OK, got lots of fart smellers here, help me out... we have a great dog who requires 3 different pills to control seizures. Obviously I'd rather not resort to shoving them down his throat, but about half the time that's what's needed. He's a dang picky little bastid.

I'm looking for a homemade pill recipe, failsafe, that I can use to make this twice daily chore easy. I work at a high end steakhouse, so I've brought home "treats" such as every prime cut of beef scrap known, chicken, salmon, venison, lamb, most recently boiled duck meat. That seemed to be a hit at first, now he's back to "yeah, I dunno about that, nah" and then here goes the thumb down his throat.

Ideas? Thanks in advance.

+1,000.

Works like a champ. If he's dedicated enough to suck the pill out of the PB...let him seize. (not really, but - and I'm a dog person - sometimes they're just THAT stubborn!)

I've also had mixed luck just putting pills in a bowl of dry food, ESPECIALLY if they're hungry.

Saw a YouTube video once - damned if I can find it now...

Basically the guy did have it stuck in some kind of meat/treat. When the dog showed interest in the meat/treat the dog owner said "Oh no, this is not for you. You can't have it." and continued that until the dog was relentless. When the dog owner finally succumbed to the dogs newfound wishes, the dog gobbled it down like nobodies business.

Well, I found it! He didn't even use any meat/treat...

I hate to say it, but the old finger down the throat method is probably the most efficient way. My dog Max was the best dog ever (other dog owners are free to disagree) but he wasn't too thrilled about taking pills. I have pretty big hands and I just grabbed him by his nose and shoved the pill down with my finger. Then I held his mouth shut and stroked his throat until he swallowed. It sounds mean but it didn't hurt him a bit and he didn't hate me for it. A treat afterward doesn't hurt either. Just my .02.

Joe- yeah, no, the occasional visits from "Mr. Flinchy" are never fun. Almost always in bed with us, horrible way to snap awake, then required change of the bedsheets.
Ideally he gets a bath the next day. We've learned to live with it- I actually grew up with an epileptic chihuahua, so it doesn't bother me as much as it does my SO.
We even spend the $$$ on CBD oil for him. He's worth it all, for sure.
He's just DANG picky sometimes. The Basenji OTOH is the biggest mooch pooch... we've gotta be careful that he doesn't grab the treat with meds by accident.

Maybe I've overthought things, IIRC we've not done peanut butter. We'll see. ; )

Well, dangit- just as I was finishing my BSTC sammich (bacon, sprouts, HG tomato, cheese), gave him the last bit of Havarti, nopers. Most spoiled dogs of Blount county.

There used to be a joke on the internet about how to give a cat a pill. Freaking hilarious! A couple of pages of bleeding, ruined drapes, trips to the ER and welding gloves. At the end of it there was a new question.

How to give a dog pill: Wrap it in bacon.

Might work with Mr. Finicky.

Actually brought home some braised pork belly, nopers. Then I hammered it crisp in the broiler, processed into bacon bits, smooshed that into soft cheese, again nopers.

He's a piece of work, oh yeah. We've tried gobs of tricks, that's why I'm posting up here.

Keep 'em coming!

Dwardo, +1000. That's the default, no fun for me or him, but he doesn't fight me. Gets a back scratch/belly rub and a lot of praise, twice daily.

Joe- my tomatoes are coming in strong. "Butterbread" is a brand that toasts perfectly for a BLT. Get some butter lettuce, some Duke's mayo, your fave bacon (got Benton's down the road, other brand jalapeno thick cut in the freezer, just finished Oscar Meyer), and tomatoes like mine.

There is a thing called a pill pocket. You put the pill in it and pinch it shut. Greenies makes pill pockets and Milkbone makes pill pouches.

We had the same thing with seizures with our pup as he got older. There was one pill I swear was combined habenaro and whale sh** from his reaction to it.
What I did was take a 1/4 marshmallow and for 2 days gave it to him for his treats.
Then started putting the a pill in it. The sticky part let's you pinch it shut.
He liked them so much they were pretty much swallowed whole.
But if they opened up a little and he tasted whale sh**, it was game over for that round.
But a 'blank' marshmallow restored his faith.

Didn't seem to bother him. Of course, it was 1/4 marshmallow per day. Probably that much sugar in the regular treats.
Now strangely grapes are bad for them - renal failure.

You need something that hides the smell of the "pill".
Is it a tablet or a capsule?
A capsule might work better.
Remember what sounds tasty to us may not appeal to a dog.
Dogs will eat some pretty smelly, nasty stuff and enjoy it.

The content of Dog food is not regulated. There is evidence to prove some brands cause fits. change brands.
Why don't you lie to the dog about how great it is? He might swallow it.
It's like swallowing the Buell is a great investment pill. It ain't easy to swallow in the light of the undisputable evidence.
Swallow the pill yourself first then give it to the dog.

We've tried the pill pockets too. I'm just gonna keep trying to formulate something he'll take regularly. Little bugger is too smart- he knows when it's about time, or if we're standing in the kitchen putting things together for RPT (Rocky Pill Time).

It's about time for his AM doses... win! Mama sitting at the table eating her breakfast, she feeds them with smooshed cheese. May or may not work this evening.

Get a syringe dart gun. Melt down the pill in sterile water, put it in the dart and shoot him in the ass. Then explain to him how much less painful, easier, and better tasting the other way is.

Worked on my kids several years ago. Only took five or six times for the smarter kids!

OK Vern... as much as we do our dawgie talks every day to both dogs, that would be hard to explain.

Sometimes we wanna shoot both dogs, but we love them more. I'd love to hire a sniper when they piss in the house, shoot a dick off. Still love them more. ; )

Crush the pill into a powder and mix with a little beef gravy.

Might look into that. Two of the three pills are capsules, one is a tablet. I'll have to find out if the tablet is intended to be time release. A slurpy medicine slurry!

Thanks all.

We have used liverworst and cream cheese (not together) successfully.

Hmmm. Cream cheese aint a bad idea. There's lots of different ones, I'll look into that. Hadn't thought of liverwurst either.

Thanks buddy. We've just been cramming them down his gullet lately, he doesn't seem to mind too much, but it'd be nicer to not have to do that.
It's like we're petting him, kinda, but not really. Blech.
