I just started the paperwork to turn in the oldest machine in the shop. A 1948 Rockwell drill press acquired from the Air Force in 1951. It's still in A1 condition. Reorganization to make room for the incoming Datron CNC 3+1 machine put the Bridgeport model J four feet from my bench. It will probably do most of the drilling now. Nostalgia is a weak reason to justify tying up space in a government shop. Now the senior machine Is a Colchester lathe from 1953. | ||

I got what I consider a donation yesterday to the radio control pile. A Pronto M-51 electric wheelchair was put on Facebook as broken. I contacted guy and he got back to me a week later when he got back from a cruise. No matter what breaks on one there will be salvageable systems. He said he had it sold and when he was going to deliver it. It would not start. I do not look at a wheelchair when picking it up unless they ask me to. I then tell them I charge to fix them. There are things that happen that are easy fixes. This one has cooked batteries. A set of batteries are $125. I have a pair for camping to run my CPAP off of. I ran the trash to the curb with Robby#1. Then pulled the batteries and fired up Robby#2. Robby#2 has a new charger that I'll use with my batteries. I will not let it cook my batteries. I figure he plugged it in and left it for a month. I put 100ml + distilled water in every cell. They are at 1/2 voltage. Probably not going to recover. If I collect enough of these, I will have to build an electric bicycle. I am wanting to learn about brushless motors and using electromagnets in place of solid magnets in motors this year. I will probably hand wind something before I'm done. The other day I was playing with a 2x60 speed controller, 2 motors and a 24v power supply. I don't understand what I did yet, but I wound up with voltage readings over 100 volts off the motor feed. I got some learning to do. | ||

This morning I cooked lemon bars in a skillet. The pork butt is slow cooking on the stove for BBQ. I've made a mess with seasoning on top of the stove.  | ||

Tracey leaves town with her sister, mom, and aunts to visit other aunts from time to time. Last time I left town someone bought a car. My hobby when she is gone is cheaper. I watch Craigslist and Facebook market place free stuff and broken stuff all the time. There are some items if I keep a close eye on, I can turn a profit. Then there are things I know will turn into money pits. I try to balance them out to stay in appliances, lawn mowers, and toys. Last night was a major score on a washer and dryer. Rental property landlord getting ready for new tenants said come get this washer and dryer. I don't know if they work. They were left behind. I just hoped to pick-up a quieter dryer than what I have. I grabbed them and ran home with them. Got them home and started to realize what I got. An Electrolux perfect steam dryer, and a Bosch Nexxt 300 series washer. I priced a new door seal for the washer at $50 to $60. It works with the smallest of drips coming from it now. I just did a load of my clothes and that is the freshest they have been in a long time. I think I'm going to purchase the door seal and install it. Now I have to get the house put back together before she gets home tomorrow. And hide the old washer and dryer. Haha, she will have to learn how to do laundry all over. These are fancy.  | ||

When we bought the current house there were a few things we knew would need to be addressed. One of them was the ancient water heater. I tried to get a feel for it. Never could figure out how much life could be left in it. So, now a year later Tracey told me the hot water failed her. I went and took a long shower and bath without being able to replicate the cold water or even diminished hot water. I have decided to just replace the heater. Having it actually fail at Christmas after being told just would not cut it. So, I measured it and found a replacement 3.5" shorter that has more capacity than we need when we have guests. $330 out the door at Lowes. It's a Christmas miracle! I put it in easy as pie and took a hot shower about 40 minutes later. Thank you Lowes for the 10% vet. discount and 6 months same as cash. I just couldn't think of a reason not to. In our discussion the idea of on demand came up. I asked her if she would be OK with being in the shower at the same time as a power outage. An actual tank of hot water sounded better. | ||

NICE washer Ourdee! I'm more familiar with the Bosch dryer as that's what facilitated my move to NC. A shame that the Korean competition finally dealt the death knell for US sized Bosch laundry. Oh, BTW, I can get KILLER deals on Bosch parts... | ||

