OK, WTF over? I'm looking to get a "spare key"/RFID key fob for our 2017 Nissan Sentra with push to start. The more I search Amazon the more aggravated I get. Local locksmith quoted $135+, or a $45 fee to "attempt" programming a fob I bring to them.

Best option? Beer, BBQ, maybe both to whomever can help.

Fobs are expensive.

Aftermarket fobs may or may not take programming to your vehicle. We have a 50/50 success rate with Chryslers and aftermarket fobs, on a good day.

Don't buy a used one. Most of them, once they're programmed...they're locked.

Sorry man. It's just what it is.

That seems foolproof. : ) Make sure to stand on one foot with a marble in your left ear until it beeps three times during the fifteenth sequence before transferring the marble to your right nostril. If you fail to do this, you’ll need to start the entire day over again.

I have the Scantool to do most of them, but it's probably more cost effective to do it locally than drive to Cleveland...

I had to reprogram the key fob for my son’s Pontiac Vibe (clone to a Toyota Matrix) a couple of years ago. It was just about that crazy. I did it and it worked, but the whole time I was thinking “yea, somewhere somebody is having a big laugh at my expense.”

Sequence:

Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open, all others closed and locked, drivers door is unlocked.

Perform these steps within 5 seconds.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
Close then open the drivers door.
Close then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn). Pull key out.

Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
Close then open the drivers door.
Close then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
Close the drivers door.
Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
Remove the key from the ignition.
Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
Open drivers door.

Sorry to hear that. Things like this are why I hate modern technology. I got a spare key for my 2008 Crown vic a while ago. I think it was 3 bucks.

Thanks brother Matthew! I've initiated those two steps, will follow through in the AM with coffee. (I attempted Amazon for what you showed, fail.) Been a long week.

If I can make it to BTF '20, whiskey's on me. Gotta make sure we use the best sterilizers, no?

I grokked.

I'm the lockout and key guy at work. I also replace mirrors and paint match when somebody get one knocked off in the parking lot.

Most remotes can be replaced cheaply. Even Mercedes and BMW fobs. And the transponder keys can usually be programmed right in the car as long as you possess the original and have a blank chassis.

I figure if I help out lots of people where it's easy, I'll continue to have access to people in my life who can fix starters with super glue...

"pay it forward" being the takeaway.
