So I'm in the market for a replacement mower since my Crapsman LT2000 died. My neighbor who has a landscape business has a 2001 EXmark LaserZ hp for sale with 2K hours on the Kawasaki engine. It has a bagger system and 52" deck. It also comes with a 2003 EXmark with all the same options but with a blown motor.

What is the package worth?

It's not the hours, it's the maintenance!

Tell us about the property you will be maintaining.

But .. . .hours, depending on the size of equipment, play a role . . . just like in aircraft.

I'm selling the John Deere Tractor and large commercial ZTR mower at the farm. Everyone seems to want hours for the John Deere and could care less about the mower.

Commercial mower maintenance vs Airplane maintenance.

Apples vs. Oranges

Bad comparison Court.

I've commercial mowed. Commercial mowers don't buy John Deere mowers!

ExMark is an excellent commercial mower.

PM me Damnut. I'll steer you right.

So after talking with my neighbor I found out that it has been sitting for over a year. He told me a price and said get the cash to him whenever I had a chance, no rush. Dan just said to me "get it running and tell me what you think....... I just wanted it out if my yard". The clincher was he told me it came with free delivery............... had his kids push it to my house. LOL

So his kids pushed it to my house and carried all the extra parts over too. 2 ultra vacs with chutes, roll bar, pair of rear tires, oil and hydraulic filters, new PTO clutch in box and every replacement belt. The other mower is in his back yard and will need to be towed over, the parking brake is stuck.

I drained all the gas and oil and put some new stuff in. Didn't have the hydraulic oil but that'll get changed when I get all the stuff for a refresh. Installed the battery out of the EBR and prayed for the best. A few turns of the key and she fired right up. Drove it around the yard to get used to the controls for about 15 minutes till I got the hang of a zero turn. Slapped the ultra vac on it and went to cutting my 3/4 acre of grass.

HOLY AWESOMENESS BATMAN!!! I ripped through the yard in zero time and never had it cut so evenly or nicely. Probably cut 2/3 off the time it would have taken me with my old rider.

After I finished up the lawn I went inside to research what I figure I was buying. I looked up the serial number it turns out it is a 2005 model year. Started looking at the used market and seeing what the going rate is for this mower. So after everything is said and done I bought the mower because I think I got a great deal. I don't think Dan was the best at maintaining his machines but I think it's worth the chance at the price he gave me.

This morning I went out and there was hydraulic fluid that pissed out the top of the tank. It does look a little murky and I'm going to need to get it changed out asap.

I'll post pictures in a minute. What would this be worth? I think I got a great deal.

Hyd oil expands when hot. Oil on top of the tank could just mean it was overfilled. The good part is that it doesn’t look brown or creamy. Does whatever it has for a level indicator say anything about hot or cold?

>>>Bad comparison Court.

I agree.

All I know is I just sold our old John Deere 4310 and the large, nearly new, Ferris ZTR. Everyone who called about the Deere asked "how many hours?" . . . everyone who called about the Ferris asked "how much?"

That bagger alone is worth $1K. When new it cost about $2.5K

Make sure you level the deck, and even out the air to about 10lbs. in the back tires. Makes a big difference in the finished look.

Also, make sure you keep the blades sharp and 30 degree angle. Don't forget to balance them.

Regularly grease your spindles too! Your hydro pumps work hard. Treat them to an hydro fluid/filter change. I use 20w50 Amsoil for that. Napa should have the filter you need.

You may have to adjust your air gap on your electric clutch (PTO). Make sure you have a load tested battery as voltage at the PTO is sensitive.

Good deal. Congrats

As the seat is torn, you may want to invest in a replacement suspension seat (not new of course). Depends on whether your property is bumpy and how old you are/any back issues!

I wouldn't worry much about the oil. We all know that EXmarks the spot.

I got both mowers for a grand which I thought was a smoking deal. Not sure if I want to buy an engine for the second one and sell it or keep it as a parts mower.

The beer holder probably needs a new front isolator.

Hard to drink and mow with this one........ kinda need 2 hands. On top of that this machine does my lawn in no time. I'd rather sit with my beer and enjoy the work completed.

Steve, this thing says to use Mobil 15-50. Should I switch to the 20-50? I'm about to change it out anyways.

Good morning Jim:
I forgot to tell you that you should buy a can of Fluid Film. Aerosol can.

Spray that under your mower deck and let it sit overnight. Fluid Film helps keep wet grass from collecting in the deck.

You can find it at Ace Hardware stores or Home Depot.

Does Fluid Film only work on EX Mark mowers or can I use it on my lowly Cub Cadet?

I will assume it works for all mowers and will try to find some soon. Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe I'll try it on my little Craftsman push mower. I wonder where I could find it? Probably the Hardware Store. How expensive is it?

Jim, fixed it for ya, plus you could probably use this in WV. You're welcome.

Going to 20W-50 might change the ambient temperature range that the mower can operate in. You may have to change it back out before cutting your lawn in December.

Damn, a lot of people around here use Fluid Film as an undercoating on vehicles and equipment as an edge against that liquid salt solution they pre-treat the roads with. Never thought to use it on a mower deck, now I have to give it a try.

I think it sells for ~$7/can.

One can goes a long way.

NAPA auto parts has it, a little pricier. Of course they will sell you a 2.25 oz can for $8.19, but for $2 more you can get an 11.75 oz can. Somebody’s making money on that somewhere.
