I just posted on the Mexican beer thread that I'm out of work for at least 2 weeks. I'm gonna watch the weather for next weekend, might make a down and back run to stock up on apocalypse prepper BBQ fixins. Marcia might get all Dominican on me, so I have to work my bets very closely. Can't risk riding in rain, nor inhaling too much smoke from a great fire at TWoS, nor her wrath.

A day ride down 129 for lunch might be just what the doctor said. Vern's gonna turn into a zombie unless he eats flesh, I might have the same affliction.

FWIW, given the circumstances, we/someone on the day of a sojourn such as this should take a census as to how many will likely show, and whether Jim's will be open, and if we/someone should call ahead the order.

Recon.

I sincerely hope to see them! Closed signs and rain pictures would suck!! You guys have a great time. Illinois as of 5:00 is shut down to traffic unless you're going to the store or work. Now how do you police that? Yes sir, I'm riding my motorcycle in search of toilet paper. I've been riding all day and still haven't found any!

That's a bit... luxurious... for my tastes...

I have my own method that employs a paper-centric strategy. Often combined with a shower, since.. well... it's right there.

In any case, the stores around here all seem to have paper in abundance again.

They also had a notice on the door that says if your over 60 you can come at 6:00 in the morning and shop for one hour before they let them damn kids in the door!! I just thought, you mean I got to get up before the sun? REALLY!?

Not sure, but I think there's a function on Amazon that sets up an automatic purchase once an item is back in stock. Honestly, although it aint the 'Murican way, I really "enjoy the go" with a bidet. (I HAAAAATE the Charmin Bears commercials BTW. Worse than the Snuggles bear, worse than the Quizno's baby.)

Keep us posted on how everything comes out, Greg.

"Got bike parking and plenty of TP" Sounds like Two Wheels of Suches!

There was a huge crowd there today, more people than I've seen in a long time.I guess people are tired of being stuck at home.

Buellish, good to meet you today. Enjoyed the convo, was just practicing social distancing as much as I could, as introvert, I have plenty of practice. I explored several side roads rather than doing normal 60/180/129 route. All though sketchy for one section, Double gap road was pretty good. Got behind an apparent local that kept a good pace over the rough patch and I followed him down a couple of other side roads only to see him turn off to a residence. Felt like a stalker. Managed to make it back to 60 wondering various road. Kept a good pace back to Suches gas station for an ice cream. Headed home on back roads passing by Amicalola park. Ended up day with dropping bike at the gas station down from home. 300+ miles of social distancing well worth it. Will probably see y'all next weekend.

I just got a call from Skip at TWOS and they are not offering meals this weekend. They will play it by ear in the future. If you have a room or cabin booked or want to camp, those are still available, you will just have to provide your own meals. As of this past weekend Jim's was still open and still allowing dining inside as well as carry out.I do not participate in Facebook. One of you that does might get more up to date information on Jim's status through the week and post it here.It looks like I will be working in Murphy,NC Thursday and possibly Friday so will be hard pressed to get up to date info on Jim's myself.I do plan on riding with who ever shows up Saturday and Sunday and also Friday if I finish my work early.

Frank, if you'll go to Jim's when you arrive and load up with an extra rack for dinner, I'll bring the whiskey and we'll have us a good old time by the fire on Friday night.

It will be after dark when I get up there...

Please avoid the hikers at the gas station.

From the Appalachian trail conservatory.
In these unprecedented times, I am making an unprecedented request: please stay away from the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Whether your hike is for a couple of hours or a couple of days, staying away from the Trail minimizes the spread or contraction of COVID-19.

In a time when social distancing is necessary to minimize the spread and contraction of a dangerous virus, many have escaped to nature seeking isolation and unpopulated spaces. On the A.T., however, what they’ve found are trailhead parking lots exceeding their maximum capacities, shelters full of overnight hikers, day hikers using picnic tables and privies, and group trips continuing as planned. Popular spots along the Trail like Blood Mountain in Georgia, the McAfee Knob area in Virginia, and Annapolis Rocks in Maryland have seen day use reach record-breaking levels. Cars line the highways leading to popular day-hiking spots on the Trail. Hiking the A.T. has become, in other words, the opposite of social distancing.

These same crowds accessing the A.T. may not know how a simple half-day hike can spread COVID-19. While hiking, they may have eaten lunch at a picnic table, taken a break in a shelter, used a privy, or shared a map or food with someone unknowingly infected with COVID-19 and carried this highly contagious virus back to their communities at the end of the day. They may not have realized that ATC staff and Trail volunteers have been recalled from the A.T. and cannot maintain the footpath, trailheads, shelters and privies that may be heavily (or permanently) impacted by increased visitor use. And, they may not be aware of the rural communities adjacent to the Trail that may not have the healthcare resources to help a sick hiker or volunteer or manage a COVID-19 outbreak should a hiker transport the virus in from the Trail.

Many day hikers see the outdoors as an escape from the stresses of these difficult times. But with crowding from day hikers reaching unmanageable levels and the lack of any staff or volunteers to manage this traffic, it is necessary that all hikers avoid accessing the Trail. The A.T. is not a separate reality from the communities in which hikers live – so, until the risk of spreading COVID-19 has reduced significantly, hiking on a heavily-trafficked trail like the A.T. potentially increases rather than reduces harm.

The ATC does not want to do too little, too late. We cannot close the Trail. We cannot physically bar access to trailheads or connecting trails. We can and do, however, urge everyone to please stay away from the Appalachian Trail until further notice.

Allow me to reiterate- fellas, BE SURE to call Jim's to confirm they are open and have product. I remember at one time they'd hold back some 'cue for you if you called ahead... no telling what's going on now.

As important as it is for us all to consume their magnificent 'cue, it'd break my heart to hear you guys couldn't get any.

M just got her "OK to travel to/from work" letter today, heard a rumor that Johnson City TN was about to circle the wagons. I've been thinking about a day ride down there to Jim's just to DO it, but I'd better not.

Whatever happens, BE SAFE, my dear brothers.
