Agonizing over new rims for my car... I've got a short list, and it's pretty much gotten down to these two options:

Option 1

Option 2

Bear in mind, those images only show the rim under the car, but do not show the true ride height after installation of the rims and the new adjustable coil-overs I'm putting in.

Ride height will be exactly like this:

What say you?

Option 2, without a doubt. I guarantee my opinion up to double the amount you paid for it!

I lean towards 5 spoke wheels, but more like the Torq Thrust wheels of yore.

Meh- "murdered out" black is kinda old to me, I still like shiny things. Actually I really like Teep's wheels. The old Enkis for VW's were cool, as were Cragars.

Try a photoshop of the silver wheels, with a gloss black striped rim, then reverse- black spokes with shiny rims. I once had a '78 280Z, white, with black spoke center wheels, chrome rims... my favorite car EVAAAR. Once I hit the lottery I'll find another.
Or, track down a Pebble Beach edition Lexus LS430...

I vote for option 1. They just stand out better. Only down side would be keeping them clean. Would show the road phlegm more.

I'd choose based on likelihood of curb rash. If they stick out? Bad. I can't tell in those pics.

I like the five spoke look, and the black, easy to clean & stealth look. Hmm.

Going simply on disc brakes look. #2.
I like both so it's a close call.

what do you currently have on it?
Would getting them powder coated be an option?

Powder coating the stock wheels is what I wish I would have done to the wife's Miata.

I've already coated the wheels I have on there, but the problem with them is the staggered size... impossible to get matching tires and cannot be rotated.

Pain. In. The. Ass.

I'm going from 15" front/16" rear to 17" all around. 1.75 inch drop with new coil overs and anti sway bar for the front.

New exhaust, cold air intake and a new cloth soft top to replace the 14 year old vinyl which has done an impressive job of surviving the last few winters.

Also of note:

Option #1 are actually black... the color is called "Hyper Black" and the picture is kind of deceptive. The studio lights shining off it are what make them look as silver as they do... the guys at Tire Rack tell me they look a lot blacker in person.

The AR wheels are not an option, they are 5-lug only.

Besides, it's a 2005 Spyder, not a '67 Bonneville.

I'd choose based on likelihood of curb rash.

Psh... never happen. Neither of the rims stick out past the tire anyway.

As a reminder, both options are black.

The first option has the polished lip, and the paint has kind of a pearlescent sheen to it.

Well in that case, I choose the first set. You don't need snowflake rims or you could buy a new Jeep Renegade.

Those are very similar to option #1, different color... and 5 lugs.

The 4 lug factor is my main limitation when it comes to choices

I'm tending to agree... they will look a lot like what the red car shown above has...

Although those are Centerlines and I'm not trying to spend that much money.

I like wheels to sparkle when they move.

I proved to my son that $20 black plain used wheels look the same as $1200 black wheels at 40 feet away.

But then.....it takes a brighter light to be seen after 60 years.

Have to say, the only black wheels I like are steelies - old cop cars, work trucks, with polished centercaps, or chrome lugs. Alloys should shine. On a silver car, I'd go either silver, or white.

Hmmm.... these wheels are bit too busy for my tastes, and the white really just doesn't please my eye.

I don't hate the silver version of these, but again it's too many spokes for me.

I definitely get what you're saying about wheels being shiny, though.

I have flat black wheels now, and to me it is an improvement over the original silver wheels, but I'm really leaning towards option #1 being the best of both worlds.

They're black, but they're not black... shiny silvery black... or something. Having not seen them in person, and taking what the guys at Tire Rack tell me on the phone at face value... but they guarantee 100% sastisfaction.

Go for it.

I like rims that showcase the disc brakes, even if plain, and don't stand out on their own. But not ugly! I want them to look good too.

Otoh, you can consider them jewelry to accent your look. Taste is taste.

I saw a video of a set of spinner hubcaps that was weighted to not move, like the 1969 Roadrunner cardboard cartoon "caps", with a bearing that fastened to the rim, and a cartoon of a running Roadrunner that stayed upright as you drove. Rare as heck now, since the cardboard didn't tolerate wet. A promo thing, rare even then.

But an Escalade, with these illusion caps looked like it was sliding down the street & around corners..... Trippy!

That's it!

It may be a generational thing. I like sleepers. A plain looking car with more power and better handling than stock. Something no one looks at twice. Big block Darts that eat Camaros for lunch. That kind of thing.

I get the fun of a tricked out car, but I prefer rolling past the police without notice and having a better car than the one with neon under the hood.

A version of Need For Speed rewarded customization with appeal points, so it made sense to spend game dollars on roof spoilers, multispectral paint jobs and decals with shark teeth. The next version offered the same gee gaws but gave no points for style, just performance. So I put every buck into tires and brakes and turbos etc. I was literally one race away from winning the game with a VW when my hard drive crashed, and I lost the game.

So that's my basic take on customization. Millions for performance but not one cent for flash.

OTOH, rims are performance. ; )

Holy crap dude, you must think I'm Daddy Warbucks or something...

I would LOVE some true wire wheels. They're like 1200 EACH... if I could find them in the right size... which I can't.

I've already got the hat and driving gloves to go with those wheels but they were around $80 together, so I'll just have to daydream about those wheels while I'm driving around the countryside in Wales.
