Most ADV bikes will never even see a well graded and maintained dirt road, let alone any real "off the grid" conditions. Just as most SUVs never need their 4 wheel drive capabilities. Yet it's a style that is popular at present. I like the fact that it has crash bars and hard bags, so that you can stop at the supermarket and bring home a quiche for dinner. The crash bars protect the bike if it should fall over in the office parking lot. My ex had something get kicked up and it smashed her headlight on a trip to Colorado, so the protective screen is also a good idea. How far "off the grid" can you travel on a bike that only has a range of a hundred miles or so, anyhow? | ||

How far "off the grid" can you travel on a bike that only has a range of a hundred miles or so, anyhow? How many gas tanks can you strap to it? | ||

My desert bike I set up for the Mojave had a 250 mile range and I used the whole tank a few times. Gas mileage and battery distance are still too far apart on bikes kept light enough for on/off road. Honestly, all but 4 weeks out of the year my bike rides are under 100 miles. | ||

The problem with "range" predictions is they do not account for "real life" use. Kind of like EPA fuel economy specs. (they are real only in the lab) | ||

I'm digging it. Surely any one of those extra cases could swap for another battery without losing much cargo space if need be. What I'd really like about it would be the quietness whilst offroad. | ||

...maybe if they covered the panniers with photocells, for some solar charging? Won't double the range, but might get you to an extension cord...the electric equivalent of my MSR fuel bottle! | ||

That area would only get you around 100 watts at less than 36 volts with great cells. | ||

You know; this bike has really piqued my interest. I think it would make an almost ideal city bike for someone like me. The only thing is that I'd have to give up traveling; which I'm not about to do. But the DSR requires no maintenance other than having to plug it in and replacing tires and requires no warm up and it costs a lot less in fuel costs per mile traveled. And the bags would make grocery shopping considerably easier than having to buy a set of throw over soft bags. The more I look at it, the more practical it becomes. If I were to suddenly fall into a large amount of cash, I'd probably buy one and use it for daily riding. But right now, 20 Grand is way beyond what I can afford to come up with. But I bet it would be fun to ride. Maybe I should schedule a test ride, even though I can't afford one. | ||