Brankin, You know you only missed my ordering the part by a few hours. Well, the ADV board is pestering people to introduce themselves by writing us that hardly ever post over there an Email calling us nOObs. This is what I posted with the lightest of digs for calling me a nOOb, (dip wits). Here it's: Been riding since 74. Started on Benellis, 65cc then a 125 Panther. Had a couple Yammies RD250 and RD350. Three Honda XL250s and an XL500. A 550 four then Kaw 750 LTD. A couple of TW200s. Then a couple of Buells, a XB12XT and a XB12Scg nick named Lil Red. There are some others like the 66 Honda 160 etc. Don't do to bad for an oldster. Put 42,000 mi. on the XT and I have near 30,000 mi. on the Scg. I'll ride 5 or 600 in a day to go camping on what is basically a crotch rocket. I plan on trailering some this next year so I feel more like riding the twisties after I get there. With the trailer I'll be able to carry enough batteries to run my CPAP while camping. Like going to WI., TN., GA., and NC. I'll catch the Springfield mile in IL. in 2019. The Dragon was fun at night with a local leading and it is checked off the bucket list. I road it with hard luggage and near 100 pounds of gear. Lil Red never skipped a beat. But, there are roads down there that are a lot more fun than it. I've been over on the BadWeather forum for near 10 years now. They let you talk politics without crying ouch like the TW forum I haven't been to in over a year. These halls have a reputation too. Probably why you called me a nOOb. That is just another opinion, and all of us put them on a saddle sooner or later. Gotta go. Too many miles callin'.  | ||

The Bosch washer door seal came in today. I installed it without removing the front of the washer. I could see a cool cheater tool that I'd make for the front spring if I did these for a living. Basically a large set of circlip pliers that would lock in the expanded position. | ||

One of my favorite things Tracey and I do this time of year is making cookies and candy together. I think we have made enough for everyone that doesn't need it today.  Last batch waiting to go in. | ||

I tested the battery on Lil Red tonight. 155 CCA and internal resistance is over 18 milliohms. Bad battery. I am not going Harley again. The connection in the lead is cheap looking compared to the first batteries I got from there. I believe this battery was old when I bought it last year. It never delivered a good hit on the starter. I just ordered a Deka ETX14 220 CCA. $69.55 shipped from High-Tech Battery Solutions, Inc. | ||

The new battery sat in the post office in Ohio for a week. it started to move the other day and arrived on my porch today. I'm not sure I'm done complaining about the shipping. New battery has a 1/19 sticker on it. Looks to still be 2018 here. Raises questions about the old battery that had a year old sticker on it when I bought it. The new one tests high on CCA but just over 6 milliohms internal resistance. I was hoping for 5. The terminals have 2 threaded connection holes in each. My main complaint of XBs have been the compression of the engines versus the CCA battery size installed. A few more amps would have made me happier all along. I have been thinking of installing a second battery under the breather cover for a while to be used only while starting and till it is recharged right after. My thought has been a pair of 6V4Ah wired in series for 12 volts then connected in parallel with the ETX14 main battery. Prior to picking up the pair of 6V4Ah batteries, I was contemplating mounting my 1000 amp jump box under the breather box for cranking duty only. The perceived drawback being it could be rough on the glass mat main battery. I feel safer with the pair of small 6 volt glass mats.  Here are the little ones:  | ||

I am confounded today. A friend had his company truck (F650 rollback wrecker) stolen last week. From what I've been told, it was being used to steal cars right after being stolen. He pulled up to an intersection a couple of mornings ago and his stolen truck stopped at the stop sign to the left of him. He has been arrested for the "murder" of the person driving the truck. Another friend was with him. He told me it was over in an instant. The person driving the stolen truck wasn't out of jail a day before the truck was stolen. The driver had a history of trouble with the law. It looks like if my friend is acquitted, he will still lose his business and probably everything he owns. That's the best case scenario. He is still in jail tonight and has not been formally charged yet. | ||

