Universally Poor Service. Or Oops as we called them back when I was the shipping dept. Convertible top glass had a 50/50 shot at arriving as a big flat rectangular maraca. I do give Oops credit for making shipping easy for small businesses.
The Post Office has an incentive program to make shipping painless. Ask your Carrier for a referral, and mention them to The manager that will help you out. E-bay shippers are everywhere. I had customers that ran businesses out of their homes. Drones, dolls, clothing. Now major companies started out of rented garages. LaserMax, ( laser sights ) REDACTED ( military optics ) Classified, ( I'd tell you, but...) And weird things like figurine repaint artists, baby clothes designers, etc. Entrepreneurs!
( My niece wanted some elven bust, near life size, a hand made silly expensive thing. Then she would send it to a different artist that would repaint it to incredibly lifelike detail. Eyelashes, custom eye color, etc. Not my cuppa. But I've spent silly money on my hobbies, too. )
The fictional evil guy from Seinfeld would be fired, and probably arrested, Or course the main characters weren't nice humans either. Cliff from Cheers was a better example of the company.  Alcoholic...
Management didn't like the Kevin Costner version from the movie, but we did. Especially those of us working urban apocalypse routes. And every rural route carrier.  |

A good standard for packing materials is to be able to survive being thrown across a room with malice. The drivers tend to be good...though they generally don't want to hear about your broken stuff. The warehouse is where the real fun happens.
I always insure items to their full value. |

When I drove for Indy-Dash (started as a movie reel delivery service for theaters). I would pick up 8'+ fluorescent bulbs in boxes. Our warehouse druggies were beasts with light weight boxes. |

Back in '85, I had a UPS box truck roll over and landed the box right on the front corner of my 2 month old Trans AM. Driver crawled out of the cab, and down onto the roof of my car doing even more damage on the way down. That was a learning experience. First thing UPS did was duct tape over everything that identified it as a UPS truck, as if the color didn't give it away! Then I found out that they are self insured, so I had to deal with them directly. First day of that was filled with denial that the accident even happened. Once I satisfied them that I was actually involved in the accident, and not a reporter or something seeking information that they want to keep quite, they got much better to deal with. They are very careful with their public image. I'm willing to bet that a few things got broken when that truck went over. I got to see myself in the local paper! |
