parts but they had to order two of the bearings so I went to bearing headquarters but they told me that they were special to Harley and they didn't want to sell me something close. Bearing numbers can be different yet have the same dimensions but they wouldn't take the responsibility if it didn't work. So now I'm waiting for parts. Nobody had the swingarm bearings either. It's a 2 week wait on Harley parts right now. Looks like I'll trailer the Buell to Buelltoberfest. I'll take a trip to Florida in November instead. Hopefully it will be back together by then.

Well at least 2 anyway!! We need to get Bill to take a ride on one. He gave me a sermon one day about how bad the Buell's are. Basically saying, how stupid can you be to build a sport bike and put a damn Sportster engine in it.

Swingarm bearings was the final straw against my local dealer, I won't shop there unless I need something RFN. Those bearings come two to a pack at like $35 a pack, the local sold them for $35 each and I didn't find this out until ordering some other parts. I found some other doubling of prices on other things while doing the Glide Pro install and swingarm rebuild. They can suck my hairy b@ll$ now.

This is also the dealer where I bought my bike and they failed to disclose that it had been wrecked and put back together in poor form. I'll go an hour to the next dealer from now on.

At ronniesmailorder they show part 13 as 2 required and a price of $26.00 a piece. Gold Star HD is the dealership name but surdyke.com is the parts ordering site. They don't supply the microfiche to look up parts though. I use ronniesmailorder.com and https://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/greenmoun troadhd/partsfinder.htm

Since I've been down for parts I've been doing other things. A friend called and asked if I wanted an old Pioneer receiver. It was his girlfriends and she was going to trash it. I told him Sure!
I've been wanting to replace my 1982 AM/FM, mini cassette, B&W 2.5" TV. I watched the Cardinals win the World Series on this thing while at work! The AM/FM still works but every once in a while a speaker would quit and you'd have to smack it and it would work again.
So I dug out some old speakers I had rebuilt at least 20 years ago. Somebody had given me some Yamaha boxes so I built a crossover and put some drivers in it. As I was hoisting them up on top of my garage cabinets I rested them on my chest for a moment and the foam surround on the woofer just fell apart.

Well I fully understand falling apart from age!! I went on line and found some 10" woofers with aluminum cones and butyl rubber surrounds on sale for $40.00 apiece. So my free 70 WPC receiver ended up costing me 80 bucks!

So today my parts from Surdyke showed up so I'll get back on the swingarm in the near future. I'm still waiting on parts from the local dealer for the transmission. By the time the swingarm is all finished I hope the rest of the parts show up.

I listen to talk radio during the week but I also enjoy a station that's out in the country East of here. They have a great play list, not the same 20 songs over and over again. The station is in a farm community and the radio ad says that the station is "out standing in it's field!"

Greg- BTW, you can buy repair kits to fix speakers like that if you ever run into that issue again. I found out right after I’d replaced the woofers in the speakers in my wife’s old stereo system.

Hey Hugh! Yes I knew about the repair kits but the woofers I bought way back then were on the cheaper side and meant for car stereo. They always sounded a bit muddy so I bought some made for an enclosure. The bass is nice and crisp now, much improved!

After I posted the above I went back to the garage and installed the bearings and spacers in the swingarm. The bearings get pressed in up against a shoulder on the inside of the two holes. Here's the install using a socket against the bronze tool:

Once they were installed you have to press in the spacers that are also on the inside. These spacers ride against the transmission:

And yes, nickel anti-seize does get everywhere! So now the swingarm is ready for installation. This will probably happen after I get back from Buelltoberfest.

Your press tool is way more sophisticated than mine was, mine was threaded rod, washers and when needed PVC pipe and couplers. Got the job done.

A lot of the puller parts I used were made while I was replacing the bushings on the rear suspension of my BMW car. I switched all the bushings to polyurethane. I was still working at the time and had access to bearing bronze in many sizes. One of those was made for the neck bearings on the Uly. I didn't have access to more material, even though I have a lathe, so I used a socket to press in the new sypherical bearings. So when you don't have exactly what you need you improvise! Nothing wrong with washers and allthread! It sure beats using a hammer and a punch!!

So I called the Harley shop where I had ordered parts on-line and asked if they had come in. Yes, they're all here. Well that's nice. No call, no email, no nothing! Well guess who gets NO BUSINESS ANYMORE! Anyway I finally have all the parts I need. Now if I can remember how to put it all back together!! Good thing I like puzzles!

Last night I decided to install the main output bearing in the side of the trans case. It slipped out by hand and there were signs on the cases and the retaining ring that the old bearing had slipped. I put a little Green Loctite retaining compound on the bottom of the bore and slipped it in. I did have to lightly tap it with a brass punch near the end mainly to hear it hit the shoulder. It should be solid by now. Pulling it back out next time won't be so easy!! Then there's always the smoke wrench!
