True dat! Ever try to get around while stuck in overdrive! With proper clutch usage you can make any machine sound like it's got a CVT transmission! Let's just say I'm really glad that no officers of the law saw me run a whole lot of stop signs!! Today I'll get it on the lift and drain the trans and see if chunks come out or if it's just a broken spring. I tried to pull the lid off the tranny but it won't come off unless you pull the starter. You can't pull the starter unless you open up the primary. Fricken genius engineers!! Love to meet some of these morons in a dark alley!

So to those left standing, have a great time! Wish I was there.

That's why I'm on a Sportster and not a Big Twin. Of course, with the non trap door cases, if I develop a transmission problem, I'm well and truly f***ed.

And the morons at the top wonder why sales are dropping...

Hugh, I'm planning to swing by Saturday AM to say Hi. When do you guys plan on going for a ride? Afternoons are pretty stormy these days...

Cornel- We’ll probably do a short ride early, like over to NC-80 and up to the BRP and back or something similar. Ceecee Clark (he’s active on the BuellXB forum) is planning to ride over from the Knoxville area on an 1190RS and arrive about noon. If the weather holds, we’ll do another ride in the afternoon.

Hope to see you Saturday morning.

Weather not looking to good here today:

1

They update the forecast at least hourly, so it’s useless as a planning tool. At 8 AM, there was 0 chance of rain until 3 PM. It started raining about 9 and the forecast was soon updated to show probability of rain all day.

Hopefully they’ll update it again to something more favorable for riding twisties before too long.

Twig and I got in about 90 miles of riding this afternoon with just a trace of dampness.

Here we are taking a break near the north end of Double Island Road north of Micaville, NC. A local wearing full Vanson leathers riding a funky Honda scooter stopped by to check on us. We traded a few riding tales. I should have gotten his picture, but the scooter looked like this.

Brad, I didn’t realize you bought that PCH.
Sorry I busted your balls about it.
I try really hard not to knock others rides.

It’s gotta be a bit hard to work on but I hope you enjoy riding it.
That’s all that’s important.

Zac, heyull, absolutely NBD, friend! Owning a PC800 comes with learning that many will think it's a weird bike... kinda like owning a Buell. ; )

And yes, it's a fun bike. Very quiet, but it handles very nicely. I ran Deal's Gap regularly on my first one. Honda occasionally goes out in a weird direction,
design-wise- this bike's cousin is the ST1100, same era, also a great bike. Today's agenda is a good long backroads ride to Benton's Hams in Madisonville, then back home with killer hot dogs, bacon, and other goodies. Bike's not carbureting as it should, gonna let it chug some high-test with a tall chaser of Seafoam. Hopefully that'll clear things, feels like the secondary and main jets are plugged. Still very rideable, just no hard acceleration yet.

So, we had 3 Badwebbers and 2 Buell-designed motorcycles on site. Weather is beautiful right now but thunderstorms are promised for later.

Jim Byrd arrived on his S3T last night.

^ Well dang, Vern! You get an honorable mention for attempted attendance.

I hope the repairs are proceeding okay, Greg. Sorry you couldn’t make it.

Ceecee canceled this morning; I imagine he would have had a very wet ride if he’d come.

I’m pretty sure Cornel and Jim got soaked on their ride home even though they were headed in the opposite direction from the rain in the pic above.

Twig was up at Mount Mitchell and hit big rain on his way back. We actually had only light rain for an hour or so at the hotel this afternoon, so it was a pretty good day.

Tomorrow looks to be about the same weather as today, so hopefully we’ll get a good ride or two in the morning.

Weather today is great so far. Twig headed out for home about 10 AM and Jim apparently did about the same time.

I took a ride over to NC-80 this morning but got stuck behind slow traffic most of the way up. I’ll go back on a week day.

