Turtle Town, Duck Town and Owl Town

I rode through both Turtle Town and Duck Town in Tennessee on Route 68 on my way here. Today, I realized that Jimís Smokiní Que is almost in Owl Town. I guess that people in this part of the country really like animals.

Iíve been here in Suches for a few days, and itís been a mixed bag of experiences. Iíve had fun and Iíve ridden over some great roads and Iíve been hanging out with some really good people, but thereís something weird going on with me.

I havenít been quite myself the past couple of days. Iíve been really tired and Iím not riding as well as I usually do. Iím a bit of a real space shot. Today, I felt like I had a really mild fever off and on. I feel more with it for a while, but then Iím back out in the Twilight Zone. I donít know if Iím coming down with something, or what. I hope it passes soon.

Today, the weather sucked. Itís been raining since mid-morning, pretty heavy at times. We all piled into various cars and went to Jimís Smokiní Que for lunch. Iíve had ribs three days in a row. The Baked Beans at Jimís are OK, but not great. I tried the Peanut Butter Pie for the first time and discovered that Iíve been missing something really good. I seldom eat the same thing three days in a row, but this is the only time Iíll get to enjoy the ribs from Jimís for at least six months. Jimís has the best ribs of any place Iíve eaten ribs at and if I get a little burned out on them (I havenít), then Iíll have a good long break to get over that. Glitch and his beautiful wife, Ann came by the lodge here and hung out with us for a few hours this afternoon. Heís looking better every time I see him. Seeing the two of them was a definite bright spot.

I rode a few roads that were new to me. Mike and I went to Cabin Coffee in Blairsville on Thursday and met up with Joe Albert. After we had coffee, Mike led us over a few new roads that were wonderful. The only name I remember was Hicks Gap Road. It was all twists and turns and we didnít see a single car the whole time we were on it.

Iím planning to head toward Birminhgham, Alabama tomorrow. I really want to see all the changes theyíve made to the Barber Museum. I took a few photos yesterday, Iíll have to download them; maybe tomorrow morning, if Froggy shows me how to do that on this laptop. Otherwise, Iíll have to wait until I get home and use the Macbook

Briefly

I feel like homemade sh*t. Iíve been debating it since I woke up, but Iím just going to bag it and head for home. Hopefully, Iíll get there tonight. No Barber. No Air park. No backroads. Iím just going to get on the Interstate and head north.

Iíll write more when I get home.

Halfway Home

Iím halfway to Cheviot from Suches and Iím taking a break. Iím hoping to make it home before the rain gets there, but I doubt that will happen. Itís been an interesting ride so far. I left Two Wheels a little after 5:00 AM and discovered that riding twisty roads in the fog with a fever is very otherworldly. My speeds are down; itís about all I can do to keep up to the speed limit. I pulled over a few times to let cars behind me pass because I was going so slow. I had to put on my rain pants because the fog was dense enough to wet my jeans. Now, The sun is out, but I might just keep the rain pants on. Then again, itís warming up and it might be better to take them off.

Iíll be happy to make it home; I feel like a bucket full of smashed a**holes. I hope I get over this quickly.

I got home about 3:15 or so. The fever broke after my last rest stop. I've been sweating heavily since then. I took a hot shower when I got in and I'm going to keep a low profile for the rest of the day.

I was lucky and beat the rain. I'll write more later; my ass is draggin'.

Yeah, it definitely wouldn't hurt to visit a physician.

I've never been around him when he was feeling like this... so, better safe than sorry.

Vitamin C, zinc, hot tea, homemade chicken noodle soup if possible. Have someone bring some Chik-fil-A soup if needed, they do a good job.

If it's a flu bug, find this stuff called Oscillococcinum. It's a homeopathic remedy that basically minimizes flu symptoms- you'll still know you've got a bug, but lets you remain functional and not miserable.

Another day crappy, hello Doc.

What I said. Rest well, warm, long, wake up to the nest day, hopefully with a fancy pre-programmed coffee gadget... eat some vitamins, and an adequate breakfast.

Non-Motorcycle Babblings

Iíve had this itch for a good BLT for a while and yesterday, I fixed one for dinner.

You see, Iíve had this unopened package of bacon in the refrigerator for a few weeks. I got it to make bacon wrapped chicken tenders, but when I made the first batch, they didnít taste nearly as good as I thought they would.

I thought about making a batch of Maís Italian Green Beans, but I donít have the main ingredients; the beans or the stewed tomatoes. Besides; now that Iíve figured out how to do it right, I think I should save making that for really special occasions.

The bacon called to me every time I opened the refrigerator. I could see it sitting on the shelf, just waiting to be fried. I thought about making a BLT, but I didnít have any of the ingredients. No bread, no lettuce, no tomatoes and no mayonnaise. All I had was the bacon.

Yesterday, I went shopping with David. Wednesday is his shopping day, since itís the only day of the week when he is always off from work. He needed to hit a few stores, which was good for me. I went through the weekly ads to see who had what on sale and made my shopping list. Laundry pods, a 32 pack of water, Brioche rolls, sliced cheese, and I decided to get the ingredients and make a BLT for dinner. I also got a few items that werenít on the list, but thatís normal for me when I go shopping.

Now yesterday was an unusual day for me in a few ways. First; Iíve still got the bug that had me change my travel plans and come home instead of Tramping around. Iíd get a fever for a while, but then it would go away and Iíd feel fine. I found myself falling asleep at 9:00 PM, but yesterday, morning at 4:00 AM I woke up from some really crazy dreams and I was wide awake, so I took a shower and made coffee a couple of hours earlier than usual. However; I was weakened by the bug, so that when David dropped me off at home, I hit the recliner and was out cold for a couple of hours.

When I woke up, I really was craving that BLT, so I went into the kitchen and threw a roll into the toaster oven and put five slices of bacon in the skillet. It was supposed to be only four slices, but I didnít notice that one slice was actually two. I wasn't fully awake yet.

With the lettuce, tomato and all the bacon, it was tough to eat that tall a sandwich, but boy, was it good! It was exactly what Iíd been craving. I had used all the good ingredients; good bacon, fried crisp, sliced fresh tomato (not hydroponic) Hellmanís mayonnaise and iceberg lettuce (the only kind that doesnít affect my anti-coagulant). My taste buds broke into their Happy Dance.

Thereís only one problem. Now I want to fix a BLT for breakfast. Maybe Iíll do just that, or maybe Iíll wait and have a BLT for dinner tomorrow night. Or maybe I should get an onion and slice it up and fry it in butter and use the bacon, onion, sharp white cheddar and a quarter pound of 85% lean ground beef and make a truly wonderful burger for dinner. With some seasoned roasted potatoes and Heinz 57, it would be ecstasy!

You know; that sounds good, too!

You can do a lot with the wrapped chicken, I've been experimenting. The recipe posted here was good, with a good brown sugar coating. But you can also do the wrap and simply add a dry rub of your choice - I've done some chipotle rub, some montreal steak rub, and some Cowboy Rub from JK's Steakhouse. Nixing the brown sugar really lets the bacon flavor come through; using the brown sugar adds to the "candied" effect (and makes some awesome dipping juices to sop up with a roll or biscuit!).
