Last year... I moved out of the city a couple of years ago and wound up in a semi rural area and one of the recreational things to do is Atv'ing . i've put a few miles on it touring about with some neighbours and also scout for firewood.

I have a 450 Yamaha Kodiak and its fun but not to stable taking corners .

Anyone else have an Atv ?

oh ya, I tried to train my Lab to ride with me ,but he's not keen about it. He gets a bit loopy with any kind of motors, eg chainsaws, mowers and (gasp!) motorcycles etc.

Is the Kodiak four wheel drive?

I don't own a quad, but have given it some thought in the past. I think I'd want a 4WD model rather than one that just goes fast.

Just don’t ride one in Hartford, CT. A couple of days ago the mayor just had about a dozen confiscated ATV’s crushed as a deterrent. Some were pretty nice looking, too. I think that the crushed ones had some history behind them, there were stolen ones that got returned to their owners and probably others still in impound. Still...

I never did like the handling on a Kodiak - too twitchy for me. I REALLY enjoyed the Polaris Sportsman line when I worked for an ATV dealer (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Polaris). If I was ever to get a utility quad, it'd be a Polaris. Hell, some of their bigger (850s and 1000s) "utility" quads are power monsters!

But, I wasn't really a fan of the Kodiak geometry - like I said, it always felt nervous to me. The Polaris, though, I could hammer the throttle and drift around any turn I wanted - and their EPS gave the best rider feedback out there.

I dont know about twitchy, maybe. Its not to stable around corners i think due to its narrow wheel base and height. It tracks alot better in 4wd though.

I didnt hear good things about the polaris reliability and parts availability.

Its to bad they didnt auction the stolen ones off Griff .

Our federalies' often have auctions of recovered and unclaimed assets.

When my wife and I moved rural way back when, we bought 2 Can-Am's.
We had our fun with them but only kept them for a couple of years.
I learned how to ride on dirt bikes and never felt that comfortable on the quad.

The new side by sides would be more to my liking but for the $$,$$$.$$ they cost... I'll stick with my Jeep.

I'd heard all the rumors about Polaris as well.

We sold more Polaris than any other brand, hands down.

Our repair shop was full of Hondas and Yamahas, with an occasional Polaris. They're no worse than any other brand - and no worse than the abuse that an owner throws at them.

I think ATV's are great utilitarian vehicles. My good friend lives in the sticks and has a Polaris. He pushes snow, pulls logs and runs the trash to the neighborhood dumpster. But when it comes to having fun in the dirt I also prefer two wheels. I've seen ATV crashes and when those things come crashing down on you it's going to HURT! That dirt bike gets thrown away if it can't be saved. Knowing when to give up and throw it is something you have to learn, hopefully sooner than later!
