Yeah, it's me. I'm expecting a call from my mechanic anytime now, with a restoration figure for my entire driveline. He'd started the exam on my bike, stopped after an hour to call me and inform me that it's not rideable. Off the cuff, he said it could run $2-3Kish. Knowing Crow (his nom de guerre), he wasn't all too happy with the prospect of tackling this project before he retires at the end of the year. "Winter Restoration" were his words.  If this bears out for the estimate, my best option would be to try and find someone who has a complete, compatible driveline for this bike. Hoping for someone out there who has wadded the front end of a similar machine, for decent money. I'll begin casting my net locally and then far wider if need be. Youn's for out there from TN, holler. Shipping might $uck, but finding correct parts for these old bikes is tricky. I can afford to have the transmission/drivetrain rebuilt, but, dang! Hoping not to have to, if I can find a good and viable donor for what I need. Also- given that this may not be an easy/quickly met goal, I might be looking for a decent/cheep D/S or otherwise fun 2nd bike. I'm NOT gonna miss Suches in October. Holler, friends. | ||

Oh, I guess it'd be smart to mention that it's a 1977 BMW R75/7. I've not researched other models that may share parts with it, but that's likely. | ||

You know that "BMW" means: "Bring Money With", right? Although you may not choose to buy parts from them, Max BMW here in the Northeast spent a lot of time developing a parts fiche for just about any BMW bike ever made. They even built a "new" R bike just via sourcing and assembling the parts. I've bought parts from them and their service was always first class. Find them at www.maxbmw.com Before posting this, I visited their site to check and they do have a replete fiche for your R75/7. From the other R fiches there, you should be able see what other R bikes may have shared the same parts. I'll have to do some digging to find the info, but when I was researching bits for my HP2, I came across a site that would let you enter a BMW part number and it would list all the bike models that used that part. It may take me a while, but I'll look for it. | ||

NO NO you got it all wrong, it means Break My Wallet!!  It has meant many things, some I can't post on here!! Try owning an BMW M3. You take the expensive part of a regular 3 series car and then you get that M out which means Multiply! So you end up paying 3 times as much for a similar part! I'm just glad I don't own one of the new M8's!!  | ||

Squids, when you say drive train are you just talking driveshaft and diff or are you including the transmission also? | ||

Ducsba beat me to it. The Airhead Beemer Club (ABC for short) is probably your best bet for finding parts and knowledge for restoring those old, classic boxers. Allright!! I knew youn's would come through for me. I'll be sure to look into these sources... in the meantime I've yet to speak with Crow, he may already know of someone to go to. It SUCKS not riding this time of year. Weather's been perfect... I may still keep looking for a 2nd bike. If I got a well farkled D/S and used that for my commute, it'd be super kewl. There are some semi decent facebook BMW pages, (BMW Airheads comes to mind) that could be of help. I have owned my R75/7 for 43 years so that particular model designation normally catches my eye. If I see anything of interest will definitely keep you in mind. I also own an XB12X so I spend time here also. | ||

Thanks again, youn's. I've known of Bob's for years. Once I speak with Crow I'll have the diagnosis and cost. I'm thinking of a 2nd bike, either a 400cc or 600cc D/S. Cheap, fun, reliable. etc. | ||

Dangit- Jim's gone silent here for some time, I've failed at several searches here to get his PM. Halp. I've been thinking lately that I really need either (1) a 2nd bike and'or (2) a little "John boat". I've resigned myself to the task of doing what Crow says... a frame off restoration. Honestly, to do right by the R75/7 it deserves it. So... I'm in the market for something... not sure what. I'd love a D/S, but I'm really gonna just watch for something interesting, and cheep. And just reliable. Something to get me comfortably to TWoS or up the BRP for a few days. | ||

Boat or bike. Not both. You will only use one of them. That is why I don't have an 8' aluminum jet-boat! A 4 to 6 hundred D/S would serve you well. Problem with D/Ss is everyone thinks they have a gold mine. |
