Well; the poop inspector has his bike packed, and that Damnut is going to be there. I'm 99+% sure that the Adrenaline Junkie will be arriving (Hopefully with coffee fixings)! I wonder who else will show? Has anybody heard from Froggy or Ratbuell or anybody else?

Unfortunately, I'm not able to make it.

I've been wanting to come to this for years, but the timing is always wrong for me.

I would love to come...and actually thought about a midnight run after work Saturday...but it doesn't look like it'll happen this year. Have some fun for me though!

I'm sitting under an awning in a deluge. This is one of the best rallies I've attended in a very long time. Even with the rain, I'm thoroughly enjoying being in this group of great folks.

You folks who didn't come are missing something special.

I took a few photos; I'll write a report after I get back home.

The Spirit of Buell and Badweb is still alive and strong!

An Amazing Revival

I almost didn’t go to the West Virginia Buell Revival.

The week before, my lawn mower took a dump. I had to use the money I’d been saving to go to the rally to buy another mower. Plus, I’ve been feeling my age, lately. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy camping as much as I used to. I kept telling myself that I wasn’t going to go, but there was always that little hesitation in the back of my mind. Still; I did everything to prepare to go.

As the day to leave approached, I found myself getting wound up. I wasn’t exactly excited; it was more like a feeling of strong anticipation. The doubts about how much discomfort I’d feel from the Chineseum seat, if sleeping in my tent would aggravate my sore shoulder and the possible threat of rain all took a back seat to my urge to go. I guess my Inner Tramp took the reins.

This was a shakedown cruise for the 16. I had to figure out new ways of packing. It doesn’t have a sissy bar, luggage rack or hard bags yet. I stopped in a rest area about 35 miles east of Cincinnati and did a bit of rearranging. I also had to tighten the handlebar clamps. I had hit a sharp bump and the bars had turned down. The rest of the ride was uneventful and I rolled into the Cokeley Campground Overflow Area around 2:30.

There were already a fairly large number of people who had arrived, though few were in evidence. I rode over to the tree line where I usually set up and found a spot to pitch my tent. Jerry was set up there and we introduced ourselves. I hadn’t met him, even though we both frequent Badweb. He doesn’t post much, but he reads a lot. We hit it off immediately. He told me that everybody had gone off to get lunch, which was good because it gave me time to get my tent set up before I got caught up socializing.

There were plenty of people to socialize with, too. I think this was the largest WVBR I’ve attended. Lots of familiar faces and lots of catching up to do.

I usually don’t sleep well on my first night of camping, but I slept like a log and woke up feeling fairly alive. Roy had brought coffee and a coffee press and cream, which made the morning even brighter.

One of my defects is that I have one hell of a time remembering names. It has caused me great embarrassment over the years, and it’s about to do the same once again. Two great people brought a gas griddle and fixed breakfast for everyone. For the life of me, I can’t remember their names, but they both are first class people. They did it again on Saturday morning, as well.

Friday was the day for the ride to Smoke On The Water BBQ. I don’t like group rides, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to go. Especially as Janette (who was a Local) said it wasn’t that good. R.D. suggested that I start out with the group, and that I could peel off if I wasn’t enjoying it. That made sense, so I went. I’m glad I did. The pace was brisk, but not so fast that I had to put my full attention on riding. West Virginia roads are a treat to ride and that was when I really began to appreciate the better suspension on the 16. It gives a better ride than the 05 would love bumps and it hugs the road a lot more reassuringly. Part of that is probably due to the Pirelli Scorpions, but the bumps were noticeably more subdued.

Janette was right about the BBQ. I got Burnt Ends, and all I’ll say is that Velvet Smoke has nothing to worry about. VS still has the best Burnt Ends I’ve ever tasted.

How do you describe how much fun it is to just sit around a campfire and shoot the sh*t with friends? It really was a good time, but damned it I can convey just how great it is.

We had plenty of time to socialize, as Saturday was a wash out. It was raining when I woke up and it rained until mid afternoon. Sometimes it rained and sometimes it freakin’ Poured. Somewhere around 3:00, it eased up and finally stopped. Marks family brought us dinner The best pulled Pork I’ve ever had, along with multiple sides, like BBQ beans, Mac&Cheese, Taco Salad, etc. I had to go back for more of the Pulled Pork that Mark’s Brother-in-law makes. It was so good, I was powerless to resist it. That’s the way it usually is at the WVBR. The only sad part about this year’s Revival was that we couldn’t get close to Jack and Judy. They are truly wonderful people. The world can use a lot more like them.

While we used up most of the firewood on Friday night, another truckload arrived on Saturday and we had an amazing round of Firepit Jenga. I was in contention right up to the sudden death overtime, but it finally came down to a draw between Froggy and Roy. Roy got the Title, but it was only because there was no more wood for Froggy to put on the fire.

While I slept like a log on both Thursday and Friday nights, I had a restless sleep on Saturday night. When I woke up on Sunday, I was stiff and sore and only semi-conscious. So I immediately set into breaking down my campsite. Normally, I’ll have a cup of coffee first, but I knew if I did’t just start and not stop, I wouldn’t get things done until afternoon. People were all heading out to go back to their lives, and several just aimed for home. A large group of us went to Dodd’s Log cabin for breakfast, and a bit more socializing. Finally, I was on the road by 11:00 and I made it home by around 3:30. I got caught by a downpour and was thoroughly soaked about 40 miles or so east of Cincinnati, but a lot of the water dried off by the time I got home. I took a nice, long shower and put on clean, dry clothes and I was asleep in the recliner by 7:30. I woke up around 10:00, then went to sleep again. I was exhausted.

Looking at what I’ve written, I can see so many things I’ve left out. But even if they were included, they wouldn’t adequately describe how good the WVBR was. It was the best Rally I’ve attended in many years. The helpfulness and generosity of everybody involved really was the True Spirit of Buell and Badweb at its finest. if you were thinking of attending, but didn’t, you missed a Great One. I almost didn’t go, but that would have been a great tragedy because I probably would never know what I missed.

I almost didn’t go to the West Virginia Buell Revival; I sure am glad I did.

If you're referring to Damnut, as he posted on FB yesterday, he's headed to Barber's. Not sure of his route, or the best route from WV to B-ham...

Just an FYI - YMMV, but he remarked, PLANS CHANGE...

TN411 from Knoxville will roll south, beautifully, all the way to Leeds.

If one is going to the Barber museum Start at the top floor, work your way down.
