If you haven't read 1984 then go read it then come back to the above link. Or at least see the movie.

I'm currently re reading the last book in David Weber's Honor Harrington series. Set over a thousand years in the future, the author had to make choices about language & systems.

He chose to use the Metric system. The odds are better that we'll still be using centimeters in a thousand years than we use Persian grain measurements today, but mostly because it would be distracting, and extra work, if he used made up names for space inches.

In language? With notable exceptions, men & women work side by side as equals in the enlightened societies of the late 29th century, and language reflects that. It's Naval combat fiction, space Navy, but still. Some nations call ships her, others he. That's no different than today. Generalized non sexual terms are masculine, as today, for those who speak English. Man means all men & women, etc. Symbol obsessed folk object to that, today, but their angry efforts to de-sex the language seem stilted and forced. The author just skipped the rapidly changing terminology, and stuck to American English.

But. When a man is speculating what another, unknown, person is doing, he uses, "him", and a woman uses, "her". Either will use the correct term if they discover the unknown ( ship captain, administrator, etc. ) is male or female, but the default is simply self referential. This is a unique to my knowledge way of establishing the assumption of equality without strain.

If only the symbol and victim obsessed would agree, that would free up enough bandwidth for miracles online. ; )

Real ID law...

I'll post this video, just because I happened upon it randomly. She has plenty of her "conspiratorial theories" going on that I'm not really concerned with. She does state the facts of what this law is though, in case you need a refresher, or hadn't heard about it at all.

This is real stuff going on. We just discussed it in required training for work on Friday. Pretty much, your drivers license will require the same documentation as a passport.

Seems like this is going to throw a huge wrench into the plans of sanctuary states/cities. It will be a federal requirement to show you are here legally. This means that illegals will be right back to driving illegally, with no insurance. Have they been asleep at the wheel on this, or are they planning on defiance of the new federal law? Or can they issue a drivers license that is not Real ID compliant? Friday, we were lead to believe there would be no choice, but it was also a discussion about CDL holders in MI. Our discussion was only to inform us about what we needed to know to comply, and not about any of the political ramifications.

Anyone know what this will mean for a state like CA? Thoughts?

While I understand the "big brother" concerns...I just don't see things going that way.

A) - the Gov isn't that ORGANIZED.

B) - the Gov isn't FUNDED for 'checkpoints' and all that.

C) - in all honesty...our photo is ALREADY in a national database. Seriously. States share that stuff. Facial rec? See B) above - the funding isn't in place to have facial scanners at airports, federal buildings, etc. It might come...but I don't expect to see it anytime soon.

I can see it *maybe* throwing a wrench into the sanctuary stuff...but you note in the video where it distinctly says Real ID is NOT required in order to vote.

Again, I'll say it - Real ID is NOT required in order to vote.

So, the Dems can still pack their ballot boxes as needed, with votes from Illegals - who simply won't be able to fly, or enter federal buildings.

Where's the change there for an illegal?

You only "have" to comply...if you want to fly anywhere, or enter a Fed building. Otherwise, you can keep your old, analog, state drivers license. Whether they enact penalties in '20...we shall see.

It's a pipe dream, but it would be nice if it also included/enabled 50-state reciprocity for wear and carry...

https://www.the-american-interest.com/2019/01/21/t he-problem-with-no-name/

I'm relatively ignorant of the parties and players in France. American media is too, and I have reason not to trust their analysis, which, so far, is "yellow vest protests again in Paris, here's video of fires and water cannons, might be from last week, no one cares F$%& Trump!".

But I have noticed that tear gas in Paris happens every year at college exam time. I know that water cannons and leftist thugs throwing fireworks and rocks at police is the Normal Paris.

And I find it interesting that there is zero reported violence in the Islamist Ghetto recently. I have no idea if there is the Normal violence there, since French Media is cowardly about it, but if the ghetto is quiet while they watch the riots, that's a scary data point. Is the ghetto pro-Macron?

I don't know. I have respect for French soldiers, but none for their leaders, and don't know where today's protesters fall on the spoiled brat scale of French Street Revolutionaries.

I do know what happens to authoritarian French leaders. The lucky ones go into exile.

So CA will continue to produce these second class residents with diminished status. Let's just say that's an "interesting" thing for them to do.

I'm confused. A federal license isn't a real ID but a REAL Kalifornica license is? How does that work? And what if I decide to fly to, say, LAX from Cincinnati; is it still possible to catch a plane home with my Ohio license? WTF??!?

There is no "federal" drivers license. It's just that states are being required to conform to certain federal standards in issuing their state licenses. This will allow them to be used for things like crossing the US border, flying within the US, entering federal building, etc. It appears that CA is going to offer a non-compliant license for their second class residents, that will not allow for these uses. It seems to be to be a form of cognitive dissonance on a governmental level.

