Bunch of us MR2 owners got together today for some BBQ and automobile related hijinks.

First time in this car for me breaking all four wheels loose on purpose. It was a blast.

Definitely looking forward to doing it again. I learned a lot about the handling characteristics of the car, pushing the tires and suspension to their limits. Now... I need more horsepower. Like some of these turbo 2nd gen and K-swapped motors have.

Did the fancy whale's tail help the dude parked next to you? ; )

Autocross at that level would call for roll bars/roll cages. Fun times, no doubt!

NICE. I would imagine there's a lot to be learned about the handling of that car before putting more power to it. I know the Miata would really respond to the gas pedal, either lifting or stepping on it. Often a touch of brakes at the entrance of a corner will get it turning, then you can really get on the power through the entire turn.

How many runs did they get you? Our club used to really push cars through and you could expect 10 to 12 runs per event. They would manage that with 40-50 cars registered for an event. That Miata club is one of the things I miss about IL. Not much else.

This was not a formal event, it was just a gathering of guys with MR2's and blessed that one of us had access to this large flat paved surface. We were hanging around BBQing and just jawing about cars with intermittent runs.

I went out about 15 times, and had a blast.

The big whale tale is useful at the race track. No effect here.

Here he is at Road Atlanta passing a Camaro across the start/finish line. Skip to about 30 seconds in the video.

Well that explains some things. I thought you looked kind of relaxed for an auto cross run, tooling around with one hand on the wheel for much of it. I know the courses our club put up gave precious few moments to catch up on things. I was also wondering about the lack of a helmet. Still looks like a great time!

LOL- as long as it's useful. I love seeing the local p-zunks slapping a whale tail on their Geo or Civic or such. Looks like your buddy's got some motor there.

The first thing my first instructor did was yank my had off the shifter in the middle of turn one, at speed, and put it on the wheel! Unless you're shifting, both hands on the wheel!! I can still hear him! I never did that again!
I ran Autocross three times for a local VW dealer. I took two thirds and a second. The guy that always took first was in a Honda Accord and he looked like he was going slow! Obviously he actually knew how to drive. I had no track experience so I just went out and punished the car. They were rabbits and one scirocco. Being front wheel drive and the course always having a 360 halfway so we ran it backwards from there, I could get the inside rear tire off the ground all the way around the circle. I don't know if it was faster but it was a crowd pleaser!

Be careful Matt, that bug can cost a lot of money!

First thing to address, if it hasn't been done already, is some good summer only tires, and an adjustable suspension. Those will do far more than HP. It also sets a good foundation for when you add the HP.

Watch out; it's an addition as strong as any drug. It's easy to find yourself just dumping all your cash into making your car faster, handle better, etc.

One of the memories I have of when I raced was writing a check for my entry fee after I spent all my money on the bike. I wrote the check, even though I didn't have enough money in the bank to cover it because my wife got paid on Tuesday and her check would be deposited before the entry fee check got back to our bank.

As I said, it's an addiction; but the high you get is better than any drug that I ever tried. And I tried quite a few.

So I just picked up my 2nd MKII Turbo about 6 weeks ago.
Not driven much as the tires on it are shot. But last weekend I picked up 93+ wheels and will, hopefully, put those on today.
Been doing little fixes, like swapping to the 93 shifter, Ill be fixing the tach soon etc

Until soccer ends Im wrapped up in coachcing, eating up my time.
But good to be in a 2 again.
