Does anyone know if there are any rider training courses in the Central NY area that focus on large/heavy touring bikes? I feel I really should go through one of these with my Harley and I'm not seeing anything listed at the only place near me that offers courses. All they offer appear to be aimed a beginning riders with or without a learner permit, which I'm sure I would get some benefits from, but would like to focus on the challenges of the heavier machines.

Go to the track.

Seriously. You'll gat a TON of free advise from the experienced riders who work there and a TON of experience riding closer to the limit in the safest surroundings available.

No traffic, clean pavement, no cops, no cross streets, lots of run-off, and everyones going in the same direction.

Look into a ARC - Advanced Rider Course.

Or...get to know some police motormen, and see if you can join one of their training/rodeo days.

Or...watch some youtube police rodeo videos, buy a sleeve of red Solo beer cups, fill 'em with sand, and make your own course in a school parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. Scrape some floorboards, have some fun - the FLH chassis eats up the slow speed stuff!

Total Control is offering both level 1 and 2 ARC classes in Poughkeepsie. Of course the only scheduled classes seem to be May 5th. No idea if they might add more later. This is a riding course for any bike, they don’t discriminate.

"Ride Like A Pro"- a motor cop teaches you how to ride like one. I tried to track down the original site, for some reason (asshats) I ended up with some asinine "male enhancement" pill site...

Try this.

I've watched a bunch of videos, but another person watching you can pick up a lot of things that you as a rider may not catch.

The other side is just to spend a bunch of time practicing in a parking lot. I do need to buy some markers that I can put down into a course. I'll have to check with security where I work and see if they will care if I take over an empty lot for a couple hours at a time.

Greg- that's part of the deal with Ride Like a Pro. IIRC you can order the DVD set and they'll send you all the cones you need. I didn't dive too deep looking into the stuff earlier, but in my scan it looks like these folks are running instructor-led classes in several cities.

All I know is that watching the motor cops do their thing is fascinating, certainly very impressive. Every time I ride to SMHD I like to just noodle around on the painted MSF course they have laid out in their back lot.

The Groton Cycle Center used to have a heavyweight touring course, I sent them an email and of course they haven't gotten back to me. Only place I know of that's anything close to local. None of the local Harley dealers run these anymore either, when the Blasts were gone, they just stopped offering any type of riding instruction.
