Am pondering a work related relocation to Virginia. The company will pay for everything so the move itself will literally cost me nothing. Work is in Manassas and am willing to have a 30-40 minutes one-way commute time. At this time, the major deterrence is the housing cost, which is %20 more than my current geography. I have been told to look south and/or east, and not towards the DC direction. So for now, Bealeton and surrounding region seems to be best candidates. The sale of my current house will majorly help in buying a house over there. Anyway...Aside from the higher housing cost, I was wondering if any member here are from VA can tell me something about the state. Am Asian-American, so what of the local people? Am also a veteran so I hope that mean something. The reference point is Desert Storm. Driving/riding condition? Wildlife on the road? I have an S1 and would like to keep it intact. Local weather? As humid as Florida? I was at MacDill for five yrs. Am a gun owner with a UT CCP, so what of the VA gun laws? Am not into wine, am a beer and bourbon man, so is there anything unique about alcohol in VA that I should know about? Basically, am looking for any info about VA that locals are willing to tell the truth, the whole truth, and the unvarnished truth. Thnx for any input. Roderick |

I live in Berryville, on the other side of the Blue Ridge and recommend living in the Shenandoah valley (less humid). Reasonable commute on I66 to Manassas and lower costs and prices than closer in. Winchester H D is Buell friendly! The whole area is vet-friendly and I don’t think you would see any bad attitudes. VA has pretty good gun laws now, but with the new Dem legislature, who knows? Booze, seems about the same as other states. |

I lived in Richmond from '84 to'00,moved to Buena Vista, although still working out of Richmond until 2011,then had a job change or two, ending up near Baltimore in the People's Republic of MD. It's only been three years and I'm still missing VA. The state has been conservative -leaning for quite a while, but this month has not been kind to that status politically. I don't know if the UT ccp is reciprocated, but it is a "Shall Issue" state, so getting it in VA isn't difficult. I think VA is pretty good to veterans, from what I understand. A large Asian - American population lives in NOVA, so you won't stand out as much as in more rural VA. Bruce can speak to that more than I can. The roads are typically spectacular for motorcycling; That's why I moved up to Rockbridge Co... Feel free to ask more questions! |

Look into West Virginia. Happier tax laws than VA, happier CCW laws, and less expensive property. Might slightly increase your drive...but worth every mile IMHO. |
