... deliveries second. One of my trucks, sitting and waiting to unload at Georgia World Congress Center this morning. Minding his own MF'n business. When along comes this box truck driver, we'll call him Willy Nilly, and clips a utility pole, grabs the wire and drags it down on top of my truck.

Box trucks Having little driving experience, I'm amazed at who they will just toss a set of truck keys to (including me). Drove the big 26' Penske. No CDL. Just 18 years of age and two forms of ID. |

Try selling RV's for 7 years. NO CDL REQUIRED for a gasser. CDL-B is "required" for a diesel pusher because of air brakes...but there's no enforcement in place. Think about your average RV'er, combined with those tidbits... Give 'em a WIDE berth! |

They dropped air brake endorsements for CDL's years ago. Every cold snap we get, drivers call in and can't get their brakes to release because *guess what* they never drain their tanks. That's a daily item on the post-trip... Oh my God, don't get me started on compliance issues. |

I am scared of rental box truck. Then followed closely by RVers. But, #1 scary is 18 wheelers that won't move off the right side of the road for a stopped vehicle with flashing lights. I want to kick those guys straight in the nads. |

CDL-B is "required" for a diesel pusher because of air brakes...but there's no enforcement in place. Know all about that one. I had to get my CDL-A when I worked for Freightliner custom chassis, I was an R&D Engineer and had to drive them. A 40 foot pusher with a 12 liter cummins in it is a BEAST and they let any grandma and grandpa pull right out in to traffic with them like nothing. There is a KOA across from my office that at least once a week someone pulls out into the turning lane and doesn't realize the tail is blocking two lanes of traffic.

We lost countless brand-new travel trailers right outside our gates. Divided 4-lane, pull out, to go left, trailer hanging out into the northbound lanes while they wait to turn into the southbound...BLAM. Reese hitchwork is STRONG - more than once, we had trailers obliterated on their sides, and the back ends of the tow vehicles hanging - from the hitchwork - four feet in the air. Don't get me started on the rental nightmare - we started renting RVs while I worked there. Having worked at a Harley shop with rentals, I warned the boss...he ignored me. After the first eight out of eight rentals came back severely damaged by fuel pump hits - people can't get in and out of gas stations and would hit either the pumps, or nearly peel the roof off with the island's roof - he did what I said he should do all along, and not "offer" the insurance coverage...but REQUIRE it. |

Interesting, IL and MI still have air brake endorsements. The air brakes on our buses blow through the drier every time the tank tops off. I'm sure I've heard trucks do the same thing. I guess some must not though. At least we don't have to deal with the trailer set up. |

Until they discontinued the requirement, I had to have a Federal drivers license. Which led to a hilarious safety/"fishing" stop one day when I got stopped on my Cyclone, with everyone else. Naturally, I was directed to the nearby parking lot for further checks. The nice State patrolman were busy, and I had time to park, doff helmet & gloves & mesh armor jacket, light a fag, ( sorry, other preference smoking material ) and have my wallet in hand. The nice troopers got to me and circled my bike, looking for safety violations, then asked for my documents. Registration, insurance, Federal licence. Confusion! OH, sorry, handed over Class 3 licence ( separate from my regular one at the time ) more confusion. Oops, here's my class 5 & 7. Younger trooper was going to do a computer check.... Older one just laughed and told him, "he's got licences for vehicles from scooters to tanks, stuff you can't drive" I said, "oops,forgot", and handed him my glider license. " I passed the Master Mariner written, but I haven't had the practical, sorry ". " is there anything you can't drive? " "Well, sailboats with more than 2 masts, and buses. Never bothered with a chauffeur or Tall Ship rating. And semis. Those guys got skills ." much laughter, and agreement. |

They dropped the requirement for air brake endorsements for CDL's years ago Individuals can still ask for that test here, some employers require it. It's just not mandated by law. Our trucks all have air dryers, but they don't keep 100% of the moisture out. It collects in places like the leveling valves and inside the actual brake chambers, little by little until there is enough to freeze. Emptying the tanks daily prevents this. It's not hard, there's a long ass cord hanging down where it's easy to reach specifically for the purpose. I guess I just need to keep in mind that these are "professional drivers" who don't think it's a good idea to carry a pressure gauge in their gear. I find 10 out of 18 tires with 60-70 pounds in them on a regular basis. smh. |

IL and MI, it's still a requirement. I know the systems on buses have significant differences from truck systems. It's kind of strange in that you get tested on the equipment you will be driving, but it's the same endorsement. At that point you can go out and drive equipment you have never been trained on. Kind of strange IMO. Then again, the people who wrote the rules have probably never driven anything with air brakes. |
