Memorial Day. Take a moment to remember.

Sunny's great uncle John Swackhamer never made it home from France in 1918. He was KIA on 8 October. His remains are interred in France in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery along with more than 14,000 of his brothers-in-arms. He was killed in battle in the last month of the "War to End All Wars" in the battle of Meuse-Argonne in which the largely untrained American Army was thrown against the Germans in what saw the highest loss of life by the US Army in a single day in ANY action before or since.

The photo of him taken at the end of Basic hangs in our living room in its original frame each and every day.

There is a short history piece on the battle of Meuse-Argonne by The History Guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X10W7WOZbU

Very informative links. Well worth the few minutes of viewing. I will pause for John Swackhamer on Memorial Day.

If you can, take the picture out of the frame and get some good digital copies of it. May be well worth it in the long run.

Thanks for posting, Slaughter. Memorial Day isn't just all about the pool, boating, or BBQ'ing, nopers.
Remember and honor those who served.

My mother's father James Fields, fought in the battle of the Meuse Argonne. He passed in 1953, before I was born but I've heard how he was once in battle for three days straight which included a lot of hand to hand combat.

By all accounts he was a good and decent man. I wish I could have know him.