There was a Federal drivers license. I've got one somewhere, but they quit issuing them more a dozen years ago, at the USPS. Mine was a Class 3 equivalent, and I took the written tests for the extra ratings since I had a motorcycle and "everything except semi tractor" State license at the time. "In the absence of qualified examiner, the written & a State license shall" clause applied. So theoretically with no expiration, I can drive fork lifts and half tracks on city streets. ( also main battle tanks and bomber tow vehicles )

The one time I had to interact with LEO at an accident, (my vehicle was legally parked, unoccupied, with hazard flashers on, when the poor kid rammed it because he hadn't cleared his windshield) and I handed them my Federal license, it freaked the policeman. Apparently it triggered a whole menu on the police car computer he'd never seen before. He called me over and started asking about hazmat & munitions. There was a "transporting human organs for transplant" box that required him to IMMEDIATELY stop & give me a ride if necessary.

"No human hearts, today, officer, relax."

Yes, I've transported a human heart. With police escort. They loosened the rules on that the next year. Also entire bee colonies ( No special treatment. : ) ) and horse, bull, & Bison sperm. Livestock, avian, reptilian, mammalian & insectoid.

Special Delivery was real, once upon a time.

I'm too young to have delivered children. Yes, that was a service. No I don't know how many stamps.

I saw a stupid and really hilarious movie once. I can't remember the name but one of the funniest parts is where a guy is delivering a human heart and it somehow fell off the truck and a dog ran off with it. At least I thought that was funny.

I think the AB60 licenses was a practical solution for illegals to drive their kids to school and the insurance lobby wanted to sell them insurance. While the California Department of Motor Vehicles initially discouraged illegals with criminal convictions from getting an AB60 license, "because we will share your info with the Feds," well, maybe they are sharing all that info with them now.

Oh, fudge!

There used to be All sorts of weird regulations on transporting organs for transport. That's why I drove 55 miles to a hospital where a young motorcycle accident victim was being treated to do the pick up, and was escorted by State Police with lights & siren. The police were not allowed to transport, that needed a bonded courier and the 65 miles back, directly to the hospital, and the surgeon had a sterilized pen to sign for the heart.

Shortly after that the rules changed and private companies, usually non profits, took over transportation. Afaik, NY police still aren't allowed to carry organs, a case where the Feds actually got smart faster than a State.

The Post Office still delivers Hearts & Livers, as needed, where the private guys don't have resources nearby.

Looks like the airline messed up, but corrected their boo boo.... Unfortunately at the expense of the passengers being delayed & rescheduled. The airline should have done refunds and prioritize the affected folk's travel. How they handled that wasn't in the story.

It's a weirder world than most people know.

On a unrelated note, there is a group of WW1 fighter plane replica builders & flyers near Kansas City, that do air shows and practice flying Neiuports, Fokkers, etc. "The Dawn Patrol".

When The President visited the area some years back, the Secret Service sent an agent to politely inform them they were grounded from x to y times for security reasons.

Their version of the story is funny. They spent the day doing maintenance, and took off the minute allowed.

Considering that a Fokker Triplane has a top speed around 115 mph ( per Wikipedia ) No one seriously considered them a threat, but SOP!

Funnier still, I've had the same thing, but without the SS visit, when NOTAMS grounded everything in an Air Force One visit, but my glider had no engine and a Vne of 45.

Yes, we followed the order. Getting buzzed by a F-16 can ruin your day.

Politics is perception. A lot of people got bigger paychecks because of the tax reform, but now their refund may be smaller. Rational, informed, folk are fine with that. They got to spend their money. Folk who think the refund is a bonus & not a zero interest loan to Uncle Sam, finally paid back, may be unhappy.

Depending upon their income. The poorer folk do well this year vs. Upper income. But the perception?

Neatest package delivery when I was younger. I drove for a company called Indy Dash. They started as a movie film delivery service and worked hand in hand with Pilot Airfreight. So, after a day on my normal route, I get back to the terminal and get asked if I want to run a special. $3.00 a mile from Indianapolis airport to a hospital in Fort Wayne with a 3 pound package. I hauled the heart valves on the rear of my motorcycle on a warm dry summer evening. Nice ride.

May have worked . . . until you put it on the internet.

:-)

I am amazed at these new Apple iPhones . . . and the facial recognition. They learn . . every single day they learn . . . every time they fail to recognize you and you link your "new look" by entering your password and being "somewhat recognizable" (it's not your wife) it gets updated. pretty amazing.

I am not unaware that the data sells for a pretty penny.

I am enrolled in CLEAR ME . . . and it's kind off the same thing for entry to stadiums and some airports.

We are truly living in amazing times . . as if all your personal information wasn't enough . . . we're also wearing iWatches so our personal database can be updated with where we go, how fast we drive, how often and how vigorously we exercise, our BP and heart rate.

I'm pretty sure . . . as a student of mathematics . . that Apple . . or one of their data customers . . . could tell me, within 12 months . . when I am going to die.

Amazing times