This pic is from the tiny town of Penland, NC which is a few miles north of Spruce Pine. Penland Road shown here cuts over from 226 to 19E and is a nice little road. That’s the former Clinchfield Railroad (now CSX); it climbs through the mountains to Erwin, TN. You encounter it often on backroads north of Spruce Pine.

Well, that’s it for BITA 10. I guess we did good to have a meet at all this year considering the current state of the world. It was great to see those of you that made it.

Brankin, myself and a few others stayed at Bear Den in Spruce Pine during the Riding the Ridge Adventure back in the 2000's.There are some nice roads in the area.I've been meaning to go back but health and finances kept getting in the way.

^ Bear Den is about 5 miles away and is a good location to camp if you don’t want to stay in the hotel.

Maybe you can make it next year!

My wife, our dogs, and I are staying up here for another week.

While driving back after hiking to a waterfall off NC-80 today, I spotted a Ulysses along the Parkway. It’s unfortunately getting to be a rare thing to see a Buell in the wild these days.

Well, we’re back home in hot, humid SC after 2 weeks in the mountains. Fortunately it’s a cool, rainy afternoon so maybe that’ll give us a little time to adjust.

My “new” trailer worked out well and it was a lot more enjoyable riding 6 hours in an SUV than in a small pickup. I love riding the EBR in the twisties but I can take about 2 hours of it and I need a 2 hour break. Even in the midst of so many really twisty rods, I think my Uly is a better fit for me. I would have ventured a lot farther out to explore some new routes if I’d had the Uly.

I met another Bueller on Thursday down in Old Fort. We were paying our second visit to Hillman Brewing (highly recommended) when a guy noticed my Buell t-shirt and came over and introduced himself. Apparently he owns a couple of tubers and lives nearby. He sounded very interested in our meet, so maybe we’ll see him there next year.

That’s it for the 10th annual Buells in the Alps meet. Go ahead and mark your calendar for next year: Buells in the Alps ELEVEN will be July 23-25, 2021

Of course, that’s assuming we survive 2020, the next election, and the aliens (which some recent news items seem to confirm the existence of) don’t take over and outlaw motorcycle meets.

Later, y’all.

Sorry I missed youn's this time around...

I've got a year to sort out my "new" PC800. #1 on the list is open up the motor. It has an 800cc V-Twin motor and drivetrain, most likely related to the Shadow VT series. Right now it's riedeable, enjoyable, but dang if it can't get out of its own way. I'd LOVE to make it into a sleeper... we shall see.

Metzeler tires seem to be the way to go. When the wheels and visible running gear are off, I'll see about powdercoating them.

Brad- those are cool bikes. I believe the VT500FT Ascot V-twin, NT650 Hawk, Shadow (in various sizes) and your PC800 all have the same basic engine architecture: water-cooled V-twin, SOHC, 3-valves per cylinder (2 intake, 1 exhaust), 2 spark plugs per cylinder, and split crankpin to improve the balance..

Based on my experience with my Ascot, if it feels gutless, the first thing I’d check is the carburetors. Ethanol gas causes issues, and the diaphragms can tear from age or abuse which will kill the power.

I have a friend that had a PC800 for several years; he may have some inside knowledge that would help.

When I worked at Earl Small's Harley/Buell,our best salesman looked like an accountant, tall, thin ,clean cut and road a Pacific Coast. The rest of the HD riding, leather clad and tatooed riding staff didn't know what the hell to make of him,but boy could he sell motorcycles. That red PC really stood out in the sea of Harley's.Most people just assumed that it was a potential trade in.Every now and then someone would ask him what he road and when he said a PC,he would have to take them out to see it because most people had no clue.

Our best tech was much the same.Ben looked and talked like a hayseed but could diagnose circles around the rest of the shop.He had a Honda something, that didn't run at home and drove a clapped out Chevy Lumina to work. Most of the other tech's treated him like crap, probably because they were jealous of his skill and he didn't look like he fit in with the HD crowd. He is now running the motorcycle program at Chattahoochee Tech,he's the smartest hayseed I know.
