My Harley fix'n man has hit a snag....

I am on the hunt for a 99-03 Electra Glide wiring harness.

The previous owner installed Digital Gauges and I am NOT a fan. In order to restore everything back to normal I need the some of the plugs for the gauges and lights that illuminate said gauges.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I looked up the part number and found a harness on EBAY for 84 bucks. Free shipping but if you just need a couple of connectors that's a bit high. I tried to paste the url here but it won't let me. I even typed it out and it didn't help. The part number is: 70985-02

I spoke with him and let him know... told him to buy what he needs and add it to my bill.
I'm just ready to have it back in my garage.

All the gauges have been installed.
The bike only has a little over 11,000 miles on it now

Took if for a test ride and was not to impressed...
The gas gauge was still waving at me... up and down.. up and down.. E to F again and again.
Plus it didn't have the grunt I was expecting with the 30T front sprocket.

Long story shortened a bunch... I missed a text from the guy working on it.
He did not install the 30T pulley because it would require a new belt. I totally missed the text.
When back and read over them again and sure enough... there it was..
SO... the bike is back in his hands. New belt should be in this week.
I ordered the new sending unit for the gas gauge. That should be in this week as well

First world problems... my blood pressure has returned to normal
Looking at the big picture... this is nothing.

After I returned from my Florida trip I took a ride without earplugs to visit a friend. I could hear some loud tapping and it sounded like it was coming from the front cylinder but then again, with a fairing reflecting sounds it's always hard to tell.
I needed to take my car out of storage so I exchanged my Harley for the car. On the way there that loud tapping noise was still there just off of idle. As I was riding down a frontage road I hit a bump and it sounded like I had thrown a rock up against the frame or something. When I got to the next stop sign I noticed my noise was gone! When I got to the storage lot I kept revving it through the rpm that made the noise but nothing. Then I realized that when I hit that bump something must have fallen off!! I looked on the way home in the car but didn't see anything on the road. I haven't looked at it yet, been too busy lately but since it is a Harley, something falling off shouldn't surprise me!!

Fixed is fixed!

I've been spending $$ on a bike that isn't home yet.

Just ordered a new LED Headlight, Seat Cover, Digital speedo adjuster, smoked windshield and that sending unit I already posted about.

I also have the rotors, engine heat shields and Motohorn sitting in the garage.
Can't wait to get it back

My mood goes into the toilet when motorcycle ideas don't go as planned.

I purchased the Andrews 30T front pulley.
According to Andrews website I should only need to move the axle back 0.2519685
That would be one blonde pubic hair past a quarter of a inch.... maybe a black one.
But there is not enough adjustment to be had.

I called Andrews tech help line. They said buy a 138 tooth belt. I asked them who made such a belt.... they had no answer.

Back in the 2000's, Harley had a compensator sprocket with less teeth.
Kinda like putting a xb9 primary drive in a xb12.
I've searched and search but can't find anything like that available these days

My quest for more grunt has hit the rocks along with my attitude.

My question is, is there enough room in the axle slot but not enough cam? Or is the slot too short?

I don't think there is enough movement left in either.
I looked at a couple swing arms on Ebay just so I would know what it looked like.
One of my friends also sent pics of his 03 RoadKing axle set up.

It looks like if you have the cam set to the max the axle would also be pressed against the end of the slot in the swing arm.

I went to visit my friend the engine builder yesterday. I told him about riding your bike and how the gearing really pepped it up. He told me of another engine builder that is building engines but then recommending they drop 2 teeth on the crank. When they get their bike back it's so much better that they claim his engines are the best not realizing it's the gearing that's doing it. I found out that I have a 28 tooth crank sprocket. My only option is a 27 tooth. On my ride back from W.Virginia it bothered me that I had to run 5th gear at 60 mph. In 6th it was at 2300 rpm and if I hit a hill of any kind it was hard on the engine. So I'm thinking that one tooth difference would raise the rpm up just enough to run 6th gear, which is a direct drive on my bike. Might liven it up a little too! Thanks again Mark for letting me check that out.

It's not too bad, looks like $175.00 for the sprocket. A Winter project for sure. I richened up the low throttle/rpm range a little and it helped cruising speeds around 30 mph around town. It had a slight miss before. Much smoother now. It was so cool yesterday morning that I had to wear a jacket when I left for a breakfast run. Best day all Summer for sure.

Well it ended up costing $300.00 with shipping. The $175.00 was the price of substitution when you buy the whole transmission. I just got done installing it but I'm doing other maintenance items too so it won't be on the road for a few more days. Looking forward to seeing what difference one tooth will do.

Well it was 45 degrees today so I rode to brunch. I didn't even notice the gearing change on the way there but I was just putting along. On the way home I took the long way and now at 60 mph I'm at 2450 rpm. That's perfect! I pulled on the throttle and it just pulls strong with no hint of bogging. I then got on it and it pulled rather nicely. So I'm happy with it. I also changed the intake seals and it definitely helped with idle and slow speed cruising. So I'm a happy camper for now.

It's been a little while since I've posted anything since Winter was upon us. Once the snow melted I started riding again but had another issue. Go figure! Under acceleration it felt like the belt was slipping, as in jumping teeth! I tightened the belt and it didn't help. I would take it out occasionally and as it warmed up it would get worse. Since the pulleys and the belt were all new I figured it had to be in the primary. I opened it up and found that the compensator sprocket would move over 3" before the cams would engage! I took it apart and found the spring pack was collapsed. Then I saw wear on all the other parts so I changed everything. Once assembled it all looked good so I figured that was giving me the illusion of the jerking I felt. I put it all back together and took it for a ride. It seemed fixed at first but as the engine/transmission warmed up it started doing it again! Now I took it back apart and looked at the clutch. Well the splines in the clutch were very worn. Without the nut on the shaft the clutch just wobbles! It doesn't look like the splines were jumping but I'm not positive. I've ordered a new inner clutch housing and will try rebuilding the clutch. In the mean time I put the clutch nut back on and in every gear I put a good amount of torque directly on the input shaft of the tranny thinking maybe I had a worn dog on a gear. However I could almost move the rear tire with the force I was using and nothing slipped. So here I am again finding another issue but not 100% sure it's going to cure my original issue. In the mean time the Uly started to miss occasionally while riding at steady speeds. I though it might be old gas but after filling up it's still doing it. The other day I went to start it and it wouldn't turn on until the third attempt of turning the key. So now I've got to take the switch out and clean the contacts on it. I'm hoping that will cure both problems. I can still ride the Uly though, it's not "broke" yet. I think just using the switch is making it better. I hate to have both bikes down, that would just SUCK largely!!

Found it! I installed the new clutch hub on the input shaft and it was a much better fit. So I pulled it back off and when I did I felt a sharp edge on the inner primary cover. I took a close look and could see where something had hit the aluminum housing and cut it leaving a sharp edge! I put the old clutch back on and the nick was lined up with the sprocket but the sprocket was too far away to make this mark...unless the chain jumped a tooth on the sprocket!!! So here's what was happening. I installed the 27 tooth sprocket on the crank. This made more slop in the chain. This caused the automatic chain tensioner to ride much higher. At this point it obviously could not handle the pressure and collapsed under low rpm and high torque. I've ran this tensioner for many years now with no issues but I evidently found it's limits! So with a little research I found that Baker recommends their "Fat Shoe" adjuster which works with the original non adjusting set up. So I'm going to lose my self adjuster and go back to checking chain play. However I was so happy to actually find something that made sense and it wasn't the transmission!! So once I have that $38.00 part in hand I can put it back together. Well I have to rebuild the clutch first but all in all I'll be back riding it soon.
