Got a whole package of bacon in the oven right now. The last of my best homegrown tomatoes are begging to become BLT's. I add some good cheese, cracked pepper, even some bean sprouts if I've got 'em. Butter lettuce, brioche or butterbread.

Fever, Bacon and Thanksgiving

I find the way people respond to my Snippets interesting. Sometimes, I’ll pour my heart into writing one and I get no response at all. Sometimes, I’ll write a light little essay and get an avalanche of responses on one forum and nothing from another. And, of course, sometimes I get a spread of responses.

The other day, I wrote about making a BLT, and boy, did I get responses. In that Snippet, I also wrote about how this bug is affecting me. Everybody immediately jumped to the conclusion that I was feeling better. Well; that’s true… at times. I hope so.

I’m not over the bug yet. I’ll feel pretty good for a while, but then I feel like crap again. It’s kind of strange. I either feel 100% or I feel weak, tired and my head hurts and I’m sweating heavily. I spent both Tuesday and yesterday in the house all day and on Wednesday, when I was out and about, when I got home, I slept for a couple of hours and I was still ready for bed at an early hour. I hope that I feel better today, but I’m already sweating and my head hurts mildly. I ‘m hoping that it’s easing up. I haven’t felt feverish, so I think there is improvement; I just want things to improve faster.

I just realized that I haven’t been out on the bike since I got home on Monday. I bet if I get out on it, I’ll start feeling better quicker. I hope so, anyhow. I have a few errands to do today, so I’ll know by the end of the day.

One of those errands involves bacon. I didn’t have the ambition to make either a BLT or a Bacon burger for dinner last night. I’m thinking that a BLT would be good for breakfast. That would use up most of the bacon I have left. But Kroger is having a two day sale on Smithfield Bacon. Three bucks a pound is a very good price. They also have Tide Pods (13 count) on sale for a buck forty nine – that’s another good deal. I also need to pick up some cream for my coffee.

So that leaves me with the question, “What am I going to do with That bacon?” I suppose I could get some stewed tomatoes and Italian green beans (I’ve already got garlic and the assorted spices) and wait for Thanksgiving. Yeah; that makes sense. I’ll just put the bacon in the freezer for a month.

OK; that takes care of that. Ma’s Italian Green Beans for a side dish. Now, all I have to do is figure out what to have for a main course. I have three different main courses fighting in my head. I’ve decided to have a nice Rib Eye for Christmas, so I’m thinking a 2” thick baked pork chop would be tasty. Or maybe I should get a Capon and make meat stuffing. That’s a bit of work, but it really is a tasty meal. I’m not big on Turkey; I prefer a Capon. The only problem is that that’s a meal for many and I’ll be eating it alone. I’d be eating leftovers for a week! Or, I could do like I did last year and have Rib Eye for both Holidays. I really love a good Rib Eye. With either a baked or mashed potatoes with beef gravy, Ma’s beans and flaky layer biscuits, it really would be a wonderful meal. But I haven’t had that really thick pork chop in a long time. Coat it in Shake & Bake and bake it for 45 minutes at 425 F and it’s cooked completely, but it’s still juicy and tastes really good and it also goes with those sides. Well; I’ve got a few weeks to decide.

Well; the fever is back. I guess that today’s going to be another day spent in the house. I think I’ll wash my helmet liner then try to pick out a movie to watch.

I'm pretty sure it's just a flu related bug. I had Bird Flu back around '08 or '09 and it acted the same way; although when I felt sick, I was really sick. It's nowhere near as bad as that was, so I'm just going to ride it out. A friend asked if it might be Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease is really bad. It's very painful and affects the nerves. It's usually caused by tick bites and leaves a definite mark on the skin. Did you know that Lyme Disease was named for Old Lyme, Connecticut? That's where the first recorded case was reported.

As I said, I'm pretty sure this is just a bug and not a really serious illness. If I get worse, I'll head over and see the Quack, uh, I mean Doctor.

$15ish cost, get some Oscillococcinum. It's intended to be taken early on as you start getting sick, but it should still help. I keep some around just in case.

