A Sunny Sunday

On Friday, we went down to Hotchkiss and Paonia. We stopped at Zack's BBQ where I ate a superb BBQ Brisket sandwich that was the match of any brisket I've ever eaten; and that's saying something. If you get the opportunity to stop in Hotchkiss, Colorado, make it a point to stop there for lunch. You won't be disappointed by the quality.

Yesterday, I went up to Grand Junction and bought oil; then, I stopped at Wallyworld and did an oil change in the parking lot. I had bought a sealable Rubbermaid plastic pan with a lid that was big enough to hold the oil and left the waste oil and filter at the auto department. Then, I stopped at the quarter car wash and washed the bike.

The weather was nice when I set out in the morning, but as I got close to Grand Junction, there was one really dark cloud that that was visibly raining and I saw one bolt of lightning. Fortunately, I didn't get caught by the rain. After this trip, I don't think I'll be buying oil and filters from the MoFoCo. The prices have jumped too high, too fast. I can get Amsoil Full Synthetic for less than Syn 3 Synthetic Blend, and I can get HiFlo Filtro oil filters with the nut welded to the end for a lot cheaper, as well. I consider both alternates to have better quality and cost a lot less.

Last night I and a a neighbor (Karen) were treated to a private concert by Two Lane Road. TLR is the duo of Susan and Rob and they play mostly Rock and Country locally. It was a good time. The concert was only an hour long, because Rob had to be out the door early, but I really enjoyed listening to him and Susan play. Susan plays organ and is the lead singer, while Rob is a pretty decent guitarist and sings harmony. They both enjoy playing quite a bit, so it was a Win for all of us. Karen and I enjoyed listening and Susan and Rob love playing.

Today, Susan and I are going to do a bit more sightseeing. I love Colorado. I really like the dry climate and the mountains make for some spectacular scenery and the roads are wonderful, for the most part. I have said many times that God created Colorado so that motorcyclists would know what Heaven is going to be like. I'd seriously consider moving out here if I could afford it.

Getting back to today, I think Susan is going to drive us up to Grand Mesa. She makes a very good tour guide and knows the area; in the same kind of way that my brother David is a great tour guide for people visiting Cincinnati.

I'm being tracked. I have a tracker that I keep in my jacket pocket. A couple of friends have access to it. I don't and I wouldn't know how to track myself if I did. If you understand how these things work and want to follow my trail as I bumble my way North, then I suggest you contact RD and he can give you the information you'll need. Or he can tell you how to contact the person who supplied me with the tracker. If you really need to track me and don't know how to contact RD, then either send me an e-mail or leave voice mail on the phone. The phone works better for now, but once I'm over the border, then probably e-mail.

Once again, I don't know when I'll be able to get Internet access. I'm writing this on Sunday morning. Hopefully, I'll be able to send this today.

Mixed Thoughts

I woke up yesterday at the Utah Lake State Park. It was a beautiful morning; cool, but with bright sunshine. I hit the road early and I rode through Salt Lake City, which was a real surprise. When I was there in 2015, it was one huge mess of a traffic jam. I just stayed in the HOV Lane (Motorcycles OK) and cruised; mostly way below the speed limit. No stop and go.

Once I got into Idaho, I decided to change my route. When I was working for Rocky Mountain Helicopters, I drove from Provo to either Salmon, Idaho, Hamilton, Montana or Priest Lake, Idaho many times. I took my preferred route to Salmon back in 2015. Yesterday, I was taken by a memory from 1978, so I decided to try a different route.

In 1978, I had taken US Rt. 20 west from Idaho Falls to Arco. Along the way, there was a sign that said, Do Not Stop For Next 68 Miles and it had the AEC logo.I remember seeing a building out in the desert that had High Tension power lines either going to it, or coming from it. I wanted to see if that was still there.

It's still there, but now it's called the EBR-I and it's a Nuclear Power Museum. I was tempted to stop and check it out, but there were ominous looking clouds with rain falling in the distance, so I gave it a miss. I wanted to get to Salmon and set up camp and Salmon was almost 150 miles away. I was traveling north on Rt.93 and The ominous clouds were definitely raining in places; one, in particular was raining so hard that I couldn't see through the falling rain.

I stopped beside some cattle pasyure and put on my rain gear, to the undivided attention on a bull on the other side of the fence and continued into the deluge. It was a heavy, cold rain and that detracted from the beauty of the canyons I was riding through. Magnificent scenery isn't as magnificent when you have to give your undivided attention to riding the bike.
The heavy, cold rain made me change my mind about camping and I wound up getting a room at the Stupid 8 Motel. That cost me a fortune. It was literally double what I was hoping it would be, but they had me over a barrel. I knew that the next motel was over 100 miles north and I really wasn't going to camp in the downpour.
In all fairness, it's a nice room and the heater dried all my gear out, but my finances have been taking a beating. If campgrounds are charging $40.00/Night and motels are running well over $100, I'm going to run out of money pretty soon. The price of Gas jumped from $3.29 to $4.09 per gallon of regular at the Colorado/Utah border. This has me thinking that I don't think I can afford to make it to Tuk.

