On March 26th I had to put down my beloved German Shepherd, Chief. He had liver cancer and he was starting to be in pain. I couldn't allow that. Chief was with me for 10 years and he got me through some very tough times. I leaned on Chief just a little more than I care to admit.

To make things worse, 6 days later my son's Cocker Spaniel Maggie made that final trip to the vet because of vascular cancer.

The house just didn't seem right so we had a trip down to the rescue group that Chief and Remmy (my Shepherd/Coyote mix) and now we have Moose. Moose is an 8 month old Belgian Malinois. He's settling in very well and is becoming pesty as hell. I'm enjoying every moment of it. He's really smart. He has mostly mastered "sit", is learning "down" and has completely mastered "shred the chew toy".

Introducting Moose

At this particular moment Moose is keeping my feet warn.

Moose is working our really well. He fitting in well with the house hold. Watching TV is a new experience. I sit on the couch and he sleeps with his head in my lap.

We've been spending time outside playing fetch and that's a great way to get him some exercise. He's way more energetic than Chief was.

I'm working up some serious love for this dog.

I see you have the "shred pile" conveniently located next to Moose for training purposes!

Paper is free so that's not fun to shred. He prefers toys that I have to spend money on...lol

I've learned that the Kong product line is the only that seems to be able to stand up to him.

I bet he gets all kinds of reception with those twin parabolic antennae...

He's a fine looking animal. Congratulations.

My box Max was a prolific chewer. One time I got him a blue ball that was said to be dog-proof. He must have known that because as soon as I gave it to him he got it between his paws and started working at it. It was a very hard ball covered with some kind of hard blue cover. He worked at it and worked at it until he had eaten the entire cover off (took him a while) and then he stood up, puked up a puddle of blue vomit, and said "my work here is done". LOL.

Ran to PetSmart yesterday and got two new Kong balls for him to play with. They're "almost" indestructible. He has great fun doing the whole fetch thing. We have been doing it a least an hour a day just to get him enough exercise. I haven't been walking him after work because of the heat. Here in the Phoenix area the temps have been in the triple digits and the side walks get so hot it can burn his paws badly. Fortunately my back yard has a large grassy area so he can play there.

He's really bonding well. This morning I woke up with him sleeping across my legs. Moose seems to need a lot of physical touch. That works for me.

My Shepherd/Coyote mix Remmy has pretty much convinced Moose who is running the house. Remmy has always run the house with an iron paw. We've made it a point to give her a lot of attention too. With people, Remmy is as sweet as a stolen kiss. With dogs, she is the alpha female. She gave up 35 pounds to Chief yet completely pushed him around.

Matt, yes those ears don't miss anything. Not a single thing. I'm sure he tracked the space launch yesterday. He's great about not barking though. Even the door bell doesn't set him off.

Moose is my 5th rescue dog. I've never gotten anything but exceptional dogs. If anyone is feeling "puppy fever", find a local rescue group. There are some wonderful dogs out there that need homes. You will never regret it. Moose is proof of that.

...

Both Rocky and D'Ogee are rescues. Two different flavors of awesome. From day 1 Rocky became our "sentinel"- his station is on top of the sofa where he can observe the world through both the front windows and side window. He's 10# of shit in a 5# sack, loves me and M but hates every other human on the planet. Likes to attack you when you're leaving through the fence gate.

D'Ogee came to us through BRAT, Basenji Rescue And Transport. Someone surrendered him over in Clarksville TN, to this day I have no idea why. I was told that an alpha female in the household wouldn't tolerate him... fine by me, he's ours now. Basenjis are a very peculiar breed, beyond the fact they never/rarely bark. My first one loved to root/snort in anyone's armpit, tickled like hell. He never once barked in 17.5 years. D'Ogee will bark once to alert if startled, I think he learned that somewhere along the way- it's not natural to him. He likes to root in my work boots when I come home, and lick/"molest" my pillow when I get up.
Murphy's Wood Oil gets him high.

Gotta have dawgies. Aint living right if you don't, IMHO.

Moose was dumped at a ball field in Chandler AZ and ran loose for a couple of days. He was picked up my Maricopa Animal Control. From there he was transferred to Fedwell Farms animal rescue.

I'm sure I know exactly what happened He would have been 3 months old for Christmas and someone that didn't know what they were buying brought him home. He clearly hasn't been worked with. When he came home he didn't know any command, couldn't walk on a lease and was very "mouthy" with his teeth. When he stopped being a cute little puppy and started to become a Malinois, they dumped him. If they had taken any time with him, they'd have had a great dog. Their lose is my gain.