It's easy. Go to the Help/Instructions on the bottom of the page and click on it. Then go to formatting and click again.Scroll down until you see Miscellaneous and you'll find Strike. It will tell you to format it by using a \ followed by the word "strike" and that followed by the bracket {. Then type the word you want to strike through followed by a closing bracket }. For instance quack becomes quack

My sweetie's about to work up her 2nd batch of hot sauce ever. First batch happened the other day- turned out the consistency of Pete's, kinda thin, almost a marinade. She used 4 scorpion peppers, our tomatoes, celery, guava paste, etc., finished with a bit of OJ. Very citrus-y, good and hot! We've not tried hot wings with it yet, but everyone who's tried it has raved, even my sous chef. Had a big, burly, "manly" coworker try it, turned him into Woody Woodpecker.

The hard part about making hot sauce is getting it to the finished product.

Bike of the Year

I was just over at Cycle World.com to glimpse what’s happening in the world of motorcycles and saw their 10 best bikes of the year article. Once again, I disagree with their choices. Not all their choices; I have no opinion about their dirt bike selections since I don’t ride a dirt bike and have no interest in them. But when it comes to street bikes, I think they have severe rectal occulitis. I do not believe that the Duck-atti Diavel is the best cruiser, and I disagree with all their other top picks.

This isn’t anything new; I’ve never agreed with the choices magazines make about which bike is the best. And neither does the marketplace. I don’t think a Harley-Davidson has ever been the top choice, even though Harley outsells almost all other street bikes combined. And looking back over the years, I’ve seen a few BOTYs fall flat on their face. I remember Motorcyclist Magazine picked the Suzuki Tempter (a 650cc twin) as bike of the year. Does anybody remember them? They might have sold half a dozen bikes before Suzuki dropped them. Or the Yamaha GTS 1000. It had a “modern” front end and was billed as the bike of the future. I think there are still a few sitting in the dark corner of a warehouse somewhere.

And to be a bit more current, there’s the Yamaha Ryker (Ryken? Lichen?). It’s a bike with Two front ends That means twice as many parts to wear out, and you get to replace two front tires instead of just one when it’s time for new rubber. Boy; you sure see them selling like hotcakes, now don’tcha?

In the meantime, there are a couple of bikes that are on my Bike of the Year list. At the top is a new Roadster. I like the improved suspension and the Fuel Injection. I plan to get one and build it into my “Gentleman’s Express”; but that’s no secret. I’ve been talking about doing that for a while. The other bike that catches my eye is the new Royal Enfield Interceptor. It’s the closest thing to a modern day British bike that I’ve seen, and it looks like it would be a fun ride. One other bike that tickles my interest is the Royal Enfield Himalayan. It might be only a 400, but I bet it would be fun to ride (slowly) to Tuktoyaktuk on back roads.

I personally feel that the lowly Sportster should be named Motorcycle of the Century. It’s been in production since 1957 and has been upgraded continuously up to the present day. It’s the perfect “Raw Material” bike. It can be transformed into any style of bike you want fairly easily. It can be built into a chopper, bagger, dirt bike, sport bike, drag bike, Flat Tracker, Adventure bike, you name it, without a lot of difficulty. There’s an immense source of aftermarket parts readily available.

Erik Buell took the Sportster engine and got 100 reliable Horsepower out of it. The Buells built under the MoFoCos watch had flaws, but most of them were directly due to piss poor corporate politics and undue influence from the bean counters. The “Graffitti Bike” and the lack of a “Trap Door” cassette type transmission come readily to mind.

Anyhow, I like my Sportster. And I’m going to buy another. That will be MY Motorcycle of the Year. And screw the magazines opinions.

Yes, Erik Buell got 100 reliable HP out if a Sportster almost 20 years ago, yet H-D gets only 67 out if it. Want to get to that 100 HP mark? Get your checkbook ready. Just the performance ECU that will do the job is $900. (I have an FP3 and it won't do the job) Plus cams, exhaust and intake.

Generally I like my Roadster. I think Sportsters are fantastic machines, but the HP is embarrassing and building more power costs more than a good used Buell.