I'm going to continue north, for now; but unless things start looking brighter, I may just end this trip early. I'm planning to go to Maine to see my new grandson in July. If it looks like I can only do that if I don't go to Tuk, then Tuk will have to wait.

Plus; I'm feeling my age. I'm going to be 73 in September. I't's getting harder to camp. My legs want to cramp when I'm getting dressed in my tent and other parts of my body hurt, just because they can. I'll be giving this some serious thought today as I proceed north.

John has stopped for the night in Kemmerer, Wyoming. He is heading home. When he gets home Monday he will return all the very generous funding. He will be writing a snippit to explain. He is going to see his new grandson after he gets home. He is really blown away by how huge the hearts are in his friends.

Ogallala, Nebraska

I left the Stupor 8 in Kemmerer, Wyoming in a downpour, this morning. I had looked at the weather radar online and at the TV weather forecast. It was supposed to just be cloudy around the area I was in, with rain along the way.I rode for about 60 miles or so and stopped in Green River, WY for coffee and a sausage McMuffin. My gear kept me dry, but it was 45 degrees and I was pretty chilled. Then my slow working brain remembered that I had my electric Jacket in the left saddlebag. So, I put it on when I finished my deluxe breakfast.

It rained off and on (mostly on) all the way across Wyoming. I stopped in Laramie for lunch, gas and to adjust my handlebars. I had hit a pothole hard and they had rotated down a bit. The sun came out and the temperature rose into the comfortable zone. I seriously considered putting the rain gear and heated jacket away, but there was one dark cloud in the distance that I didn't trust. That was a smart decision. I didn't get 10 miles before I was in the middle of an intense rain/hail storm.

When it was sunny, I felt hot with the sweatshirt, heated jacket liner and rain pants; but once it started raining, the air temperature dropped 20 to 30 degrees and all the gear felt right.

Once I got into Nebraska, the sky was blue with just a few puffy white clouds, so when I stopped for gas, I packed away the liner and sweatshirt. I still didn't trust that I was through the rain, and kept my rain pants, boot covers and winter gloves, as well as leaving the rain liner in the jacket. Once again, that was smart.

Within 20 miles, the sky ahead of me turned black with lightning between the clouds, but not hitting the earth. Despite the clouds looking so ominous, they couldn't decide whether to rain lightly or pour heavily, so the rain alternated. I had wanted to ride as far as North Platte, but the very strong gusts of wind, along with the heavy rain made me decide to put up about 50 miles early. I wasn't happy with the wind, rain and lightning and the Stupid 8 sign was all I needed to see.

Still; I covered something like 520 miles today. If I can do that two more times, I'll be home on Sunday evening.

I hope I'm through with the rain. I'd really like to ride without the extra gear on.

Here is his brother's snippit,
"Hey gang, Crusty light, or Crusty Junior, or whatever the hell you want to call me. John is out of surgery, and the doc says he did fine. Wound up being a double bypass, with a valve replacement.

He was sleeping when I left, and I will be seeing him tomorrow, if he wakes up. I should also be getting his phone and laptop to him in the next day or two, so everyone can get in touch with him.

If you have any other questions, R.D. knows how to get hold of me if needed. THANKS for everyone's concern.

Thursday update:
OK, today's update. He was in a better mood. He was not begging for any pain meds, and he seemed to be in better spirits. But he was tired. And he is REALLY happy about a tissue valve, even if it DID come from a cow.
Dave will probably try to get a snippet out tomorrow when He is over at Crusty's house again. I will start deleting prior posts of Crusty's ordeal. 2 days down with 3 or more to go.

And Friday from Dave, "Just left the hospital, and John is in a better mood. They have spent a while this morning pulling tubes out of his body, and he is feeling a bit better, but still in some pain. (to be expected) They are talking about moving him to a "regular" room at some point today or tomorrow. Hold off on any phone calls. HIs cel phone has NO reception in the hospital.
The aides came in to take him to do some exercise, so that was my cue to leave. I'll be back tomorrow.

Per Dave today,

"I guess it's to be expected. Original prognosis was for John to be getting discharged today. But, (and you know John...) he has to make things difficult.

Yesterday he was going to get a shower! His first since going into the hospital on Halloween, and he was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, things did not go as well as anyone would have liked, and the shower was cut short as the aides helped him back to the bed. Hopefully, (HOPEFULLY...) he will be getting out tomorrow.

His overall mood yesterday was good, and he seemed to be making decent progress with all the different rehab things they had him doing. But, 73 years old has a habit of making things a little difficult. No, things aren't the same as it was 11 years ago, and I think he may be starting to realize that it's gonna take a longer time to recover from this one.

But his mood still seems to be upbeat. I'm heading up there to visit once this goes out. I hope the mood hasn't changed overnight.

THANKS to everyone who has sent get well cards. I'll be bringing them up with me so he can read them. I hope they will brighten his day."

Turd's Day:
Per David,
"Word in the corridors is that they are tired of the crusty ol bastard, so they are going to try and send him home tomorrow. Of course, this is the second or third time I have heard this one, so wait and see.
Yesterday found him actually eating hospital food! He seemed to be in a better mood than on Tuesday, and when I spoke to him this morning he sounded even better. So maybe.........
As always, I'll keep you updated until Crusty Blood Boogers take over!"
