I remember being a mush-brained kid in middle school. I had a teacher who had us all do oral reports, either on peak oil or the coming ice age. She provided all the magazines we needed to get our information. Kind of made sure that we could only hear one side of things. We then sat through 30-some oral reports on how in 20 years we wouldn't have gas for cars, or oil to heat our homes, all while we were going to be in a new ice age if we didn't radically change our ways. That's a hell of a thing to do to a bunch of 10 year olds! Thankfully, around that same time in my life, my dad would take me out in the woods and teach me about caring for the land. The actual land that we were walking on, not the land of the dystopian future that is always 20 years away. Guess which lessons have served me better. Funny how it's always the same catastrophes that are 20 years away, caused by the same evil oil corporations, with the same solutions. Oddly, when I walk that same land as I did when I was a mush-brained kid, I see that the world around me is in better shape than it was, roughly half a century ago when I was taught we were only 20 years from certain doom. | ||