That being said, I don't usually agree with the magazine chosen bike of the year either. But I also know that MY bike of the year probably won't be on the market in 3 years from lack sales. I've seen it time and time again.

http://www.motorcycledaily.com/2019/10/indian-rede fines-cruiser-v-twin-performance-with-new-122-hors epower-powerplus-engine/

My neighbor picked up a Scout a while back, after having one of the big-bore Triumph twin cruisers. The Scout is pretty dang slick. He says he's scared of the performance... one of these days I'm gonna wangle a test ride of that thing. Motor even sounds impressive. I remember when the Honda Shadow ACE came out... it's amazing what they do to copy the sound of a Mofoco motor. Some of them actually do sound nice. I miss the sound of my old Sprint, hard to beat a triple for ear candy.

The performance of the Scout is what I'm curious about, motor and handling. Wonder if they'll carry that motor into a sport iteration...

I’ve Got a Bad Idea

The heat was on when I got up this morning. That’s not unusual for late October. Winter’s coming. As I usually do, I went to Weather Underground while I was enjoying my first cup of coffee and saw that the current temp was 44 F. Not too bad; it was close to freezing a couple of mornings in Suches.

However; Southwest Airlines had an ad on the page about cheap flights. That led me to explore prices to places I might want to go. I could do a round trip to Boston for $250.00, or a flight to LAX for about the same. That led me to pricing flights from LAX to BNE. BNE is Brisbane, Queensland. Combining the Southwest prices and the prices of flights to BNE, I could do a round trip for $1250.00.

That’s a lot more than I can afford. But then I started looking at flights from Cincinnati to Brisbane and I found that I can book a flight for a little over a Grand.

That’s still more than I can afford, but it’s got me thinking. The part that really piqued my interest is that one of the flights is on Hawaiian Airlines and I’d have to change planes in Hawaii. I’ve never been to Hawaii, and even though I’d only be there for a six hour layover, it would be someplace new. However; when I looked for it again, I couldn’t find that deal; but it still has me thinking.

The bottom line in any event is that I can’t afford it. But, maybe… If I only make minimum payments on the plastic (minimum by my standards - roughly double the card’s minimum) and I’m willing to extend my payoff date on the card by a few months, it might be possible. That would mean putting off getting my new bike for a few more months, though.

Like I said, it’s a bad idea. It’s almost on a par with waking up with a hangover and deciding not to go to work that day, then deciding I was tired of that job, so I got a flight to Nairobi and spent five months in Kenya. That may have been a bad idea, but it sure made my life a lot more interesting and I still have the memories and have good stories to tell because I did it. “You cannot bring this into our Country!”

And I could maybe get the '79 up and running. I have a pair of shocks that will go right on it. I bet I could find some of the other parts it needs fork legs, clutch plates, brake parts and such and bring them over with me. Then I might be able to get around on it. That would be a hoot. Riding around Queensland on a ‘79 XLCH (converted to an XLH).

And even if I can’t get it to reliable enough standards, I could still go into Gatton for the Christmas Party. That would be fun. Melia and I did that last time I was there, and even though we were both pretty broke, we had a good time. And a trip to Fernvale for a steak sandwich or just going into the Café 33 for a cup of flat white coffee would also be good things to do. And maybe I could go for walks with Titan and get more exercise there than I would get here. And possibly head down to visit Kristyn and Matt in Ocean Shores and go swimming in bathwater warm southern Pacific water. And there are all the trees and flowers; purple Jacarandas, bright orange Flame Trees, Bougainvilleas in various colors, Bottle Trees with their bulbous trunks. And colorful parrots, pink Galahs, white Cockatoos.

And I could see Melia and Roni Ann and Kristyn and their spouses and kids and maybe even Ron...

You know; it might just be a good idea and not a bad one. I’d better think on it a bit more.

With the right planning a whole day+ lay-over in Hawaii. No hotel, just sleep in the airport. My oldest just got back from Australia. They stayed a few days in Hawaii on the way.

Now to play the other shoulder angel: Probably need to get that plastic down.

Brad; a Roundabout is a traffic circle. I think you mean a Walkabout. And yes, the critters and landscapes are awesome. There's something really special about sitting on the veranda having your morning coffee and watching kangaroos out in the pasture.

I just talked with Melia; I think I might just do it. Now, if only I could find that flight deal with Hawaiian Airlines...
