I saw them on their R40 tour. I guess he had cancer during the tour, and probably knew it. Makes sense, now, why Geddy kept saying they would never play together again. What a loss.
Heartbreaking news... Seen the band three times 1984, (Power Windows), 1992 (Presto), and 2010 (played Moving Pictures end to end). Have a dozen+ CDs/cassettes and have and read most if not all of his books...
Always appreciated the musicianship of Rush, great skill and pure quality of effort...
Some of you (most of you?) probably know he was also a serious motorcyclist. He often rode cross country between Rush’s shows on his BMW GS. I believe it was on the ADVrider site a few years ago someone mentioned Peart stopped by TWO on one of his trips. Peart was never comfortable with fan adoration but apparently he enjoyed talking to people who didn’t treat him like a rock god. It would have been pretty cool to talk motorcycling with him.
Often quoted this lyric when mounting the Uly before the morning commute: ". . .learning that we're only immortal for a limited time." From "Dreamline" and the Roll the Bones album. Love that line...
My favorite piece still is Tom Sawyer, especially how it opens with the synth effect, I can't get enough of that I guess, even after 40 years. The drum part is not complex, but he played with such precision and confidence he made every note count. Even the drum solo is carefully considered. I suppose I aspired to that style early on. I didn't care about coming in first or anything, I just wanted most of what I did to count toward something. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auLBLk4ibAk
"From the backstabbing coworker to the meddling sister in law, you are in charge of how you react to the people and events in your life. You can either give negativity power over your life or you can choose happiness instead. Take control and choose to focus on what is important in your life. Those who cannot live fully often become destroyers of life."
A friend was seated next to his current wife on a plane, and he asked her if he was worried about Neil hooking up with groupies while he was on the road. She laughed and said that all of his groupies were middle-aged guys on motorcycles!
"2112" was one the cassettes I got with the Columbia Record House offer of "13 albums for one penny" deal in the 70's. . .(showing my age. . .much?) After his passing, started reading "Far and Away", a book published by Peart in 2011 that I put on the book shelf once received. The first vignette in the book references the small (and I mean small) town in the Adirondacks where I'm from. . .
Neil talks about his love of Big Band Swing in one of his books,I think it was Roadshow. We both grew up with the drummers from that period:Gene Krupa,Louie Bellson,Buddy Rich and many others.I love how he used triggers to bring that music into his solo's.