Deca manufactures bateries for Harley so apples for apples I hope you got a good deal on the battery, I have had good luck with interstate but buy and flip blasts when i can and am putting together some to take on track days so a new one in my bike every spring and the old down the road. Sorry to hear about your friend even a "good" shooting here in Washington state costs a home owner in self defense in their own home an average of 60k according to the required class for concealed carry here. i hope its better there good luck. | ||

Calling 911 and following at a distance could have saved him a lot of trouble. Presuming you are talking Indiana, Here are the statutes your friend's lawyer will be arguing. (among others) IC 35-41-3-3 Use of force relating to arrest or escape Sec. 3. (a) A person other than a law enforcement officer is justified in using reasonable force against another person to effect an arrest or prevent the other person's escape if: (1) a felony has been committed; and (2) there is probable cause to believe the other person committed that felony. However, such a person is not justified in using deadly force unless that force is justified under section 2 of this chapter. IC 35-41-3-2 Use of force to protect person or property (edit) (d) A person: (1) is justified in using reasonable force, including deadly force, against any other person; and (2) does not have a duty to retreat; if the person reasonably believes that the force is necessary to prevent or terminate the other person's unlawful entry of or attack on the person's dwelling, curtilage, or occupied motor vehicle. You're right that his life has forever changed, and even if he "wins", the cost is way more than the truck was worth. | ||

I looked at pictures of the scene of the intersection and can see that the circumstances presented themselves at near the speed of an accident at an intersection. I do not want to second guess the prosecutor in this and I can only view still photos of the aftermath. From witnesses I have 2 stories that seam to conflict, but could be a split second different in viewing time. One said he put his hands up. The other said he reached for something on the dash. There is supposed to be a court thing of some kind today. | ||

I will go on to say that the battery I bought with Deka branding has much better terminal connections than the HD branded battery bought prior. It also has a good low milliohm reading indicating it's health. I think the HD battery was already a year old when I bought it at near twice the price of this Deka. I will hazard a guess that when you contract with Deka for a battery to brand as your own that they allow you leeway in dictating design parameters to save money on a product that just meets the customer's goals. | ||

When I was a "parts guy" at the local stealership I paid very close attention to batteries. Ten years ago, the HD batteries were above the competition. 12AH batteries lasted 3-5 years 18AH batteries lasted 5-7 years 24AH batteries lasted 8-10 years. Both my Buell original batteries(12AH) lasted 9 years. Replaced the 09 Uly's battery last year, Loretta is down but will get a new battery this year when I get her back on the road. From your input, RD, I'll get a Deka. Z | ||

I'll try to remember to write my impressions of this Deka after installation. The last HD battery soured me. This Deka tested at over the 220 CCA by 25 Amps. I will test it again before install and after a ride with it in. | ||

Rasa fraza! The window regulator on my Dodge Caravan bit the big one. (2013, driver's door ) 45 miles from home. In 12 degree F weather. Jammed halfway down. Or lower. Cable off track etc. Good news is I was going to a buddy who's an ace mechanic with an armor shop. Bloodbath and Beyond. ( I'll have to post pics ) So we cut a scrap piece of plexiglass and duct taped the glass as high as we could pull it, ( halfway) filled the gap with plastic & duct tape, and I was able to drive home warm. Hopefully the local garage can fix it tomorrow, part is on order. A quick check of YouTube videos shows this is a common problem, and the timing is pure Murphy's law. You never have a window jam in warm, dry weather. ( because cold makes that parts work harder ) | ||

Unless it is an 06 Liberty. I had all 4 regulators in the Liberty's windows fail twice each. Cold, hot, rain, snow, etc. I kept tools and large zip ties in it all the time. I replaced the front ones with the wrong regulators and some creative welding. They didn't break again. When the brackets on it broke the windows would fall all the way down. | ||
